I’m trying to decide on my next set of trucks coming off Venture Lows - currently between Thunder IKPs or Ace AF1 Hollow IKPs. I skate mostly ledges, curbs, rails and flat.
Are you going with the same width, I am guessing 8 or under? Or going to change it up and get something wider?
Thunder 147s even with inverted kingpin have so minimal clearance, but they do work better than the regular kingpin versions. Just make sure it is the solid kingpin, not the hollow kingpin versions.
I still haven't seen or heard anything else about the Ace inverted kingpin, so I am guessing that no one has had issues with them, so that might be a good option if you want to spend a bit more money.
Almost the opposite ends of the truck scale, going from Venture low to Ace trucks though, but could be interesting!
Cheers - I know it’s a hectic range but I go in between 7.75-8.25. I’ve been a Thunder guy for the last ~decade with a the occasional pivot to Indy in there. I tried the Ace Classic 44s once before 8.25 trucks became a thing and the idea of 8.5 trucks felt like overkill (~2015). I enjoyed the Aces but sometimes I felt like the trucks were controlling me rather than the other way around
I haven’t heard of any loosening issues in either the Ace or Thunder threads so I’m assuming I’m good to go with whatever I choose.. I do so many feebles and smiths that I feel like I almost have to try an IKP
Thunder 148 (8.25) are a good truck which also work on 8 and 8.1 size boards that I have had them on - just more or less washers inside depending on board width, usually with narrow wheels on the smaller boards to match. They are 52 mm tall.
Thunder 147 would still work but the hangers are lower, so less clearance too. They come in at only 50 mm tall.
Ace have pretty much all options covered, from inverted kingpin baseplates with whatever hanger option you could add to it, as per their online store, or just get a normal set of inverted trucks from a regular shop - they have them in 8, 8.25 and 8.5 options.
I guess it is just down to whatever you might prefer then, or what is more easily available. Ace are more expensive, but people who buy them are often not so concerned with price and more concerned with how they perform.
