Wtf is “hyperpop”
“Hyperpop reflects an exaggerated, eclectic, and self-referential approach to pop music and typically employs elements such as brash synth melodies, Auto-Tuned "earworm" vocals, and excessive compression and distortion, as well as surrealist or nostalgic references to 2000s Internet culture and the Web 2.0 era.”

Your time will come young whippersnapper. I recall my early days here in 01-02ish. Slacking off in a computer animation class that wouldn't have even existed if the teacher didn't show everyone how to use a key generator to crack an old version of 3DSMAX. I remember getting busted a few times as the teacher would creepily use admin network privileges to take control of my cursor and close the web browser I was viewing SLAP on. A few years later he got busted for having a huge grow op out on his rural property. Good times in small-town Canada. Just keep your head on straight or you too might be posting boring subpar versions of Uncle Flea-type rants 20 years later.

To keep things semi-relevant at least... The music sucked but the part was good even though it's not my favourite kind of skating. He goes fast and has fast feet. Definitely some creative stuff but it's pretty obvious he can do better as well.

Hyperpop hardcore punk reflects an exaggerated, eclectic, and self-referential approach to pop punk music and typically employs elements such as brash synth melodies rhythms, Auto-Tuned anthemic "earworm" vocals, and excessive compression and distortion, as well as surrealist or nostalgic critical references to 2000s Internet and the Web 2.0 era 1970s music industry and commercialism culture.”

hyperpop : pop :: hardcore punk : punk

Excessive, reactionary, aggressive, faster, louder, jarring, and what the old heads don't want to admit—not immediately easy to listen to.

It's the same, in a new way, complete with its own fashion, art style, political views, etc. Geriatric millennials hating on hyperpop are baby boomers hating on punk.

Lastly, what a humiliatingly douchey thing to say:
Lots of young dudes telling on themselves here who clearly haven’t read any Mendelssohn, Kant, or Hutcheson to understand the universality of taste.

yeah i agree but i want to point out not liking a song of that genre in a skatepart doesn't necessarily mean someone hates that whole genre or the subculture or generation it is linked to. i don't hate hyperpop per se, i also like some, but i didn't like this song in this part. but it's also no big deal to me. the analogy is a bit wonky because pop and punk share different philosophies from the ground up, so saying hyper-pop is the modern analogue to hardcore punk seems pretty off to me, even if both genres might share some ideological viewpoints.

Thought the skating was gnarly, was confused why he started the part with the nose tap 360 thing and then a little later has him doing it again but with a kickflip before. I know that I know absolutely nothing about edm and all that stuff but this music reminded me of that sinner part

at 5:12 in that video is one of my favourite clips in all of skatevideo history <3

I can't tell you guys, what Gifted Hater likes, but I'm currently teaching electronic music theory at uni, and the students are around his age. Half of them unironically loves hyperpop! (which is basically just taking all tropes of pop music - especially 90s dance pop - and exaggerating it).

With the analogy, I was more so trying to point a mirror at the people saying critical things about a new thing with the same dismissive pretentiousness that every older generation seems to have about younger generations and the things younger people like because they didn't immediately like those things too, even though the same thing probably happened to them with the generation before them.

Punk was probably dismissed by boomers as a tasteless, fleeting, attention-grab by rotten kids the same exact way older millennials are now dismissing Gen Z and hyperpop. It's a boring take.

I get that, but would you agree that just because something is new doesn’t mean it isn’t also terrible?  Like this song, for example.
When nothing in society deserves respect, we should fashion for ourselves in solitude new silent loyalties.

I’m old, and I can’t believe people are making such a big deal out of this song. Thinking things like he used the song as a way to be ironic and shield himself from criticism is a terrible take. Weirder music has been made for decades. What the actual fuck.

You can just be like me and spend your whole life hating popular music so that you're never accused of being old and out of touch. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go listen to Alice Coltrane's "Universal Consciousness".
This is not my SOTY. I'm telling my kids there was no SOTY for 2021
