nah that makes sense, that's a cool quote I haven't heard that one. I feel like I'm the same way, although I've been making a conscious effort (within the past year and a half maybe) to try to work on a cohesive series/body of work that is unified by a certain theme or idea. I feel like I can convey a lot simply through the title of the series. I sort of like this approach because it sets the stage but also lets the viewer come around to their own thoughts about the work, which are often more interesting/not exactly the same as my own thoughts.

do you guys put any thought into creating a "series" or anything like that?

also i'm curious to see what photographers you guys are into.

huge fan of these guys
http://alecsoth.com/photography/
http://www.martinkollar.com/nothing-special
http://www.davistim.com/images.php

I've really been wanting to do a series with a theme and have been working on it a bit. I'll report back when I've made anything worth posting.

As for photographers I'm into, I work at the San Diego Museum of Art and we recently did a huge exhibition of Arnold Newman and it was amazing. Portrait photography isn't something that I usually gravitate towards, but his work was super powerful. He worked for some pretty huge publications over his life and photographed tons of famous people/politicians/people with influence. The way he could capture peoples personality through how he chose to take the picture and the setting was amazing. I'd highly recommend checking out his stuff. Some of my favorite shots are here on this page: http://arnoldnewman.com/content/portraits-0

My favorites from those are the Igor Stravinsky, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Marilyn Monroe, and Tuman Capote. He also had some pretty cool views on photography and breaking some of the traditional rules.

I just got my budget flash gear in yesterday. SF weather has been shit so I just messed around doing some test shots indoors. I got 2 Youngnuo YN560-III but one came broken or won't seem to fire even though there is a signal and it creates the sound that it went off. I even put it on the hotshoe and it fires but no flash. Anyone know of a solution why that could be? Or is it broken?

Fongstarr, is it a digital sound going off or the actual sound of what the flash tube would make? I don't know too much about flashes, especially the hardware inside, but maybe the actual bulb (wire?) connection is bad.

For anyone into street photography, there's a pretty good documentary on photographers like Bruce Gilden, Jill Freedman, Boogie, and others. It's a pretty good watch, at least worth the $5 rental. For me, stuff like this is a good resource to pysch myself up if I'm going out to shoot street. http://everybodystreet.com/

Yeah....the flash tube is going off as it would if it did fire but just no actual flash. I took it to a local shop and they honestly knew shit but it seems it wasn't cause of the mode I had it on. I already returned it and am getting another one tomorrow. I know these things break down but I just didn't think so fast. Hopefully i can make them work for what I want.

What the heck......how did you get the stars in the background? Two photos in one or flash shot and then let the camera sit after?

those are all single exposures, they were all around 30 seconds. You just pop the flash and have the person stay relatively still so they don't ghost. I'm trying to upgrade to a body soon that I can actually shoot at high iso's with and the stars will look way better.

Really digging this one. Had some of my photos in an art show for the first time over the weekend. People seemed to like my prints. I'm pretty stoked on that.

I shoot with a Yashica Mat 124G and both of those shots are on Kodak Ektar 100, which is pretty much my usual setup for medium format.
