I watched a nice screener copy 'Uncut Gems' yesterday. Pretty good, definitely recommend a watch. Just shows that when Adam Sandler has good dramatic material and a good director he can actually act pretty well. He has done it in the past, but not very often. Pretty crazy how the dude can do some shit like jack n jill, then also do something worth while like uncut gems, or punch drunk love.

He wasn't noticeably bad in The Meyerowitz Stories, either. Can't remember much about the movie itself. Anticipating Uncut Gems a lot but want to wait if they'll manage to play it in the cinemas.

Knives Out was...Okay?

Was keen to see Uncut Gems at the cinema too but just saw its coming to Oz Netflix in Jan so probably not likely, which is kinda a bummer. Might just watch a torrent over the holidays now.

Watched "Parasite" on Friday, read a couple reviews and knew it got some festival hype and I've seen snowpiercer and Okja so I was a fan of his other stuff but went into it not knowing much about the plot. Highly recommend Parasite. It's in Korean with English subtitties but it's the best movie I've seen in years.

Sweet, going to catch up on this over the holiday weekend.

Watched One Cut of the Dead while on a business trip. It's a Japanese zombie movie that subverts expectations in the best possible way. Love zombie movies and while it starts slow the ending was really satisfying.

Finally caught up with The Big Lebowski on a flight and it was good, I can understand how it developed a cult following.

The Irishman was great
[close]

Agreed. One of the only longer than usual films I didn’t look at the clock or feel bored... sans godfather (not part 3- that shit was garbage).
[close]

I thought it was decent but this tweet is pretty funny.

that tweet was pretty funny, and somewhat spot on (although I wouldn't put Taxi Driver in that group).

i thought the Irishman was ok at best.  it's essentially Goodfellas part 3, (Casino being part 2), and it was enjoyable but absolutely nothing made it stand out from his other mob films (or any other mob film).  same characters, same style... people I know consider it a masterpiece of modern cinema and I can't quite figure out why...  the length?  I feel like if you make a 3+hour movie people automatically assume it's a work of genius.

I agree. I thought it was good but I feel like a lot of people I know personally that called it a masterpiece are only saying that because Scorcese’s name was attached to it ...plus a few familiar faces from his previous films.

Those people that you speak of that think any 3+ hour long movie is a masterpiece obviously haven’t seen Cloud Atlas. That movie is a hot steaming pile of dog shit.

Re-watched Donnie Brasco after previously seeing it when I was like 15, and it's a really good movie. Johnny Depp does such a great performance in a more subtle role than I'm used to seeing from him. Probably the only time I've really enjoyed him as an actor.

Love Mafia movies in general, but this paints a much more realistic picture of that world with not taking a glamorizing approach like godfather, goodfllas, etc.

Knives Out was fun, pretty good

This shot of some waxed ledges pops up in it just when Daniel Craig's character says the words "unkinked"

His southern accent was trash though

Solid film, but i actually like Al Pachino’s character/acting slightly better... good concept to showcase the more lower level guys though

Catching 1917 tomorrow afternoon. Supposed to be a ridiculous blizzard going down so it's a good way to spend time inside.

Knives Out was a fun movie, also just saw Joker...the acting, set design & cinematography were all great but I thought the script was a bit weak.

The Sisters Brothers - a really great Western with John C Reily and Joaquin Pheonix.  starts of kind of a typical killers-for-hire story about 2 brothers as they pursue someone down the West Coast, but turns into something else and actually ends.. heartwarming?  Glad I came across it.

The Dark Valley - another pretty cool Western, but this one is a straight spaghetti western throwback right down to the overdubbed voices.  It's an Austrian movie I believe, that takes place in the Swiss Alps, but is a straight bloody revenge movie that reminds me of The Great Silence.  However, once major complaint, and I cannot stress this enough.... STOP USING MODERN MUSIC IN PERIOD PIECE MOVIES!!!  Using synth pop during a gunbattle in the 1860's doesn't exactly fit the vibe, and I would've loved this movie if it weren't for that.  FUCK.

Joker - had to see it... I really liked it.  Was worried it was gonna fall victim to over-hype and I was already tired of seeing the shit all over the place, so I was prepared to be unimpressed but it was definitely good.  The violence was really well done, obviously great acting, and I would actually watch a Batman movie if it took it to this level of darkness and bloodiness.

Really want to see Parasite too.

Parasite was amazing. I saw it last month and it was way better than SnowPiercer (which was pretty good).

I saw this a few weeks ago! The concept is so wild and definitely felt the Argento vibes when I watched it. Soundtrack and coloring add a weird feeling to it. I'd watch it again.

Colors Out of Space was something. Father Cagemister inexplicably slipping into his father’s possession and bizarre accent was disturbingly hilarious.

The Farewell and Portrait of a lady on fire were both excellent. Noémie Merlant had mesmerising eyes.

Jojo Rabbit was better than I expected. Another great performance from Scarlett Johansson (and Sam Rockwell).

Re-watched The Krays (1990) last night for the first time in maybe 20 years.
Forgot how good it is in places and how bad some of the acting is in others.

I preordered In Search of Darkness and Idigogo about 80's horror slasher it's a great documentary however the package and actual disk is a burnt Bluray disk I paid $ 59.99 for what was a bootleg copy. Once again great documentary terrible physical copy I'd have taken a digital copy if I'd have known.

I heard some people talking about it, but didn't fully understand. Was it shot to make it look like it was one continual take?

Is that about the Kray brothers who were gangsters in England? Super random timing because I just watched Legend with Tom Hardy who plays both brothers. I had no idea that movie existed and just saw it was streaming on Netflix. I really liked it too, mainly for Hardy's incredible acting.

Yeah pretty much, besides a part in the middle where the main character gets knocked out and the screen goes black for a bit.

The Paul Schrader collection the Criterion site recently put up kicks ass, Hardcore and Auto Focus are so good.
