It wasn't already?

If true Zero had an insane run of it and shaped today's skate world.

Damn, Fallen AND Zero in the same few months? JT's gotta be bummin hard. This leaves Dane, TGunz, and Cervantes totally sponsorless

WHAT WILL JUD FERGUSON DO???
-
If it's true I'm not surprised.
Jamie Thomas can't even figure out his own image so he's like the last guy who should've ever been living through his brand. Had dude not been as shrewd as he was on the businesses end of things Zero would've disappeared when it should've (when it lost it's original identity).
All that being said it really puts into perspective how special Ed and Gonz really are for being able keep their brands true to themselves for as long as they have.

All that being said it really puts into perspective how special Ed and Gonz really are for being able keep their brands true to themselves for as long as they have.
Jamie Thomas's "image" has been less fluid than Reynolds and a lot other who've been around for decades. He built a bunch of brands by himself and poured everything into them. Krooked hasn't been around half as long as Zero, plus it's run by DLX not Gonz. So it's probably easier to Art Direct your brand rather than start a bunch of brands from scratch. Zero defined an era, the same can't be said for many companies

I loved this reference.
I was thinking of adding to the discussion but I'm not sure I will, with the current spate of clickbait threads on here I'm finding this rather difficult to believe. Plus , if Zero does go out of business, I would think it's only a matter of time before ISUCK and others start a new brand.
-
Very sad to see them fold, if that is the case. I loved Zero. It was prety much the embodiment of hard work in skateboarding.

So he changed up creative direction every so often, companies do that from time to time & you could always still buy the zero skull board, so what difference does it make if they do other boards? Besides, you could always follow the general direction they were following. If anything, i'd say zero is (hopefully not has been) one of the more consistant companies around. By your logic Andrew Reynolds lost his way for doing boards other than the red and white baker logo board.

no truth to this whatsoever, Zero is alive and well!!
shutting fallen down was a bummer and hard to do, but as I said in the Jenkem interview (http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2016/04/13/jamie-thomas-on-the-demise-of-fallen-footwear/ (http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2016/04/13/jamie-thomas-on-the-demise-of-fallen-footwear/)) it has allowed me the time and headspace to focus more on Zero, which is actually working and growing again. I'm also focused more on getting out and actually riding my skateboard, which is really all that matters amongst all this chatter.
to address all the pointless jabs in this thread, Zero has never wavered it's direction; it has always been a bunch of misfits with nothing to lose, if anything to our detriment. those that felt that was no longer who they were left and those that continue to appreciate what we are, stay. the changes and evolution of the brand have been a result of the team that for better or worse always changes. Zero is not about the newest trend and we're not trying to be anything we're not. Zero is about the passion to put it all on the line and take it in the nuts for what we love. FTW Zero Or Die!!

Having Cole ditch the baggy yellow t-shirts when he got on contradicts this statement.
-
Glad Zero's not dead, Misled Youth was the first skatevideo I bought. I grew out of their style and brand as I got older, and was more a fan of the Soverign Sect and Crailtap, but Zero leaving would be fucked. Cold War was actually a sick video, and I actually like the team more without Cole. Dane fits Zero perfect, although nothing will ever be as sick as that Misled Youth team, that is iconic Zero for me.

New blood was the 1st skate vdeo i saw (well i saw elementality first, but it was like 144p, so that doesnt count). I was a kid and i was into metal and skulls and all that shit, so zero was my favourite. I really loved their image and "edgyness". I never owned nothing of them because i never found it here in PT sadly.
I think Cole parting aways really hurt hard the company but they can overcome this with some new guys and a killer new vdeo. Some rail madness revival would be sick!

Also, what the fuck are some of you on about zero's image changing? It's always been dirtbag gnarly ass skating to some degree.
I've only bought 1 zero board (the la jolla 18 smith board) but I bought lots of their shirts/hoodies over the years. They were one of the defining companies of the late 90s/early 2000s. Sorry if they're not cool these days.
-
They can pull an ES and go under, then come back on a small scale and go to a good woodshop (like whoever does northern co gawd damn) then people would fuck with the boards and they might be able to be steady again, key word might

no truth to this whatsoever, Zero is alive and well!!
shutting fallen down was a bummer and hard to do, but as I said in the Jenkem interview (http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2016/04/13/jamie-thomas-on-the-demise-of-fallen-footwear/ (http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2016/04/13/jamie-thomas-on-the-demise-of-fallen-footwear/)) it has allowed me the time and headspace to focus more on Zero, which is actually working and growing again.

