What woodshop does blankdecks.com come from?
« on: October 25, 2023, 07:12:53 AM »
I’ve tried searching for this topic but can’t find any info and I’ve emailed their customer support but they never reply. I was just curious if any of you know where the blanks come from on blankdecks.com. I’ve rode a few and they aren’t that terrible but was just wanting to know more.

Thank you for these! I did actually see both of these threads but they don’t say what woodshop blankdecks uses. Am I missing it?

The worst grip job I ever did was on a board from blankdecks.com. January of 2005. It was the second board I ever gripped myself. I forgot to file the sides down.
Thanks for the memories.

Control.

I ordered boards from them 3 years ago couldn’t find a clear top photo on my phone. but they have the “2” stamped on the top ply.

I found them really flat. It’s also possible that they switch up suppliers like a lot of folks these days.

I think the hardest part about some suppliers, is as Twist said, they may or may not want to say, being that they will get whatever boards they can for as cheap as they can, so it can change if they have access to bulk wholesale lots or whatever they can get their hands on.

Best advice is check the tops of the boards for any markings, stamps in the wood, even the smallest nail hole or punch marks if nothing else which manufacturers use to easily show which end is the nose.

Some do laser engraving of sizes, others do numbers for which press they come from (Control) or others have different things they put on the boards.

Most of these cheaper boards usually come from China, often unknown / difficult to track down woodshops, so getting some real information from the supplier is difficult, or the company will just flatly refuse to say, which might be the case here.

I haven't checked into them for a while now, with similar questions turning up nothing, as you have discovered.

Guessing at most they are reasonable middle quality boards, but if they work for you and are in shapes, concave or whatever that give you good value for money, then go for more.

Some people can afford to get twenty or more at a time, which is all good and well, but for most, buying a few boards at most at a time is a lot easier, so having somewhere that has no minimums is always good.

Big brands like PS Stix (which a lot of people like) have been running smaller minimums more recently, but they might be a little harder to get singles from.

On that note, just also saying the skatesamples.com site is also a really good one if you are based in USA, as they are BBS boards and what some people would say one of the best in the industry.  Personal opinion and whatever else aside, have a look there if you hadn't already.

Link to Woodshop thread with a post from someone with all the board sizes, shapes and other info too:

Tgm sales control blanks under their “moose” label. Be sure to get the ones that say “Canada” in the title and double check the description.

The reason we were suggesting all these other threads is because there are a whole bunch of blank websites that we know exactly where the boards come from as multiple people have ordered and confirmed the woodshop via sticker, engraving etc. as woodsshop said. they are probably a better bet. But it looks like we got to the bottom of this in the end and they seem to be made by Control at some point so that's really all we have to go on.

Man, all your guys responses are great. I went digging down the rabbit hole on some of those brand and woodshop threads… LOL

Control.

So you're saying they were one time control but who knows anymore? I do remember a stamped 2 on my board actually - is that control then?

So after digging on all those threads I really just want a few BBS blanks but ordering from that site seems to be the most economical if I buy like 5 at least at a time. Is that the cheapest way to get BBS blanks? What about the cheapest way to get a PS Stix blank since theirs are comparable?

I did some calling around to some local shops near me on so cal and one shop I used to get decks from when I was a kid is still around and he said all their blank decks they sell are Clutch blanks and they only sell them for $25. Do you think that's my best bet? or should I hunt around for BBS blanks around me or online?

SoCal has psstix blanks, right now they’re having a 15% off sale.

Yes blank decks was control. They probably still are, but since time has passed, you can never sure.

You can order blanks direct from BBs from skatesamples.com

I’m pretty sure woodchuck uses bbs. They also offer free shipping

https://woodchucklaminates.com/

But All they say is that their decks are cold pressed in Mexico using Canadian veneers. There’s no identifying mark on the board except for nose divot. I dont think clutch does that.

oh sweet, I checked out socal and they sell bbs and psstix blanks.

I actually emailed woodchuck and they said: We press the boards in Canada and finish them in california and also apply the graphics on the decks

so not sure what woodshop they use in Canada but they're not bbs

If a local shop has Clutch wood that you can go to and see and stand on the boards, that is a good option too.

I would very much want to see, touch, stand on any board if I could, just to check it out before buying, especially if you are not completely sure of what sort of board you want.

Clutch are like any other board manufacturer, in that some people on here will swear they are the worst and others swear they are the best, but like BBS and PS Stix, they are made in Mexico, then shipped up to stores in USA, as well as having a solid supply of boards, so a lot of places can get them a bit cheaper than BBS or even PS Stix in recent times.

They are about mid range in concave and kicks, very similar shapes as well to others, but they do have a few options there, some more rounded, some more square, some more pointy, etc.

If you know what you want and can afford it, getting a few (or more than a few) boards at a time will work out cheaper from anywhere that has shipping costs too, but if a shop has a good % off and free shipping, it might work out cheaper than buying direct from a manufacturer web site.

A few options anyway.

Well I guess you have the most recent information.

Either way, I’ve used woodchuck for boards in the pass and they were excellent.

Woodchuck supposedly has their own presses but I also wouldn't really trust anything they say in terms of the provenance of their boards. They were always kind of cagey about it when I asked so I just assume they're doing the same thing as everyone else and importing Chinese wood and trying to pass it off as something else. If you go through the decoy supply site you can find c7 ones that are easily 10+ years old for sale.

Just to throw something else in the mix here.

Do people prefer boards with stains of any kind, be it top and bottom, top only, bottom only, the more the merrier, or happy to ride all natural decks?

Then to add to that, if a stained board was more expensive, would you pay extra for nice colours?

I had a conversation with a few people the other day about this, after one manufacturer / distro was saying they order boards with only one layer stained as they cost less now.

Some people have said if they see a board without a stain, they think it is a cheaper board and will not touch it, others saying they don't like natural tops or bottoms, so it is an interesting one.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.
