Where is the "fingers of flat" measurement taken? Never needed to know this but I'm seeing "fingers" used more and more as a deck measurement.
[close]

It’s some shit from the ‘professor’. Measured from the bolts, to where the rise starts on the tail/nose. Some boards immediately begin rise up after the bolts, other have some space of flat there....theories abound on what works better with which trucks, what causes more pop, vs more control. For me, more flat is just easier, doesn’t tire me out as much, and I’m more consistent. Why? Dunno. Could be 1000% bullshit.
Or not.

People are taking the whole Madness deal to new extremes. With all the wheelbase (trucks extending wheelbases etc)and fingers of flat talk, I think it might be becoming a problem.

I mean usually when I get a new board from a different brand I haven't tried it might take some time to adjust to it, but just end up getting used to it after a few days. Even if I skate like shit those days, eventually it all works out

maybe i'm tripping, but i always thought decks with less "fingers" had kicks that were just steeper, more "fingers" and its just more mellow. the two things seem related to me. one less thing to worry about imo.

for the more sane amongst you in here, like less than 12 setups with 4 different truck brands, how much do you vary spec wise between your setups?

It’s not hard to grasp. The longer the distance the tail starts to rise from your truck axle, the more different of an angle your pop becomes. There’s actually a “flat” amount of space on some decks behind the rear truck bolts that’s measurable before the tail starts to rise. Hence some trucks that extend the wheelbase (venture/thunder) more than Indy/ace will all have a diff feeling depending where the tail *starts*

Ooooh shit. That’s just a rad board.

I have no decks in the on-deck circle. Haven’t been able to decide on shit/shop(s) been real low on product.
Got hella trucks tho, so that’s great.

If anything, the true madness is actually changing size/shape every time.
The most essential thing is to keep the wheelbase consistent, if u have to change size/shape every time.

Hook Ups 8,25
Tensor Mag 5,50
101 F4 Classics 51mm
Girl F.A.F. bearings
MOB grip clear and regular
Diamond 7/8s as if it mattered

Finally able to go skate this thing now, fuck my life and my job :o

Pre-skated-review:

Deck: Concave is medium/mellow with mellow kicks, the print is much much nicer than your usual one(not the design, but the way they print it). Still feel a little weird about the color.

Trucks: The Tensors feel a bit too high(how can a couple mm make such a difference?) but they make it a little lighter(on the scale) though it's not really noticeable in hand compared to thunders, hopefully under my feet it will be. Oh yeah, there was something very unpleasant about setting up the trucks when tightening the nuts for the wheels it made a very cheap sound i've never gotten from trucks. The finishing on the hanger looks and feels very smooth, but the color on the baseplate feels really like it's about to peel off and very cheap. Might be because it's the "Stencil" edition. The bushings feel awful from testing in my kitchen, but hey new trucks!?!
Biggest worry about the new set-up!

Wheels:
Well, Spitfire, no worries here but I have a feeling my next set of wheels will not be from the big 2 companies. I wish I would have picked the 50mm Classics to minimize the 55mm high truck weirdness.

Bearings:
Those Girl F.A.F. bearings seem like a scam from the kitchen test, but maybe they'll get better from skating in. I knew Girl is known for their terrible quality, but I gave those on sale bearings a shot for some reason I can't remember right now...they sound like they'll break after 2 sessions and as if there was already a ltitle dirt inside them.

Grip:
The seethrough mob grip was incredibly easy to handle, I never thought I could like it, but now I actually do surprisingly ;D

Bolts:
Bolts!

Honest, hopefully not too cynical pre tested review, dear lord I hope the real review will be a better :D

Covid got me starting a mini-quiver on accident (sorry about the size):

Mob
$-lave P.Burke (his highness) 8.5
Doomsayers 7/8" allen
Thunder 149 Titanium
OJ Insaneathane 51mm (Universal shape)
Bones Swiss

Mob
Strangelove "Birth of Cthulu" 8.875
Shorty's 7/8" allen
Ace 44
OJ Insaneathane 51mm (Universal shape)
Bronson G2

Mob
Doubles Ltd. "Hungry Ghosts" 9.1, 90s shape
Shorty's Silverados 7/8" allen
Ace 55
Sml Wheels 54mm Coffee Cruisers
Bones Swiss (new set is feeling gummier than my friend's broken in G2s, thus the set on the setup above)

Just switched the Ace 44 to the $-lave cuz they were feeling a touch squatty on the 14.25 wb of the Strangelove (I'm kinda tall tho; 6'1")
[close]
Super interesting shape on that Strangelove, tail looks massive.
[close]

What was your cutting technique on the middle one? I like the way the grip is in about 2 mm all around.

Regarding height, I am 6.1 also and 14.25 is perfect for me because I have a 31” inseam.

Also, the board on the right reminds me of 90-91 ears. Very cool.

I guess I just angled the blade a bit more than usual; I do remember thinking when I was done that it was pretty good too.

I’m 32ish inseam, and these are the 1st Ace I’ve tried which are said to shorten any wheelbase vs. Thunders which stretch the wheelbase on this 14.25” which is shorter than Im used to. I’ll see how it feels soon since I haven’t skated since switching over to the Thunders.

Yeah, early 90s nostalgia on the right for sure.
Turns out it didn’t give me the skate boner I thought it would, but it’s still fun...

