Did anybody cop up on the fingerboard set from early screenings? They're doing wonders on eBay now.

"my hats off to Jonah for taking on an impossible subject. "
Impossible? Seems pretty damn simple compared to most films attempting to portray an "art form".
Depicting the time frame as apposed to commenting on it originally.

"I Haven't even seen the movie yet"

"If you haven't seen the film, you shouldn't be commenting negatively in this thread, imo."

Don't comment negatively, but I will make claims about the film, at the exact same time I contradict myself and tell myself I'm an idiot.

"I might weigh back in once I see it"'
The mind boggles. It really boggles.

I said you shouldn’t be commenting negatively on something you haven’t seen or experienced, so I didn’t. There is no contradiction there. But sweet reading comprehension, hate on.

Honestly, the main reason I am turned off by the movie (having only seen the trailer) is that I was born in the mid 80's. I was a little kid in the mid 90's. I had an older brother who loved skating and hip hop, so you know I was stealing his shit.

I do not feel nostalgic for this. It makes me feel incredibly old.

When I was growing up, many coming of age films/shows were set in a "classic" time: Dazed and Confused (70s), That 70's show, etc.

I wasn't ready to be a classic, Jonah.

Oh my god you guys someone makes a decent movie about skateboarding and you guys are picking it the fuck apart ... Holy fucking shit. I love slap.

decent movie? skateboarding totally aside, the script sucked, the plot was paper thin, the editing was terrible, and i dont need to see a film in theaters cropped to 4:3.
Do you only watch new releases? Plenty of classics in 4:3 that play in revival theaters all the time.

I agree with Lenny.

Saw this flick this afternoon. I liked it, but didn't think it was "good." The acting was decent (especially the older brother and mom, both "real" actors) and Nakel really surprised me too. Most of the skating parts felt like they were also done "right."

But the entire thing felt really flat. Disjointed and rushed. A lot of good scenes, but overall it seemed like very little happened and the whole thing seemed pretty pointless.

Sort of the opposite of what I thought it was going to be like. Thought the movie bits would be better and the skating bits would be lackluster, but the opposite seemed true to me.

Wished the movie was focused on the older brother or Ruben more - very little happened with those characters but they were still far more interesting than Stevie.

Haven't seen it yet, but I've seen every other skateboarding move in existence. Would you rather end the movie with a downhill race and/or a joust?

From the title of the movie, I get that this was supposed to be a glimpse in time.

No I don't, but it's not really a skateboarding movie, so I feel like the options for the ending are more wide open. It felt like it wasn't ever moving towards anything and none of the main characters showed any growth or development. I enjoyed it, and the skateboarding bits were good, but it didn't do much for me. Also seemed short...I think less than 90 minutes. Interested to hear what you think when you see it.

Saw it.....definitely not Deer Hunter but I still enjoyed it for sure.

The one thing that stood out was how Nakel could hold his own acting.....I hated all the IC stuff but it's grown on me, a lot of its based on mikey Alford not being 40.

Honestly if spike made the movie people would be bitching that it felt like a girl video....
How would you say it portraied 90s skate culture? Was it made with a delicate touch or was it Jonah trying to squeeze in everything 90s to seem legit?

Things aren’t cropped if they are in 4:3.  That’s the Aspect ratio they shot with.  Cropped implies someone cut something out and it’s really weird to hear someone complain about that

To be fair they do crop it in this case. The native aspect ratio for super 16 is 1.66:1. But they crop it with the 4:3 frame in mind while shooting so nothing is left out that isnt intended. I know you prob meant that but my OCD made me explain this.

Just saw it.  Definitely the least corny movie about skateboarding ever made (I'm not sure if that's a compliment or not since I love Grind).  Having grown up in that same era, everything was surprisingly authentic.  Na Kel did a great job.  There was a more terrifying jump scare in this than in the new Halloween or The Nun.  I honestly didn't see people partying that hard when I was that age though.  Overall, good push, nice flick.

maybe cropped was the wrong word choice, i guess id rather see a larger frame, especially in the theaters

I'm just curious if they were skating 7.5 - 7.75 decks?

Yeah the decks were those sizes. I'd say its one of the best depictions of a different era Ive seen on film. Which makes the movie's flaws more annoying.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but the use of 4:3 is discussed in here, amongst other things:
https://filmschoolrejects.com/jonah-hill-and-the-cast-of-mid90s/
Honestly overall it looks corny and pandering to me, but maybe I'll change my mind once I actually see it.

I listened to way too much Jonah Hill and you wish he just did Fresh Air but I get it...he's pumping the shit out of this and yes....it's annoying.

He said he was originally going to splice in footage of the guy who's always filming in the movie.  It didn't work out or it tested poorly so they left it as it is....he did touch on too though how it's consistent w. skating at the time.

The one flaw I saw was the guys skate too modern....people kickflip differently now...super super picky thing....

Watched a couple of interviews, we get it you like 90s hip hop and skating. I guess if a lot of people had his resources this is the cringey shit they'd do, you're not special for liking the 90s. I feel like he's he hung around boring hollywood people for a while and then this is his 'I have a personality' piece, just watch mouse and go to bed.
So Colllin have the same t-shirts, seven years by now, at least...

If I'm not mistaken, I also saw a slappy crook on the ledge at courthouse which seems too modern. Also don't know if people did this in the 90s too but I noticed when Nakel was setting up Sunnys board he poked holes in the grip first before cutting the edges wtf

All you idiots on the first page claiming Jonah wasn't a skater...come on dude had that mini top 5 I remember seeing when it came out, you don't pick those parts if you don't skate.
[close]

Exactly. Critical thinking y'all, it's not that difficult.

Also, I'm assuming most people talking about how the movie looks like it's going to be shit are casual movie goers who stick to superhero movies, star wars, etc., because if you know anything about A24, the company putting this out, you'd know 90% of their releases are incredible films. Easily the best American production/distro company in film right now.
[close]

lol. Jonah's top five are everybody's go-to five. He probably Googled "Best skate videos" for his answer. Not buying this shit get off the kids dick. Or don't, Fred Durst is realer than this kook and thats damn near impossible

Watched a couple of interviews with Jonah promoing the movie and it looked to me like he's trying way too hard to be down. he's an a director/actor and definitely intelligent so he knows to do his research. In all the interviews he's talking about how hip hop and skateboarding have been appropriated and presented in the worst ways in mainstream movies and he's here to make a movie for "the people". hollywood is wierd man.

So the movie is cool but if you don't skate or never were actively involved in this culture,
you can't speak and act like you are part of it.

I don't think so, that was how I did them back then. Actually I couldn't pop into a crooks at all back then. Learned the slappy first in 1994.

I was only 5 years old, 2 years away from getting on a board for the first time. Crazy.
