Has anyone tried this 8.38 Gerwer Backpage egg? 8.25 in. trucks I’m guessing? What do you think of it?

Trying to find an egg on the smaller side and this one caught my eye.

Never tried a smaller egg, but 8.25 (or even 8 inch) trucks would be fine. I live in the 9 (and change) egg range and those all taper roughly 1/2 inch by the time they get to the trucks. I rock 8.75 trucks on all the 9.1/9.25 eggs I skate.

I think there have been a couple of those in setups or in this thread.

They have a tiny tail, not just small, but tiny, so if that is your thing, it should be good.

Here is one:

Any consensus on truck size for egg shape if you are you would rather size up or down in cases where two options would work?

If it tapers towards the back i would aim for a truck closer to the width over back bolts

Personally I don't like my trucks sticking out any set up,  shaped or popsicle

All preference tho

It does depend on the board, to some degree, but I think most people ride trucks the size down from what would be the width of the deck, eg

AH Huffer 9.18 works best with 8.75 size trucks (such as Indy 159s on my Huffer)

Heroin egg 9.5 skates well with 9" trucks as it does taper a bit more.

AH 8.75 egg has been set up with 8.5" trucks from someone else's board.

The 8.3 and 8.25 egg was on 8" trucks.

Some people do run wider trucks than that on them and they still work, but with the significant taper, as said, it often does look a little weird with wheels sitting outside the line of the deck.

Cross post from the setup thread

My first jumbo egg (10” / 14.625” wb), and second egg overall (first was the 9” Quasi Pool Skater Face w/ 14” wb)

Definitely liking this thing better than the Quasi. It skates the way I imagined an egg should skate. Those 9” Quasis feel a lot smaller because of the tiny wheelbase and the pronounced taper.

The 10” Heroin still feels like a boat. I have Ace 66 classics on it and they seem to fit just about right.

I tend to go about 1/4" narrower than the width of the deck at its widest.
So a 9" egg = 8.75" trucks.
Huffer which is 9 1/8", either 8.75" or 9" axle trucks.

I think eggs are better with wheels slightly tucked in. But there are no rules...

I always size down because of the taper. I use 8.75 in. trucks on 9-9.25 eggs and 9 in. trucks on 9.5+. You generally have 0.5 in. taper from the middle (widest point) to the area overthe trucks.

Edit: I've got pictures of a couple 9.125 eggs with 8.75 trucks in the scrape report if you want a visual example.

I went up actually, I have the 9.12 Grimple egg and have Thunder 161s on them. Sure they Hot Rod a bit but this is mainly for cruising and grinding curbs and tranny so the extra space makes it so much easier for grinding and I can still do flip tricks when I throw them out.

Not quite sure if it is my eyes or what, but this "shaped" board looks more tapered than a normal popsicle but maybe not quite in the realm of an egg...

Thanks @rocklobster for the heads up on the Pizza boards now seemingly back on PS Stix too, as they seemed to move to Clutch during the shortages and period of issues in 2020 to 2021.

Ha yeah, looking again at the bigger image, I guess it is a bit more tapered than I first thought, but it reminds me more of a Baker deck than some of the egg shapes I have been used to seeing.

Anyway, at least it is another option.

Not sure how many people would be down for the 14.5 wb though - sure I like them longer, but many others like them shorter.

has anyone used any egg shapes with the AF-1 77? I am debating on using these with a 10.0 curb killer but i am not sure if they will poke out in the taper.

Just ordered some AF1 77 and a curb killer, read back on this thread someone using classic 66 and the curb killer and it looked spot on maybe a tad short. So 77s should work perfect, I believe the deck tapers to around 9.5 over trucks so exact for the 77s

The 10” curb killer I posted earlier in this page is on ace 66s, so you can have a look there for some idea of what it’ll fit like. Personally I think the 66 is ideal and wouldn’t go bigger, but I prefer axels slightly tucked rather than hot rodding

Classics or AF1?, I’ve really enjoyed my 169s on a 9.25 and wouldn’t want to go smaller on bigger decks, so hoping the 9.5 axel is spot on for the egg. The 9” AF1 just seems a tad too short on bigger setups in my head.

Fos always lists the width over the trucks in the catalog and the Curb Killer is 9.5:

Gotcha, thought as much. Yeah 9.35 to 9.5 is a pretty minor jump at this width. Love the naming conventions!

We need a change.org petition to standardize truck naming conventions. Call them by their actual widths.

Toy Machine 8.875" (My last Toy Machine board was probably Kerry Getz pro debut)
Independent 169
Spitfire F4 classics worn from 50 down to about 47mm

I usually like a magic carpet but decided to try something different this time with the 169s. Could just be a fluke but I actually really like it.

I know some people love them a lot, but the eggs I have are really only more "fun cruisers" I like to have a different skate on to my normal board.

I switch between Huffers and a 9 inch square tail Heroin deck. Sometimes I skate my 8.5 popsicles but after skating wide decks for some time I don't like how squirelly they feel while doing ledge tricks.

For me it depends what I’m skating. I use my egg for curbs primarily, and sometimes for parks. I set it up with 53mm 99a classics so it’s fun for slappy combos and other wacky stuff.

When I’m skating ditches, diy, or anything crusty I would usually go for something else that’s more directional and stable. My “other” daily driver is a polar Dane 1 with 97a 56mm conical fulls, which is a lot more effective at charging over crappy surfaces

Lately I’ve been enjoying the curb killer so much that I am making a point of skating spots that go nicely with it, and it’s been my daily driver.

I have some Indy 149s and an 8.5” popsicle on ice at the moment, I’m thinking they would make a good “normal” board for the rare occasion that I want to skate ledges, park, or other “normal” stuff… but tbh that doesn’t happen very often these days

So I guess the short answer is that it depends what I’m skating

Right now I have a Crailtap Phawt, a Heroin 9" symmetrical and a Bannerot Couch, set up. So 100% of my skateboard time is eggy.
