my attention span is that of a 5 year old but when I listen to a band or an artist I have to listen to it in it's entirety chronologically.

This is my theory and it could be disproven with a select few bands here it is. within the first 2-3 albums and the band should either break up or a tragedy happens and they should call it quits.  Too many bands milk it for far too long and become a parody of itself.

Too many bands to list so I'll summarize by genre
metallica
slayer
motley crue
kiss
led zepplin
Motorhead (even typing this out I am ashamed at myself but we all know it is true sadly)
Black Flag
Dead Kennedy's
NofX
Discharge
Blitz
The Exploited

Zep tho?  It does seem like they started to suck live cause page couldn't play very well under the influence but they're studio stuff got better as they went along (and less pretentious) imo.  "Hots on for nowhere"

I’d say this to be mostly true, but there are a few exceptions:

The Rolling Stones are unique in that they got progressively better, and didn’t really taper off until the 80s.  They peaked in the Mick Taylor-era (all 6 albums with him are A+).

As far as the topic... just some bands I would give a limb to have seen live:

80-81 era Bad Brains
Black Flag ‘Damaged’ era
Earliest Jesus and Mary Chain shows
Spacemen 3
Early Cramps
any mind melting weirdo 60s band like the Silver Apples who were so ahead of their time they must’ve caused many bad acid trips on unsuspecting hippies
The motherfucking Stooges

You must not have listened to much NOFX then. Their first couple records are like, almost unlistenable. Meanwhile their fifth LP is by far their most popular and, imo, they peaked musically around their tenth. Even though you picked a handful of pretty entry level rock bands I'd say at least a few of them disprove your theory otherwise, but in general I think the whole "first album" bias that everyone seems to have is so misguided.

Maximum Rock and Roll is fucking terrible, White Trash was where they really came into their own (maybe some glimpses on Ribbed) but yeah Punk in Drublic is their peak for me (many will argue the Decline, I'd say that that they weren't really relevant when that was released but we'll leave that for another discussion) and the genre in general.

Punk In Drublic is obviously great but I still don’t consider it their best. My favorite always switches between So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes and Wolves In Wolves clothing, but either way whenever people dismiss bands with large discographies, it’s usually because of nostalgia. NOFX isn’t the only band on that dude’s list to find wild success in records past their “second or third”, but that’s always the default number people list.

Okay I was just making a list of bands that have had phenomenal success but had less then stellar if not stinker albums that either they milked it too hard to catch lightning in the bottle twice. Yes I agree NOFX definitely didn't find their sound till Punk in Drubic and White trash two Heebs and a bean also So long and thanks for the shoes.

What I meant to say is there is a recipe for either success or doomed from the start, I like to think those that didn't take it too seriously eventually got it together. NOFX definitely on the other hand bands like Slayer/Metallica you guys know there's only so much thrash satanic moody imagery one band can take.

There are a few bands I will mention  that are an exception to this theory and it goes as follows
AJJ
Harley Poe
Darkthrone
Judas Priest
Dio
King Diamond
The Sword
Dystopia they are a good example of when to break up. 3 studio albums and a few 7"s
Brainoil so fucking good
Infest
Sleep
Kyuss
Mastodon
Tool not my type of band but they've got quite a following

as someone who loved nofx as a young teenager, all of their music aside from a few songs do not stand the test of time.  however, I will say that I really do still like their rancid covers.

the only bands that I would do almost anything to see are type o negative, danzig in its original form, sepultura pre roots, and thin lizzy

Sorry I am going to have to disagree with your opinion of NOFX and standing the test of time ( if anything they remind me of my childhood and that time was great for myself ). Their music yes has a lot of goofy bs and some politically charged satire that could be off putting to some however I think they've gotten better and found their unique sound right around I heard they suck live album. Now my opinion is subjective but I hear ya on being turned off by their earlier albums.

Type O played our local skating rink (along with White Zombie and Life Of Agony) back in probably 93ish? Was slightly before my show going days, but that's a pretty unfuckwithable show. Into Another also played the same venue around the same time.
