Chris Roberts as the Most Underrated
« on: August 23, 2019, 04:26:21 AM »
This fellow has to be the most underrated skater of all time, he came from humble beginnings in what surely was impoverished Malibu, Ca, and never knew anyone in the industry from such a young age as he was living out in the boondocks and scavenging for food and, yet, by hook and by krook, and a k-grind he made it to the upper echelon of skateboarding making friends with everyone and an everlasting career.

His parts blow me away, look at this compilation it is on par with insert random grommet trying to get on Powell or SMA circa 1989.

But, actually, the Muska Nine Club conversation side by side with a Nine Clube-style conversation with Chris Roberts would be worlds apart and make for an interesting contrast and comparison.

I like his skating. His time to shine part wasn’t anything to write home about, but I believe he was injured. I really liked his stuff at parallel.

He kinda has a bad push but other than that I enjoy his skating. Definitely not getting gnarly or super tech but he has a clean style.

I love that all the skate sounds are dubbed and you can hear the same exact pop and riding in so many of the clips.
This video is great, I’ve watched it a few times.

He is one of the few dudes that has had same look going for 20+ years with the slightly baggy pants/shirt.

He said before he doesn't care about clothes and I believe him. For the most part it still looks better than a ton of skaters over that same period.

He was underpromoted at the height of his abilities BUT his time to shine part was one of the biggest duds from a skater on a top 5 board company, so it's kinda his fault.

Daniel Policelli was briefly on the Nine Club before and talked about how he edits and dubs the skate sounds in. I love his edits but they must be a nightmare to work on.

His "Time to Shine" part was definitely pretty bland and he openly admits it. He was coming of a achilles injury and only had a few months to film for it. It's a real bummer, I can't imagine being offered to film a part for a Transworld video and then getting injured in the process.

Doing a Transworld video, especially at that time in skateboarding was a huge honor.

off topic but -- I saw his podcast sidekick in venice the other day - roger I believe. he kind of looked like a naked mole rat. he was wearing a nine club hat. he asked my girlfriend if she was 'filming a documentary' (she was using her hpx). she gave him a thumbs up and then he said he liked her style.

he ignored me when I said hey. then he snaked me. i've got a pretty funny clip of it. I don't think he liked me, but in his defense I was probably skating like a kook.

10/10 experience. would totally watch mr. roger try to talk to my girlfriend again.
I started getting a lot better when I went back to college and started taking a lot of math classes when I was 31.

I figured out how to figure things out better, if that makes sense.

Aha thanks, dubbing can get pretty tedious, but finding the clips/figuring out the edit is always fun

Crob is criminally underrated tho at least from how this forum treats him. He might be milking his career because he was never enough of a legend to stay the longevity with his name alone and not having to skate. Like in 10-20 years the Powell Dads of the future will have heath, BA, Thomas boards. They won’t be rocking Crob boards unless this show becomes more what he’s known for, which would be cool still too. At least he contributes to the culture. People shit on the nine club a lot, and I pile on as well, but I like on because I think they could do a lot better. Like look at roger, HE FUCKING WORKS ON HOT ONES. Those interviews are done so much better then nine club fr. Like they could make nine club way more professional if they wanted to. In terms of crobs skating tho he was a top 50 technical skater in the world from like 98-06, so like u know he was a gangster for a decade. He’s like a skateboarding version of Steve Kerr, in the sense he was on the bulls in their heyday, came from money/intelligence(although Steve Kerr did have way more struggles then Crob), and are now known for things other then what they did in their professional “sports” careers. Now Crob ain’t running a championship squad, but he is at least contributing to the culture.

I think Crob is definitely a talented skater. He's also likeable until he starts talking. He always has that "what about me?!" look and vibe to him. Even the look on his face screams that he's got a bug up his ass about one thing or another.

I like Crob, he has a smooth style and was always progressive with his tech skating.  He was definitely a relevant pro during his prime. I’ve always wanted to be able to do those long front noseslide nollie heel to fakie.

Say what you want about the nine club but he is definitely contributing to the culture. A New 2-4 hour episode every week with a different guest, many of them legends, is pretty impressive. I only ever listen on podcast, but it keeps me entertained every week at work.

I think the hate it/he/they get on here is excessive but this is slap and it breeds hate.   It’s just a lame to jump on the hate bandwagon, trolling with a topic that has been brought up numerous times, as it is jump on popular mainstream bandwagon.

crob got pulled into the crail camp in the late 90s when girl was GIRL and new dudes on there were very rare, so I give him props for that. He had that effortless clean style doing tech ledge shit.

granted he eventually got too comfortable and shit went downhill from there.

all in all, I think crob has outlasted the maltos and mikemos and that says something about his willingness to survive in the skate industry.

Remember when they used to merge all the berrics threads because there was so many? I feel like the nine club has taken over that role.

He always seemed to do the most simple risk free tricks, Manny's with shoves in and fakie bigspins out, gross lipslide and front board nollie heel stuff.