It was all downhill after they started Mystery honestly. But you're right nothing can make a bunch of random cross and sword graphics worse other than putting them on sweatshop wood.
I guess you don't get tired of being clowned on, we all look pretty favorably upon $lave which happened much after, swords are Darkstars bailiwick, and I don't recall many cross graphics after the initial year or so of his conversion which by its nature isn't random.
I guess I was oblivious to the idea if being "clowned on" on the internet by random kids who can't handle people having opinions that are different than theirs.
Like I said, Zero's been terrible for a lot longer than it was ever cool (to me) and I'm not a fan of Jamie Thomas. Whether you like it or not. It's just weird to me you'd care that much to try changing my mind when I could give two fucks about how you feel

Never ridden a Zero before, the graphics on most of the decks at my local always tend to be uninspiring and somewhat childish (the regular skull deck is the only one I wouldn't mind riding). The videos are sick though, enjoyed the No Cash Value parts, also saw Boserio skating around my city earlier this year, it was awesome to watch.

i collaborated w new balance because i saw where things were going and i felt that having the most conscious athletic brand in history as an ally would benefit fallen by being able to share/keep good sales reps, distributors and support the overhead of fallen and the distribution. i felt like it was our best chance at survival, but a factory and circumstances out of my control ruined the relationship w nb, so we went back to braving the shoe market on our own for as long as we could.

Fuck, that made me laugh. That Ben Horton series looks killer.
Agreed. I'm stoked on the new Ben Horton graphics. Great job. Keep them coming and perhaps give Rowley a guest board?
Also, answer the Berra-bear question iSuck!

So is Horton not with Slave anymore or is like Slave done? That would be sick to see him back with Zero but not at the expense of Slave(obviously)
Actually the last Zero deck I skated was from Horton's last series with them back in like '07.

Does any one know what the x-15 concave is like? It seems that's what's listed for almost all their boards.

Thanks for your time, appreciate it.

I think our main priority here should be getting Chuck D his windbreaker back. I think he'd help us.
I have an American Zero long sleeve T. It has a TumYeto label so you know it's OG, if that'll help.

x-15 is a medium concave; not too flat & not too steep.
hey jamie, would you rather have to hang with steve berra for 10 minutes or have a bear bite off your dick? also remember it can't grow back.
i went on a trip w/ berra to australia in 95 and it was the first time I'd ever left the country. it was so fun and we've gotten along great ever since. i'd hang out w him any day; f the bear

ISuck, little bit off topic but always wanted to know this. Is there any truth to Rattray following you at a demo in London and doing every trick you did right behind you ?
It's definitely a Chinese whispers thing why he got on in Scotland. Would be rad to know from the horses mouth why you put him on, despite him being one of the raddest skaters/people to ride a board.
haha, sorry to kill the whispers, but that never happened; rattray rules
he got on because after traveling and skating with him on the video radio tour for a few weeks, i realized he was as you said one of the raddest skaters/people to ride a board and he mentioned that he wanted to try and make the move to the states, so i offered him a spot on the team and agreed to help him make the move. he's still one of my favorites
Haha cheers for clearing that up. Never seemed to make too much sense; that rumour.
It meant a lot to see someone from Scotland get on such a legit company.

Hey thanks man! Truth is, though, I just wanted to be Ellington and that dream died a long time ago anyway. I used to practice pushing the way he does in the windbreaker line...

fuck all of that, what's the deal with Forrest Edwards?
first off, i think forrest is rad and i love his skating.
that said, it is no secret that he is socially awkward and hard to work with. we knew that going into it, but he would go through phases of being really cool then being totally impossible to work w.
we planned to drop a part, an ad & and interview with the release of his board, but he never came through with the ad or the interview and most of the footage we got 30 days before the deadline was a mix of repeat tricks, already seen stuff from instagram, commercials and homie videos, so we didnt have enough footage for a part.
based on how difficult it was going to be just to release him, i felt like we were setting ourselves up for disappointment, so i pulled the plug.

Never ridden a Zero before, the graphics on most of the decks at my local always tend to be uninspiring and somewhat childish (the regular skull deck is the only one I wouldn't mind riding). I see so many other companies stepping up their artwork, I would be more inclined on trying a Zero if they did the same. The videos are sick though, enjoyed the No Cash Value parts, also saw Boserio skating around my city earlier this year, it was awesome to watch.
i agree we have had phases of kiddie graphics, but I have been focused on involving the team & making rad shit a lot more over the past year. things are also only going to get better as we focus our undivided attention on zero.
yeah, brass rules.
Sick, I'll look forward to upcoming graphics! Might cop a Burman or Boserio deck if I see a sweet one in 8.5 :)

I'm stoked you are skating more Jamie and giving Zero more attention. To me whatever trends are hot there will always be a place in skateboarding for Zero. Technically my first board was a shop blank, but I remember selling my bass guitar so I could buy a serious setup and I was so happy I got the firebirds deck. Thanks iSuck!
thanks man! we're re-issuing that firebird deck later this year as a part of our 20 year celebration!!
Yes! I definitely need to buy at LEAST one of those. Enjoy this celebration, you earned it.
And your answers about Forrest and everything else has been so understandable and professional I respect that. I can't imagine what it is like to start a company back in the "wild" days when board-sponsor consideration was serious to the image, but now money rules all and "keeping it real" is insanely difficult. I owned a shop and failed because I kept it real, so I seriously relate.
Keep it up Jamie Thomas, you are one of my heroes!

