Torn acl
« on: April 22, 2019, 06:40:53 PM »
I’m dealing with some WACK ASS injuries right now, getting surgery in about a month on y right knee to repair a torn acl and medial tendon blabla
Anyway, I know on the nine club some skaters mention having the same injury. I’d really appreciate if y’all named a few. Mention your own shitty injuries stories, recovery stories, comparison from before and after, etc.

i worked mine out under water twice a day for an hour. if you have access to a pool it’ll help. look up under water knee excercises. the water resistance is good for your muscles.

just blew something out in my knee 2 weeks ago. been fully hobbled since. had my MRI today and will know the score tomorrow. best case scenario its the mcl with a 6 week no surgery recovery. worst is acl with surgery and not a push for 12 mths. second time its happened in 4 years (first one "healed up" enough where I didnt bother with MRI, etc.) so I'm expecting the worst.

maybe the skate gods will have mercy on my soul but my frame has been taxed and I'm afraid its showing its age. I'm not meant to be old...this will be a hard break up but i will not go gentle into that good night. fuckers

EDIT: acl and mcl are dunzo....FML

appreciate all the positivity in here tho. ill be in mourning for a couple of days but will see it though and hopefully be slaying again soon...this blows

Watching this made me feel emotional because it’s exactly what I’ve been dealing with for the past six months... except I’m not pro. Watching the clips of him tweaking his knee felt like nails on a chalkboard

a few years back i tore my hamstring completely off the hip. had it surgically reattached, quit life and attacked physical therapy like AVE vs. a sign post circa 2002 – every single day. in six months i was back to 'normal' activities...skating, surfing, biking around. and in nine months, i felt better than ever before. i cannot say how important physical therapy was. the insurance cost a lot – about $300/month but was worth every cent.

and on the note of AVE, he and the whole DC team worked with this dude Paul Chek. might be able to google some of his stuff.

Bro, I have a few broken bones but that’s irrelevant right now, I wish you a speedy recovery and please go to physical therapy after the surgery to build up strength in your knee.

Tore my ACL snowboarding, a few months later finished it off skating in the rain.

The doctor (who also did sports surgery for NFL players) gave me 3 choices,
A- get surgery, and not skate/snowboard for a year.
B- get a brace, and skull do sports, but have the small muscles in my knee atrophy from depending on the brace, and
C- work out on my knee and build up the muscles around it. The knee is only weak when it’s hyper-extended, when it’s bent and muscles are flexed it’s pretty stable.

I went with option 3 for about 6-7 years, then finally decided to get surgery.

The recovery sucked, but it can be lessened by building up muscle beforehand.  I had ligament from my kneecap inserted (the other main way is attaching the hamstring to the back of the knee, but apparently that cuts down on flexibility).

I skate roughly the same as before (shitty), but at the beginning of snowboard season my knee tends to swell up due to the pressures put on it).

Other than that, it’s been fine.

Oh, and free, as I am Canadian.

I’m trying to be every mom’s favorite skater’-&&

Took me 10 months to recover after tearing my ACL. Then, i was forced to skate with a knee brace. Even if i was fully healed, i was too scared to get rid of the brace. 6 months ago, i became more confident and stored the knee splint.

Never skip the physical therapy but don't over exercice.

Yeah it sucks. I def. Hope for the best for others with injuries. Mine was waaaaay bad, formed a blood clot so I couldnt get surgery,  was on bedrest for about a year because if that.

So, I'm sure things would have been alot better if it wasnt for that clot.

It's taken a fuckload of exercise and training just to walk again and I dont fuck with opiates so aside from the first month, I used no opiates.

So I'm kinda the bad end if the spectrum example. My dad ruptured his acl/mcl and hes good to go about 4 months later.

So it's very individualized.  But definitely keep as active as possible and whomever mentioned swimming, do that. Water/swimming is the best therapy for my leg anyhow.

Injuries fuckin suck, regardless. What I'd give to have one normal fuckin day of skating again

Tore my ACL/MCL/Meniscus at the beginning of the month.  Surgery is scheduled for May 8th.

