Yo so I'm moving to the DC Northern VA just wondering where some of the good spots / parks are. I know about Pulaski and GVS and shti.

I live in Northern VA right now, my two favorite parks are probably Arlington (powhattan springs i think it's called, all concrete, great transition section, couple fun hips/ledges) and this new Herndon skatepark that's pretty mellow and also all 'crete. NoVA has some decent street spots, but you have to search for them. There's decent stair sets at George Mason University in fairfax, along with several gems in old town fairfax. in DC pretty much everywhere there's ledges, some nice banks if you go to the schools around South East (bring a friend...or 5. it can get dicey) Malcolm X park has some fun fountains to skate in the fall/winter, and of course sidewalk bumps and ledge stairs and other stuff to get weird on. across the street from the National Art Gallery there's a long, low 5 stair that's pretty popular, along with some more ledges. prepare for lots of ledges. Unfortunately a lot of DC street spots are a bust (surprise surprise), so it's probably best to not spend too much time at any one spot, cruise around a lot.

oh and TC Williams High School has some concrete banks out front that I've heard about recently, you may need to bring a sign or something unless you want to ollie a curb into a bank...and Robinson HS has a long-ish 7 stair, 5stairs out front, and a 3 stair that you can use as like a mannypad to 3 stair line deal. whatever, I'm rambling. basically, there's shit to skate but it can be hard to find sometimes.

there's a fun park in silver spring, north of dc, can't remember what street it's off of, it was an old skate spot and they built a nice park there, if you just cruise downhill from there you run into some nice stuff...

It's pretty small but really fun to skate if it's not too packed. There's a skatepark that opened up in Laurel pretty recently that's probably one of the best parks in Maryland. It's free to skate and you don't need to wear a helmet.

Park police isn't anything like they used to be. If they roll through, you'll just be told to leave and you go back later, skate archives in the meantime.

im staying like a block from the Jefferson memorial on one side the spy museum on the other.
Christmas time will be fortunate from a lack of bust POV.
Jefferson Memorial isn't close to any famous spots. Basically you cannot go wrong from 14th street and Pennsylvania all the way to the capital.
On the west side of 14th is a plaza that has a pretty famous manny pad and long mellow ledge.
Across the street is Freedom/Pulaski which speaks for itself.
going further down Pennsylvania on the north side of the street (left facing the capital) there are about 4-5 famous spots you can't miss. a lot of icy ledges and aesthetically pleasing plaza's and monuments. The skate from freedom towards the capital is actually really dope, super smooth bricks with a dope sounds. it's fun just cruising.
Welfare banks are on the other side of the mall (south side) by the american musuem of natural history/botanical gardens practically before you get to capital hill on independence ave.
The Japanese War memorial is somewhat close to union station and has that long granite ledge on the outside of the plaza. It's hard not finding granite in DC.
i'm pretty sure a lot of spots are still kind of a bust, so you need to be aware of park police and keep moving. i wouldn't stay longer than 20 mins at spots that aren't pulaski and you can sort of wager the level of bust by how many people skating. you sort of just have to walk away if park police is spotted and keep your cool.
DC has so many spots, but the concentration of famous ones are probably within a mile adjacent to Pennsylvania Avenue.
Gold Rail is at Metro center right up from Freedom, it's knobbed but cool to look at, especially at night. it's pretty much the most beautiful rail setting on earth imo.
you'll also go by candian embassay and marvel at the 21 stair.

Welfare has a huge bust factor, last time I was there I got one try, sometimes I’ll get 30 mins. There’s stuff to skate around the entire block though
Maloof is off the stadium armory stop and it’s my favorite dc area park.
Shaw is skating distance from a stop on the green line if I recall.

. I miss bridge spot. Went in 2011 at like 10 pm and we ended up smoking weed with some random kids lurking . I Ollied straight over the make shift manny pad and that was super fun. Fun spot . I miss living in DC hence the slap name haha.

I went to philly basically as soon as I could drive. Took the light rail to downtown Baltimore before that.

green bowl is a dope DIY bowl with chunky coping - 2913 20th St NE
there's a wooden bowl behind union market. hop the fence, or you can shimmy on the gallaudet side.
meridian hill park (also called malcom x) has a bunch of cascading fountains that are empty during the winter. very fun, low key spot to warm up at. was in that recent FA video where they were in DC. if you see park police book it before they hassle you.
if you're feeling hesh, school pool is an abandoned high school with a really crazy pool just over the border from DC. also in that FA video. it's a pretty scary place to go alone, so bring some friends or be prepared to go it alone. I forgot the address, I'll see if it I can dig it up. It's pretty well known, asking some local heads should get you the location.

you'll be fine waving an apology and walking off. if you get a real choad of a cop you might have to book it real quick, but that's unlikely. they're pretty easy to spot coming. the park is also situated on a hill, so it's a quick bomb down 15th or 16th to U street if you're actually being chased. but there's like a close to zero percent chance that'll happen. used to skate there pretty much every afternoon after work and the worst I got was a park cop saying he called the police. I just left before they showed up.

