As I've gotten older I can feel myself aging out of the super sugary cocktails. I was also a bartender for many years so seeing how much sugar goes into a cocktail can kinda turn you off to them.
I do however love a properly made rum runner, which is a south Florida staple. My ex girlfriend from Colorado came and visited me years ago and we went out to a barrier Island to spend the day. She had never heard of a rum runner before, but ended up loving them.
Light rum, dark rum, OJ, pineapple juice, banana liqueur, blackberry liqueur, grenadine, a couple slices of orange and cherries and it's fucking DELICIOUS. The trick is to balance the two liqueurs as best as possible. Those liqueurs can make them extremely sweet. If you make it the right way it tastes like candy. 2 of them will get you smashed.
My favorite drink to make and turn people on to as a bartender was the blue motorcycle. It's basically a long island except you use blue curacao and sprite instead of triple sec and coke.