If it doesn't cause you any pain, ride a bike as often as possible before surgery to keep the muscles from atrophying.  I've been riding about 60 miles on the weekends to keep things moving and my knee/walking feels better every day.

I'm also doing some prehab with a physical therapist once a week to keep my mobility up.  He said I'll be back to riding a bike for 20-30 mile rides in 2 months, running in 4, pushing in 6 and regular skating in 9.

Good luck on the recovery.

Downtime is a motherfucker so maintain that PMA and fill it with productivity. This may sound strange but it can be a blessing in disguise. Also, eat healthy and make sure to not become best friends with your couch/bedroom.

Tore my ACL/MCL in my right knee (I'm regular) august last year. I got the surgery by the end of september. I did prehab twice a week before the surgery, i feel like it was more useful mentally, that i could do something that felt like progress. Most people get the patella graft, i got the hamstring. I started physical therapy 2-3 weeks after surgery and did it 3 times a week for 6 months, sometimes went running/biking as my therapist told me. stretching and foam rolling helps a lot with soreness and muscle pain during physical therapy. You'll lose nearly all muscle on your leg after the surgery but don't worry it comes back... I skated flatground for the second time yesterday (a couple days more than 7 months after surgery). It feels amazing to be skating again, and my knee doesn't hurt at all, i feel a bit of pain sometimes in my hamstring but its really not that bad. my pop is pretty much the same as it was before the injury. my balance too. You might get a little more sore after a session so i think its smarter to chill for a day instead of trying to skate several days in a row. I continue doing physical therapy once/twice a week from now on to get it a little more stronger. Dont worry you'll be fine, its not the end of the world and definitely not the end of your skating. Your knee will be the same as it was.
Many people got through it, and came back, Lucas Puig, Giorgi Balkhamishvili , Arto , Jamie Thomas, Ducky Kovacs ,Jeremy Leabres, Kevin Tierney, P Rod recently, and probably many others that didnt post about it on instagram... Sorry if my english is a bit sketchy. Be patient, try to visualize your healthy strong knee. You got this.:)

Got the hamstring acl replacement, has taken awhile to almost get back to where I was at skating. Think it’s been over 2 years now.

Once u get the hinge brace off your knee just work it out as much as possible. Running and squatting seem most effective.

the resistance plastic band workouts/stretches help A ton too.

The best thing that helped me recover after my knee injuries were lifting weights to build up muscle in your legs and glutes. Building that muscle takes pressure off of the ligaments and tendons in your knees and for me at least stopped them from swelling up after every session. Also stretching. Runners stretch, hamstring, and quad stretch before and after every session. Not a doctor but dm me if you have any questions I've gone through a lot of these lol.

I have had 3 reconstructive knee surgeries for ACL tears and meniscus tears from the age of 12 to 18 all from skiing injuries rather than skating unfortunately. But now I'm 22 and skating all the time it feels good as ever, so don't let it put you off man! Follow the rehab and do as much as possible for knee balance and stability and you will come back stronger than before! Best of luck with it mate 😁💪

Zack Kovacs tore his ACl two summers ago and is back at it.
James Gaehner from SD tore His ACL years ago and still throws down all these years later.

They both put in their time for surgery and rehab and came out fine as heck. You got this :)

I tore mine about two years ago and got the hamstring graft. The best advice I got was from someone on here, "Get a bike and fall in love with it". It's one of the best things for rehabbing and helps you get through it mentally too. If you take good care of yourself throughout the whole process, you'll be skating in 7-8 months and a few months after that you'll forget the whole thing ever happened.

Also, does anyone here experience any trauma from your injury? I wake up a lot from dreams where i’m walking or skating and I take a stiff legged step. Depression too, but luckily I’ve found a lot of side hobbies and interests since breaking my hand once a few years back. I still skate transition, I won’t pop up or off anything more than an inch or so high, and I try to not skate while tired. So, lots of no complies and laybacks. I’m still scared to push myself, but any day walking is a blessing
