James,
Every year, I am forced to evaluate BONES WHEEL’S past year's successes and failures to create a plan for the coming year. I am looking at 2008 to be a year of evolution and growth, which means instituting some changes, which may be a difficult transition for some. I feel that such transformation is necessary if BONES will survive in this highly competitive, rapidly changing market. Because of a few team additions to the BONES program... and a few losses... it has forced me to reevaluate the brand as a whole.
As you well know I recently hired Jared Lucas to create unity for BONES WHEELS, to assist me in taking control of the brand and take the team to the next level of quality and success. We feel BONES is in a position to be one of the elite wheel companies in the industry and to be that company, we have to tighten up the team and put more emphasis on its future. Jared and I have come to the same difficult conclusion: it is now time for us to make these changes and start anew in 2008. The toughest part of our jobs is being required to demote or cut existing team members. Understand that this decision was unilateral and unavoidable.
As of January 1st 2008, BONES WHEELS can no longer promote a Pro Signature wheel for you nor can we justify paying you a monthly stipend. This also would include not promoting you with Ads, nor can we promote you through any other avenue. If you still want to remain on the team as a flow rider we would love to support you in that sense.

this ain't normal for skateboarding as far as I know, I'm sure powell runs their stuff different, but this seems how you'd be let go from your nascar sponsor.

Nah, I've had to lay people off in the past (not in skating) and I think you have to man up, be honest and explain things to them face to face - it's a respect thing and whilst no-one wants to be let go, I think it's a lot easier if you say the reasons and not be an asshole about it; make it as easy as possible for them and give them as much time as possible to sort themselves out

I rode Powell boards when I first started in the late 80's when Bones Brigade were the shit. Then at the end of the 90's, I skated a lot mini logos and mini logo -wheels cause they were cheap and I went to school at the time and had very little money. As soon as I had more money, never had a Powell product again. Never will.

like jesco said, im being emotional and dumb. im not going to stick to my guns about this argument, to be proved wrong about the matter is fine.. the fact is i amount to the same reputation as many of the "whatever happened to that guy and does anyone really care" and jamie thomas who i took a cheap shot at is obviously going to be a voice in skateboarding for a very very long time. hence, no one should really care to much about what i have to say.
i just never understood why james was let go from circa but thats my own personal opnion beacause im a big fan of jame's skating, him and gershon shared a part in this vid that gershon produced with nc clothing and that part is one of my all time favorites. and i have seen alot of pros get a pass for fucking up,slacking or dropping off the radar but then dudes like james get the shaft. it just dosent seem right in my eyes.
skateboarding is not to be taken to serious but how skating (industry wise) is beeing represented these days is fickled.
so if anyone has an extra shovel i could use it to get this hole dug faster.

Nah man, anything that Jamie and Jayme talk about is shit that they know about, not us. They've peaced out on it, but Jayme is good people... really good people. I sincerely know this to be true. Also, I'm the one who helped connect Jayme with True Love... shit, I even pitched it to him, neither of us knowing anything about True Love except for the fact that it seemed like the perfect small company (at least, that was my angle, and I'm well documented here as being one of TLC's biggest supporters, contributing whatever I could to the company for free because I believed in it before me and the shop severed ties with it). If there's fault there, then it's mine. I saw what I thought was the type of company I would have started if given the chance, and I saw an opportunity to make a connection between said company and a skater that I've always had (and always will) have immense respect for, both as a fellow skater and as a person.
Jayme can speak for himself, but holmes has a lot of stuff on his plate that he's handling up on... but he's still ripping. Can't blame him for not being the Chief. Those two dudes have history, and it's pretty obvious that if Jayme misspeaks or sends out the wrong info, he'll be the first to correct himself, which is possibly the hardest thing for anyone to do in a public venue.
I respect Jamie as well... if there's anyone on this forum that has a reason to think I'm a prick, it would be Jamie (and maybe Jackson) since I leveled some pretty harsh shit at him with the CEO's site, and I was the first to talk shit on him after the thread-erasing incident before he really started posting here. But during that time, my perception has changed nearly 100% (as long as we stay away from theology, hehe).
We're lucky to have Jamie and Jayme here.
And last thing, there are plenty of things to be judgmental about concerning TLC, I won't rehash anything or get into demonizing anyone, but I will give props to James Joiner for sending over the gear he sent on behalf of Big Mike. It was a good gesture... it doesn't discount anything negative that anyone here has dealt with, but he was the first to ship product for us to raise money for Mike's family. I don't support the company, but I'll call out a proper move when I see it. The same thing goes to Jamie, who sent a ton of product (autographed by himself and some of his other guys) for the same benefit. Can't do anything but respect that.
I'm not trying to change your mind, but I'm not down with dismissing Jayme as a "washed up" pro, just as I wouldn't do that to Sanch or anyone else that's contributed to the history of skating, as well as my own entertainment of just watching them ride.
I'm not calling you out, I'm just saying that there's plenty of other folks to hate that would be way more deserving.