Looks dope.
I was looking at these decks, like all of Krooked’s shit really, and I’ve always had better luck with their boards. How’s the shape? Specifically the super dorky ‘fingers of flat’?
I’ve been trying to skate 8.25-8.5s, as they feel nice for actually riding, and are stable with the wider trucks. I then spend the whole session trying to ‘warm up’ by landing some kickflips and 360 flips. Maybe a narrower, yet longer setup would be the magical cure for ol dusty legs. Blah blah

Lots of variety and heat on these last few pages. The strangelove, skate cafe, this setup, and even that tkf (I’ve got a semi irrational hatred for that company) with the venture lo’s all look fucking sick.

Thanks OK. Yeah the shape is great. I guess the fingers of flat are around 1 and 1/2 to the tail and just one to the nose. The pop is sick and doesn't feel heavy for how long the wheelbase is so I actually ending up landing two tricks (B-side 360s and back lips) that I've never really pulled before yesterday. Its got great pop for flip tricks. The only thing I'm struggling with is readjusting to Thunder wheelbite. The worst fall I had last night was wheelbite from pushing to the curb to backlip. It felt like I hit a rock and got pitched. But the setup is a dream come true and I definitely recommend the board shape size for the elder skater.

Ok

I had been riding that Pizza 8" with these Venture 5.2's hollow lights before I set up the GX board (8.125") and then grabbed some 33's to try out since I had never rode Aces before.

F4 53mm 101a Conicals are on the ventures right now, F4 51mm 99a tablets on the Ace, and even with the smaller wheels, the Ace's feel so damn high compared the ventures.

I'm going to switch out wheels on these setups today to see if I feel a noticeable difference having the smaller wheels on the ventures ( I do get pretty bad wheelbite with the 53mm)

I've enjoyed the pizza setup with the aces when doing slappies but not enough that I'd make the switch full time. I had been on Thunder for quite some years before these last two trucks, and I don't think anything is working better than Venture for me.

have a FA 8.18 on the way , been on PS stix wood for the last 5 boards  (had a BBS magenta in there for 2 sessions before the tail broke) so mostly been skating PStix wood. Curious how the FA shapes are on BBS as the only ones I've had were PS before the switch.

I don't think so? They didn't say Hi or Lo anywhere on the truck. they were 5.2 Hollow Lights ...but I did just put them up against a 5.8 and they were significantly lower than those .

Word. Looking at them on the bottom of the board they look like lows, and aces are lower than standard venture hi's (and the same height as lights/hollows).

If you look on the underside of the hanger it'll usually have whatever size it is cast into it (as 5.2L, 5.8H, etc.)

I could be wrong. Conversations in the venture thread are making me fixated on the lows.

Look like lo’s. Which are sick.
Ace 33’s and 5.2 lo’s, both great looking trucks. Dope setups.

I think you can tell venture lows vs highs from the kingpin clearance. On highs theres a good amount, on lows probably little to none

Local shop, Shrunken Head, has some nice Generator decks for $40.
8.5
44s Stock bushing, added 1/8 risers as for some reason I was getting more wheel bite on this deck (maybe due to the concave shape)
55mm Tablets, third deck they've been on and lasting really well
6Ball Swiss.

Not really much to see here but seeing all these smaller boards made me want to make a setup with my old stuff from the late 90s to mess around with and since I got a complete for my niece from skateamerica, I grabbed the least expensive deck to fit these 7.5" wide trucks.

Deck: old quartermaster mini logo 7.88" from skate america for $25. Wheelbase is pretty long with this deck for whatever reason at 14.65"

Trucks : Venture vlight lows (1996ish)

Wheels : Darkstar Master Urethane 49mm

Bearings: the Red Amphetamine ones from TGM for $7 or so

Hardware is randoms pieced together and so is grip.

Forgot that these old ventures do not turn very much and its certainly more flexy than my creature coldpress or bbs 8.5"s Im used to but its a fun lil setup for flipitty shit. Wheels and bearings seem fine and quite good for sub $10 bearings.

Overall solid $30 spent for a "new" old complete.

Skate America actually works?

Yeah. Theyre actually very quick and update daily because I had a deck in my cart but the next day it was marked out of stock. They have a large ebay presence under a different name, Action Villiage. Basicly a shop that does more than skate but seem to get batches of older p2 and impact decks few years back and dwindle made blanks and brands with some AW. Also super cheap cliche decks plus new up to date full price stuff.

I got my niece her first real complete and grabbed this Almost 7.5" r7 deck from there for $25. Shes super psyched on the colors,  pretty stiff still.

Can vouch place is legit

I was just looking at the Krooked catalog and saw that board. I know it's a custom shape but the AWS type blunt nose is the only thing that looked different about it? Is that basically it? I'll probably never even see it in person and I can't quite tell with the doggie in the pic.

I recently set up this Real the day before Go Skate Day and have gotten three solid 2 hour sessions on it so far. Graphic is simple and clean, I love it!
I love DLX wood and this board is great but the shape is a little off for me. Everything feels good except for the shape of the nose and the width. Nose is not full enough like the Full SE's. For an 8.5, it feels like an 8.3-8.4 Some of my flicks just miss and don't give me that lift that I'm used to. I'll adjust and be fine instead of immediately swapping to one of 4 boards waiting to be skated *sweats profusely at board stack* 😬😆

I just got of a MAnderson Deck. The only difference is the blunted tips. Not FA blunted but more so than a regular popsicle. I liked mine.