Your itinerary is a good but a few things. The way north is a not that exciting. The first block or so is a pretty steep hill then the next blocks are all very tall office buildings. As a result, if it's around morning rush, the sidewalks will be pretty full and the roads will be packed (and the road is pretty rough). There's not a lot to skate on those blocks either (but you can see the Press Liquors that is still in business due to the folks at Pulaski). That said, if you want to bomb a hill, take the walk and do 13th. It spits right out into Pulaski and it's one way. That said, it's heavily trafficked. You might just want (as many said) to get to Pulaski then push down Pennsylvania to the courthouse. Again, there's plenty of spots along the way and you'll end up at a park with a bunch of downhill ledges and the aforementioned long stairs/ledges across from the National Gallery. Walk a little further and there's the Japanese memorial and that really long ledge. Alternatively, walk across the mall and you're at welfare banks. It's really really compact.
Your hotel is about a five minute walk from L'enfant Plaza. It's a metro hub with access to the green/yellow/silver/orange/blue lines. That's good for getting around. To get to Pulaski, either take the green/yellow to archives and skate down Pennsylvania or take the blue/orange/silver to metro center and it's a block down. That said, you're close enough where (if you have the time) you can rent a bike or walk. You'll walk across the mall and get to see the sights on the way.
For actual skate parks: As aforementioned you can take the green/yellow line to Shaw for the Shaw skatepark. Or take the orange/blue/silver to Stadium Armory for the Maloof Park. Both are about a five minute walk from the respective station. Outside of that, you're looking at a hour plus commute one way on multiple forms of transportation to get somewhere and the cost/benefit isn't worth it.
If you head to Pulaski around 10:00 there might be one or two folks. The later it gets, the more folks show up. Park Police are not like they used to be at that spot. The days of swarming and chasing are over. You'll get booted if anything but that's it (barring an open container and even that is sometimes just a stern warning). However, even that happens with less and less frequency.
One more kind of dad like thing to say is that you're right by the Smithsonian and should take advantage of that fact. It has a variety of things to see, is free, and is really awesome. it opens up at 10 every morning.

I too frequented bridge spot. It sucked seeing it get walled up/pushed out. That said, that place got a lot more time than expected. it seemed it was "being torn down next week" for many years.
Actually went down there a month ago when Pulaski had a festival going on. They tore up the ground, there's huge chucks of rock everywhere, and lots of mud. I got a terrible blunt to rock on the little bump to ledge but the roll in/roll out is trashed. That said there's a brand new brick wave next to it that is really fun and has a kind of hip to drop off the side. Had a ball coming out from under the bridge, popping on the wave, then riding out on the street.

Go on Where's Weed. It's a website that lists most weed companies in the city; gives you their menu/prices/phone number. From there it's usually like any dealer, they'll give you a time and location to meet.

Just find a fucking parking garage. Most garage owners there are actually cool with you skating if you do it late at night. There used to be one in Baltimore who actually let us skaters in after he closed, just so we could skate. He's gone tho, new management.

It’s pretty rare to get kicked out at Malcolm
X (as anyone who is from the city calls it) especially if you go in the morning. In my entire life I’ve been kicked out twice, both times I was asked to leave. Now is a good time to check it out, a bunch of my buddies and I just did a big clean up. Just remember to take your trash.
The Union Market (aka Craters) bowl is a lot of fun. If you want to skate with other people and not have to hop the fence there are big sessions every Friday afternoon/evening.
Both spots are walking/skating distance from metro stops.

Moving to the Kalorama area next month and trying to scope out a good undercover flatground spot for the winter. I'm coming from NYC where all the parking garages are manned 24/7 and pretty hard to skate in. Does anyone have the lowdown on any "indoor" lit up spots near Dupont circle? Or anywhere for that matter? Surprising how hard it is to find a dry, lit up spot in major cities.

Depends on the exhibit. The northern lights thing they have now looks kind of meh, but could be cool. Kind of hard to tell from the photos on their website.