Those two dudes have history, and it's pretty obvious that if Jayme misspeaks or sends out the wrong info, he'll be the first to correct himself, which is possibly the hardest thing for anyone to do in a public venue.
I respect Jamie as well... if there's anyone on this forum that has a reason to think I'm a prick, it would be Jamie (and maybe Jackson) since I leveled some pretty harsh shit at him with the CEO's site, and I was the first to talk shit on him after the thread-erasing incident before he really started posting here. But during that time, my perception has changed nearly 100% (as long as we stay away from theology, hehe).
We're lucky to have Jamie and Jayme here.
And last thing, there are plenty of things to be judgmental about concerning TLC, I won't rehash anything or get into demonizing anyone, but I will give props to James Joiner for sending over the gear he sent on behalf of Big Mike. It was a good gesture... it doesn't discount anything negative that anyone here has dealt with, but he was the first to ship product for us to raise money for Mike's family. I don't support the company, but I'll call out a proper move when I see it. The same thing goes to Jamie, who sent a ton of product (autographed by himself and some of his other guys) for the same benefit. Can't do anything but respect that.
I'm not trying to change your mind, but I'm not down with dismissing Jayme as a "washed up" pro, just as I wouldn't do that to Sanch or anyone else that's contributed to the history of skating, as well as my own entertainment of just watching them ride.
I'm not calling you out, I'm just saying that there's plenty of other folks to hate that would be way more deserving.

I got kicked off with a bunch of other people and it kind of did happen that way, only now that I think about it he called me. My reaction might have been why he went to the letter... My ad had just come out and Rob was all "that's the best ad we've ever done for bones" and then like two months later it's "gotta change with the times and get some rail skaters in here." I'm not going to say that you guys don't have a legit beef with bones, but the only person that should have a beef with them is Cliff. If you have never been in the shittiest of shitty industries (skateboarding) you wouldn't know that good skaters are a dime a dozen and EVERYONE is expendable. The business side of skateboarding is cut throat.
James is getting older, it's hard to keep up with the young guys like Malto and Calloway. If bones wants to move forward they have to think about the future, it's just god damn business to them. It sucks, but that's life.
It happened before on a grander scale when vert died. Pretty much the whole field of top vert pros god dumped by their sponsors because they were irrelevant. I'm not saying James sucks or anything but maybe Bones has shifted gears, it happens all the time. Maybe they were sick of being just another wheel company and they want to step their shit up. To do that they have to kick some people off to keep some money for the new wonderkid that's going to make them more money. After all, skateboarding is a business to Bones.
In closing I'd like to say that James fucking kicks ass and has inspired me on so many occasions to push myself harder because I too have had shitty luck with injuries and knowing that someone else out there can do it has helped me through the shitty times. Thanks Cliff!

Cliff is smart- he only puts up the rotten flaw in order to sway chat-geek-skaters (im now guilty) so when he launches his gig, he will have back up.
I'm not sure whats a weaker move or if they are one-in the same....getting a skate-corp email or posting it on a skate blog...

Are you kidding? Sending/writing the skate-corp letter is by far the weaker move. Posting it in a skate-blog is a move towards transparency and allows us, the skate-shit buying demographic, make a little more informed decision before spending our dough.

i got kicked off powell when i was 19, they didnt even tell or send me a letter, they just avoided me till cab said " i heard what happened jayme, thats sucks" i was confused so i said "wait steve, what happened" thats how i found out.
bones the dog was pretty cool, he would just sit around the powell office chewing on wheels. i think he was a golden retriever

so type-shit all you want...this isnt really "cliff" complaining..it lit a fire under his ass to go out on his own, and this partial display of email-interaction is marketing strategie (biz) to try to take down a company 25 years in biz...with damn good wheels...now, hated "lemon drops" in the 90's went from bullets-to spits and Bones makes longest lasting wheel these days.

Well not that it matters because I have said it before I don't really see rob as the dude behind this. So like I said before no hard feelings Rob. Like what Jesco said that would sum most of the reason I decided to put this e-mail up. The wheel co is reaction to the thier action, and I have aways wanted to start a company that had to do with skating. I hope to run Small a bit diffrent than this sit.

I'm not going to say that you guys don't have a legit beef with bones, but the only person that should have a beef with them is Cliff. If you have never been in the shittiest of shitty industries (skateboarding) you wouldn't know that good skaters are a dime a dozen and EVERYONE is expendable. The business side of skateboarding is cut throat.
James is getting older, it's hard to keep up with the young guys like Malto and Calloway. If bones wants to move forward they have to think about the future, it's just god damn business to them. It sucks, but that's life.
It happened before on a grander scale when vert died. Pretty much the whole field of top vert pros god dumped by their sponsors because they were irrelevant. I'm not saying James sucks or anything but maybe Bones has shifted gears, it happens all the time. Maybe they were sick of being just another wheel company and they want to step their shit up. To do that they have to kick some people off to keep some money for the new wonderkid that's going to make them more money. After all, skateboarding is a business to Bones.
In closing I'd like to say that James fucking kicks ass and has inspired me on so many occasions to push myself harder because I too have had shitty luck with injuries and knowing that someone else out there can do it has helped me through the shitty times. Thanks Cliff!
