Started skating in like...83 or so? Took 10 "years off" to become a big mess. Sober now and skating as much as my old, non-pro, not-that-talented body can manage. Fucking love it. If you love skating, you'll come back to it...you'll have to because you'll start dreaming about it all the time and it will drive you nuts if you don't.  I dig this thread, actually. Everybody's actually being kind and intelligent if you skip CotG's posts.

yeah i went from like 82-3 to 87-8 then phased into other things.  got a board in 92 with some tiny wheels, skated some but didn't really get back into it. then one in 94? that i rode like twice.  then in like 98 i'm walking in the city with my girl at the time and say, "you know, my head still turns every time i hear that sound"  she replies "you should get one babe"

six months later it's, "where were you?  dinner's cold."

"umm well i came across this funny little ledge" or "did you know that there's a bank behind the bank?"

There have been times that I haven't been able to skate as regularly as I would like, but then you get horny for some skateboarding again, and you find yourself forsaking work/school/girlfriend just to go skate.

I love skating and I've done it on and off for 20 years.  I've always done it for me and the enjoyment I know I get from it (e.g. skating late night during university so I wouldn't go insane), but life happens and it is hard to keep an activity front and centre when you have responsibilities and other parts of life to try.

There is nothing wrong with taking a break when the alternative is forcing yourself to do something.  It's lame if you don't try new shit and hold onto skating despite being burnt out on it.  If you come back then good for you, and if you don't then realize you will always look at stairs, ledges and the rest of your environment the same as you do now.  There will always be a part of you connected to skating.

note: before letting it go for a minute I agree with the above comment to bomb a hill.

skateboarding isn't a life long commitment for everyone and no one shouldn't feel pressured to skate if you don't enjoy it.
theres only a handful of people i grew up skating with that are still skating today.  its not a big deal.

i havent reallly lost interest in skateboarding but i definitley dont look at it the same way i used to. i used to just want to get really good, and do said tricks down bigger rails and stairs. back then i probably progressed way faster because id spend like hours per day, EVERY DAY, practicing.

then i started smoking weed and getting lazy, and started filming a lot less and started to care more about getting laid and shit like that. then they built a skatepark liek 2 blocks fmo my house. so i stopped skating street almost all together.

then i got into skating street again and tried to do the whole progression thign, came out with a part, it was pretty crappy, so now i am really into just cruising down the street and trying to do tricks that way . i can only do like 10 tricks but i have them all so down now its pretty rad. so i just do those 10 tricks at different spots and in different variations, and i usually only skate liek twice a week for about 2-4 hrs per session. in the summer its more but i have def toned it down and it seems more fun that way.

i cant focus on stuff like i used to... like i cant just sit and play guitar either, or starcraft, i can do it for about an hour, then i need to do something else. thats kind like me with skating i like to just chat with friends for about half the session to break up the skating