Also try looking across the Potomac River in the Tyson's Corner area of Northern Virginia. That whole area is full of underground parking garages that are deserted outside of business hours Mon-Fri.

theres street parking all around it so you can probably find something. it's in middle of downtown so lots of places to eat but nothing will be super cheap. rice bar or &pizza for fast casual.. astro doughnuts for a good fried chicken sandwich or district taco for some okay mexican
almost 0 bust factor but if it's a friday/weekend there's a chance there will be some event or protest meetup happening there

Basically what everyone above has mentioned already, once you're at Pulaski if you just skate up Pennsylvania Ave towards the Capitol you'll find a ton of famous spots: courthouse, Japanese memorial, Potbelly's, welfare, etc. Malcom X park is good in the winter since they drain the fountains and its a chill lil bowl spot. The newly redesigned Shaw skatepark is a ton of fun too.

Edit: Also worth checking out Crushed Skateshop, they good ppl and will also have a bunch of good reccomendations

There’s a ton a spots between Pulaski and the court house and welfare is a few blocks from the court house. Plenty of stuff in a mile radius

I haven’t been there recently myself but have seen photos and clips of people skating it. It’s always been mellow when I’ve gone and suspect you will be ok.

Hell yeah! I like skating that statue as a manny pad too. Glad you didn’t get hassled. Would have felt like a dick if we said you would be good and you got the boot or a fine lol. New Shaw is cool but I don’t make it out that way much. The ledges at maloof are kinda my go to for parks around there

Yeah Bridge Spot is still there and skateable.
Pulaski/Freedom is nice & chill now, never really get hassled too much now, my go to day is Sunday because free parking and less people.
However, there are ongoing talks of renovating the current plaza unfortunately...

Freedom had a pride event setup don’t know if it’s still up. That was yesterday. Still places to skate. Bust level is non existent on regular days.

Haven't seen homies post much at the fort lately, but did notice last weekend from Crushed that they finally cleared up bridge spot and brought down some obstacles for a little event. So that was cool to see.
Also what's good with this new skateshop, Sister? Is this the new DC shop that will (hopefully) last and stick around?

went to the shop today. It’s a streetwear consignment store right above it. They said they sold out of shop board which is cool. No shoes and limited trucks/wheels options. Brand image is cool excited for the future.

Growing up strict Mormon the closest Mormon Temple to Prince Edward Island at the time was in Washington DC, my favorite city in the world.
I wasn't aloud to bring my skate on Temple trips in case I broke a bone ie.
I went on Temple Trips from the age of six , I was converted, not my choice until I was around 16 ish.
My favorite place there is the Smithsonian Institute n the Temple as well , it's all marble ,I was doing baptisms for the dead haha
Best times of my life though, we'd cut through NYC , Boston ie
The Reagan Era , I was there , my Mom Dad Sister n myself hiding under the bed , gun shots all night , it was buck wild .

I know the team behind Archives. Their plans for the shop went into motion immediately following Crushed shutting down. Took them a good while to find a space, they wanted to find something ground level in a decent foot traffic area. The main dude behind Archives was involved in helping Crushed for a good while, has also helped other shops behind the scenes. He decided it was time to do it for himself. Just need this weather to break over here so people can be outside more and skating. He's adding accounts almost daily and bringing in new product. A few brands and distros wouldn't open the account until the doors were open, minor hurdles. He opened the shop for the right reasons, he's not in it to make a profit or be the cool guy shop.

If you look at one of the most recent posted comments in Jimmy's post, the dude with the groundhog(?) profile pic sounds like one of the park employee who has been working on site and seems like mostly cosmetic fixes are being done.
Powerwashed the wax off ledges, marble on steps/ledges being replaced and drilled in skate stoppers, finishing next month.
Easy fix hopefully to get back to normal.

The plaza, yeah it’s dumb. I was watching some Stevie Williams doc ln and kalis was talking bout when they used to beg them to go skate love park. That’s what I want, the city to get fucked so bad they beg us to go skate the park. Or some knobbed clips.

godspeed to the G planning to de-knob. shit is tantamount to a brazen crime & defacement of millions of federal taxpayer dollars of renovation in their eyes. the "we don't have a skatepark" ship has sailed ages ago. i'm shook just thinking about the stakes of this mission. they're ready to make an example out of somebody.

So looks like archives got the nike contract. Not necessarily my thing but I hope it works out. Some Nikes really be tough. Would love to see a line outside the shop or it to be the place to be for the sneaker community. It’s clearly a skate shop first
And now Sister just announced they got the Nike goods too, glad to see these brand new shops get established pretty quickly .
But those knobs across that sacred marble at the plaza hurts the soul, we all know orange won't last as long as those things. Just gotta be patient and hope we can re-claim the parks!
