Mindfield vs Fully Flared
« on: January 09, 2019, 06:45:11 AM »
It looks like Mindfield beat out Stay Gold in the thread started by Roast beef. I really enjoyed everyone's opinions so I think it would be fun to keep it going. Mindfield vs Fully Flared.

I'd go fully flared. Koston, Mariano, Carroll, Howard, Marc, Puig, JB, and some Wu Welsh. Love mind field, but like flared a smidge more.

No way. Fully Flared is the end of an era. Last big successful skate video.

Fully Flared without a doubt. Mike Mo possibly had the best intro of all time followed by Marc Johnson with the greatest ender of all time and Guy Mariano with the greatest comeback of all time.

On top of that, you had insane parts from Biebel, Koston, Jesus Fernandez, Lucas Puig, Caroll...Mindfield just doesn’t compare IMO, and I love Mindfield.

This comparison seems a little more apt.

Fully Flared is a smorgasbord of great skating and has a great lineup but it's bloated as hell. There's too much slow-mo, a TON of filler (almost everyone with a multi-song part could have been contained to a single song), way too many China spots, lots of semi-defunct ledge combos, and two Band of Horses songs. Sans AO, Carroll, and Koston's parts (maybe a few others), it hasn't aged well. A decade on, Mind Field still endures. Alien Workshop had a more diverse lineup at the time, with plenty of people who would go on to become legends. The music and editing is much more palatable, and Fully Flared doesn't have a single part as great and -  dare I say it? -  as influential as Jake Johnson's part.

Mind Field wins again.

I always thought that (for me) mind field was the end of it.  I don't live in california.  when mind field came out, it premiered in an actual movie theater here.  I was going to point that out in the other thread, because by the time that stay gold came out, that wasn't even a thought.  i hold mind field dear because of that (on top of it being a great video), however fully flared was on another level when it came out.  I remember we would break out the laptop at a spot to watch it
i don't want to link to the channel because is promotes athiesm.

We rewatched fully flared on a rainy day a couple months ago.  Too long, ledge combos a many, just wasn't as impactful on rewatch.

pop’s part in flared is still in heavy rotation. super ahead of it’s time: blah blah blah it’s been said 100 times before.
still gotta go with mindfield though.

I wasn’t blown away my Marc Johnson’s part, found it a bit boring to be honest, I would have enjoyed it more if it was condensed down to a two song part rather than 3. Overall I watched mindfield more. So mindfield for me.

I think I like FF more. Even though Ty's editing was pure trash. Can't beat MikeMo's first major and last good part.

Also not close. Fully flared by 10 miles. Mindfield is completely overrated and i could easily name 20 better videos.

I didn't watch mindfield when it came out except for grants part. Animal collective and band of horses are the same type of terrible. I feel like mindfield has the advantage of coming out towards the 20teens, fully flared was dragging us out of that mid 00s funk. Last time I sat through fully flared I couldn't sit through it. It was a skate video designed almost for non skateboarders. I was trying to hype up my girlfriends little brother about skating, showed him some trailers for videos and nothing appealed to him until he saw the fully flared trailer. He said the videos without slomo and fancy camera moves made skating look 'easy and boring'

Those china spots with the grey sky sucks the life out of any clip - and fully flared had way too many china clips

Fully Flared has the better skating in my eyes (not that Mindfield is lacking), but Mindfield is the better constructed video in regards to editing. This makes it really tough.

I'd rather sit down and watch all of Mindfield, but I'll probably re-watch more parts from Fully Flared individually.

Just imagine a Fully Flared edited by Greg Hunt.

Mindfield was edited a lot better and obviously has more rewatch value, but Fully Flared basically came in and changed the game. As great as I think FF is, it's a good example of something that's more influential than it is good.

Pretty sure Roots has a shorter run time  than Fully Flared.  Great skating, but the fucker just never ends.
