If you can find the Director's Commentary it is well worth watching. John Sturges gives a masterclass of filmaking in it.

Here's a good one, its not sorcerer good but its good--
a 'neo-western' from 1955 - Bad Day At Black Rock

A one-armed stranger visits a rural town to uncover a secret crime. The way the protagonist is so straight up with the people who are trying to shit on him is reminiscent of Bogart in Casablanca. Both characters are the epitome of genuine. The type of guys who were descendants of the men who boldly marched into coverless gunfights in the Civil War. Its for sure a talker but the subject matter is still pertinent today, the climax is way better than what one would expect out of a 70 year old movie. Big Lee & Ernest Borgnine are up in it so that should sell it right there.

I really enjoyed "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die." I did not go in with high expectations though considering Gore Verbinski hadn't made a film in a while.

Re-watched Trees Lounge. It is an entertaining film. It is interesting choice for Buscemi. I find it curious that in his writing-directing-leading actor film, he decides to frame his character as the charming bar fly alcoholic adulterer. I'd be curious to hear about the inspiration for this film. And it makes me wonder what he is like outside of his roles.

It is a completely different character than he played in Ghost World, which is an obvious comparison with relationship with the much younger lady.

I'm so lame. This was far more engaging than I thought. A bit of crazy, a bit of Goffman, a bit of existentialism, and a lot of monologuing. But it works.

Love Trees Lounge. Love all the characters. Really liked His relationship with his classmate’s daughter.(Chloe Sevigny). I think the movie could be a vision of what his life would have been like without acting. Stuck in his home town in Long Island. Living above a lounge which is just a watering hole. I have a simplistic view of movies where if I care about the characters I care about the movie.

If you wanted to do a Long Island double feature I would recommend L.I.E. With Brian Cox. He’ll, I just found the entire movie on Daily Motion.

Here's a good movie: Down By Law by Jim Jarmusch starring Tom Waits & Roberto Begnini

3 guys with inter-twined pasts spend time in jail
its low tech but the story & characters will make you smile.

...also stars "rockets redglare" the guy who was with Sid & Nancy the night Nancy died, his story is nuts even without that fact.

I haven’t seen that in a long time. I remember liking it. Mishima: A Biography by John Nathan is a really interesting book about him, highly recommended.

My Japanese professor claimed he used to lift weights with Mishima and that he was “a toad”. I don’t know exactly what he meant and my professor was kind of full of shit sometimes.

I watched A Scene At The Sea from the Beat Takeshi archive I posted on the previous page and I liked it a lot. Ostensibly about a deaf garbage man who learns to surf, it’s really more about the vibes. Wistful and nostalgic and I think I related to it a a skater as well.

Toad – through use of the Toad Style, a practitioner can make themselves invulnerable to just about any form of damage (such as slashing and piercing-based attacks). The weakness of this style is that any master of the Toad Style has a "weak spot" that, when punctured, drains him/her of all the style's benefits, most notably their iron body.

Really solid. The most coen-esque movie not made by the coen bros. Although i know they're close to Raimi.

Really enjoyed Project Hail Mary.

yep, i loved it myself--thinking about it in this genre of films, i dig how comparatively honest it is about heroism and how humanity would behave in this kind of situation.

the whole awakening sequence in the beginning of this movie especially--combined with his role in The Nice Guys (with Russell Crowe)--has made me a true believer in Ryan Gosling's comedic skills...

Check out Half Nelson or Lars and the Real Girl - those show the beginnings of that side of him.   Oscar nominated for Half Nelson, too

On the topic of street kids, I watched Streetwise recently about street kids in Seattle during the 80’s. Raw and well made doc.

Whale Rider is a great movie. It makes me cry when she makes that speech at the end. Not bad for a kid picked out of a crowd.
They laughed when I told my friends that I was going to be a comedian.....well they are not laughing now!

Does anyone know how I can watch The Son of the Shark without buying it from Amazon?

I’ve been trying to rewatch this for ages after watching it in the 90’s.
