Zumiez wouldn't be all that bad if they would hire people who actually skate.
[close]

currently working at a zumiez where a large part of my coworkers do skate, which started because they working here. if anything, sometimes it'll influence people to start, which... is a good thing(?)
[close]

The one in the mall where I live is nothing like the one you work at then.
[close]

The Zumiez near me looks like they inherited the Hot Topic employees after they took over that mall location.
[close]

My brother in law's wife is the store manager of a Hot Topic around here now, but she used to manage the Zumiez store at the same mall. She told me that she doesn't recall any of the people working there being actual skaters. They were the types that would carry around a Penny board but have no idea how to ride it.

There were times where someone would come into the store and build a complete board from scratch and want one of the employees to build it for them. There would be not one employee there that knew how to grip a board or assemble one at all. They told the customer that the "board builder" was off that day so they couldn't get it assembled.
I was in disbelief in the end but then I realized I can’t grip a board anymore. I don’t know why but the sheets of grip feel too short now. I always have a small part that isn’t covered and I hate it.

Heard this one first hand, I sometime wonder around the zumiez if I end up at the mall. Dude was buying what had to be a $200 complete, sales associate did a great job at up selling those titanium trucks and swiss. Got to the end and she said the same thing "assembler won't be in until Saturday" it was like Thursday. I tried to tell him to bail and go to the skateshop that was less than a mile away. He said "it's fine I'll just wait" and then the sales associate asked me to leave.

Haha insanity

I would have told the dude to buy a skate tool and meet me in the food court so I could build it for him.

Eventually every brand that wants to survive will be forced to go to Zumiez or other big mall stores if you want to profit and continue growth.  Sad truth is the core shops don't buy enough to have the brand survive.
[close]

More like because everyone sells direct to consumer now - a trend fa/hockey heavily influenced.
[close]
Not DLX...Think of all the $$ they leave on the table by not selling direct on their site(s). Jim for the win(again).

Yeah DLX is holding out, bless their hearts- we will see how long they can survive on skate shop accounts and price point completes in Zumiez and urban outfitters.

They sell FA/Hockey at many Vans stores (even in malls). There was probably a decent amount of Vans money involved in the launch of FA as a board brand.

I know and Ave rides for vans and hella FA/Hockey riders are on vans but its weird to me that people would be pissed about the boards being sold in zummies, but not care that they are sold at Vans stores. Both are big corpo shops at the mall.

Grey area yes, but as brands they should have a duty of care as to which shops they supply, Especially if they are so vocal about particular BIG chain stores. Yes i'm late to the party with this news but that doesn't make it irrelevant, I could not find any threads with this matter being explained. The way i see it and agree with what someone said many posts back is if mall stores have everything it leaves no point of difference for the legit skate shops.

What if they sell to a Aus distro and the distro supplies fast times? It would not make sense for a company of their size to ship to Aus every time a shop needs some wood. They prob ship large orders to a distro a couple times a year and then the distro services the individual shops.

Yeah their aus distro is flipside distribution (carhartt, 917, bianca chandon, stussy etc.) who have their own kinda streetwear shop called supply store. But still, I assume these brands know what shops the distributor is sending their product to. I know Pontus has had to step in to talk to shops in aus directly over the distributor (4128) before.

Are you riding 8.5’s? When I went back down to 8/8.25 I realized “Oh, sheets of grip are usually just big enough for an 8.5 board but not my clumsy margin of error.”
You know I thought these forums were a for skating not discussing fetishes

Grey area yes, but as brands they should have a duty of care as to which shops they supply, Especially if they are so vocal about particular BIG chain stores. Yes i'm late to the party with this news but that doesn't make it irrelevant, I could not find any threads with this matter being explained. The way i see it and agree with what someone said many posts back it is if mall stores have everything it leaves no point of difference for the legit skate shops.

In what way did he step in? 4128 have an interesting approach to the whole selling to bigger shops deal - even though Fast Times gets Polar and Numbers in Melbourne, they don't stock it in Bris because 4128 are owned by Parli and won't let them have the competition. Good shit in my opinion

^^that’s good, keeping top tier brands out of the mall chains is important and can only help the legit skate shops, parliament made a good choice by doing so.

I heard fast times pretended to be interested in buying skatebiz so they could see the figures, only to open around the corner months later. that’s a cunt move, all morals are out the window when you are being directed by zumiez.

I have heard more than once that Zumiez bullies companies into handing over info on accounts so they can plot out their next location. Last one I heard was they threatened to drop Sole Tech unless they gave them sales numbers in certain regions they were looking to open. Basically releasing how much the locals were selling to slide in and undercut

That's fucked up, fuck Fast Times.

I miss Biz, didn't realise just how good it was when it was there.

Hockey and FA pulled all stock from fast times a year or two back after finding out about the zumiez deal. So it is surprising to see that they decided to go back to being stocked in fast times stores again

Was about to say this, I tried to order a FA board a year ago and spoke to Fast times and they don’t stock them, FA and Hockey didn’t want their stuff there, I went in the shop a few months ago and they had them
Back in stock, so I guess this 2016 thread is back relevant, I think it had a lot to do with Jim Britches but he has nothing to do with FA and Hockey now