Also since zero is at dwindle im surprised they havent had a double impact board in there line up yet, whats the deal with that?

Hi Jamie!
Hello Gipper, hope you've been well!

I think double impact is overkill, so I've chosen to not do it.

Glad Zero isn't done, my first board was a Zero bold and I wore the hell out of Dying To Live as a teen. The company should always be a part of skateboarding.
If you're still into answering questions Jamie, I read that you spent time skating with Sean Young, do you have any good Sean Young stories?

coming in late just to say that I'm glad Zero's not done, dumb move starting rumours like this, bad for skateboarding.

sean young was one of the best, he was the first person I ever saw do a 360 flip; it was just after j lee had a trick tips in the mag. he also was doing ollie impossible before anyone in the southeast. he never knew or cared how good he was. i wish he still skated, but last i spoke to him he was running a construction company and really into poker. he wants to make it to the world series

I'm glad that Zero is still breathing, although I'll always have resentment for them for not releasing those Forrest boards. Get him a full time filmer and take him to all the famous spots and he'll have a part in a week!!
But yeah I feel like things are gonna be taking a turn from the artsy ''fun'' no-comply stuff towards some gnarly rail chomping again. I still love all that weird and creative shit, but it's starting to get played out. Time to go get some hammers! Gonna buy a Zero board next!

Jamie it is so good to hear that Zero is still in business.
The only request I have is that for the next video release, please release a skate sound only edit along with the full edit with the music. One of the most common gripes in the video section here is that the music sucks. Unfortunately, muting the sound means all the lovely grinding and popping noises are gone, too.
Thanks for putting in all of your hard work over the years. Here's to another 20 years of Zero.
-
^
never heard that about a zero video. i always thought the soundtracks fit the videos pretty good. having chris cole skate to that trap rap song tho was weird and didn't fit the aesthetic and it also wasn't funny. maybe the soundtracks are a bit predictable.
i dig the idea about the skate sounds only edit tho, pretty great. i sometimes like to watch parts with my own song of choice and it sucks when you can't hear the skatesounds.
-
In addition, this age of copyrights vigilance could delay a video release. A skate sound only release means you could release it quicker and put the onus of getting the appropriate music that should be paired with the part on the audience. Songs that would cost you a lot to get cleared or would never get approval could be DIY paired by the viewer.
-
Haven't bought a zero board in years but i own hardcopies of all the videos! will you drop a full length of no cash value or will it be a on going web series?

I gave Mrs. JT my chair at the Misled Youth premiere in Tampa and then regretted it because I had to stand there all night when I could have been slightly ruder and sat.

I'm really stoked to hear that Zero is not done. It's one of the few brands that you can say really made a huge impact on skateboarding as far as style, tricks, and filming (whether or not you think those changes were good or bad). As long as we're sharing Zero/JT nostalgia I've got three personal faves. Please forgive the "old man reminiscing" post.
Finding a pair of JT Adio shoes at a thrift store in El Cajon that I'd never seen before and bought them for like 10 bucks. Later saw JT and Erik Ellington filming at SD City College, chief came up to me and asked where I'd gotten those shoes because they were a prototype of his new pro model. I was stoked and wore those shoes way longer than was reasonable.
Nearly getting crushed to death at the Misled Youth premiere at Spreckels and then watching the entire place get destroyed. A lot of drunk industry types responded to the excitement by whipping their dicks out, which I thought was a weird response. Jamie, if you read this, did they make you guys pay for what must've been a ton of damage? I'm pretty sure my fear of large crowds stems from that night. I wish I still had my poster.
When a friend of mine and I drove to Phoenix to see the last demo of the tour at some point in the early 2000's. My friend skated the demo and chief threw him some gas money. I also learned that I never want to smoke weed in 110 degree weather ever again, I could feel each drop of sweat exiting my pores and it was disgusting. We lit off bottle rockets in the Honda CRX on the way back to stay awake, which was consistent with our shit-head behavior at the time.

Also, without talking shit. Is it fair to say that Koston's instagram post that seemingly mocked the downfall of fallen was in bad taste, and that regardless of his feelings about the shoes, a lot of people worked hard to make it work for as long as it did, and that mocking the closing is in bad taste? I mean, that's not really shit talking Koston, its just making a statement in defense of your work. It may not have lasted, but how many shoe companies has koston run?
