Well since we're talking about it, is there a shape difference between bigheads and classics? I never noticed one by looking at them both but I never tried the heads so I could never confirm.

I was recently told they're exactly the same. That being said I've never seen the two side by side.

Oh shit!
I thought the bigheads were fatter, rounder sidewall, whilst maintaining a trim riding surface, the same narrow contact patch as the classics. The bigheads have tread, classics maaaaybe do as well? I loved classics, but would flat spot them instantly, and was always buying every gimmick wheel. Looking back, rather have flat spots. Rode bones for awhile. That hard plastic feel ain’t it, for me. Nothing at all wrong with f4s, but I do like the natural urethane fee of the classics. Or maybe I’m misremembering, and fondly. The sfw I had were the shit, slower, not as easy to slide, but bounced over the crap, while still being a skateboard wheel.
^^ that’s all gibberish. I don’t know what’s what.

I thought so too. IDK. I would love it if someone could say once and for all and post pics. Maybe I'll order some classic 50s in the name of science.

Yeah TKF is great and the guy that owns it just seems to really love skateboarding enough to gamble on owning a small company. Some of the graphics that are just like, a famous jazz album cover or whatever seem a little phoned-in but most of the stuff looks great and that last video they put out was real good as well.

My fuck-around-town/burlier-than-normal/ride-everything setup, dare I'd like to post this in the cruiser thread but the water heads get all crusty about not having wussy enough soft wheels.

Lurkville 8.25
Tensor ATG aluminum 5.75 (8.5" axle)
54mm embrace wheels
Dirty (that's the brand, not an adjective) bearings
CCS grip

This whole setup was basically born of curiosity. The trucks I bought because I wanted to see if they were super light for aluminum trucks (they aren't), the deck was because the graphic was cool and I wanted to explore the mystery wood syndrome uses (this one is clutch but I don't think that's what they normally use), and I got the wheels on ebay from some dude who was selling off a bunch of stock from the Jesus freak companies (siren, embrace etc) for really cheap.

Not planning to enter this one into regular service. The clutch P shape tail is a bit steeper than I prefer, so I'll probably end up moving the trucks and possibly the wheels over to something else once I get a feel for them and have a better idea of what they'll work well with.

Agreed. That guy is super cool. He is very responsive if you message him. He genuinely cares about skateboarding and skateboarders, I doubt he is making much money with this company. The product looks and rides great as well. Buy some stuff from him.

Have you hit them up on IG? They were pretty responsive when I asked them about the V shapes a few weeks ago.

https://rayzlv.wixsite.com/clutchdistribution/copy-of-shapes-1

I don't know why the version they have on their site seems to be missing a lot of shapes they still make (and not just Popsicles), so I use this one which I think is probably older or something but has more info. I do wish they'd specify the default wheelbase they use since it varies by shape. On this P7 it measures around 14.4.

My first session on it didn't go well at all. I don't know if it was the combination of a steeper than usual tail and 55mm truck or the longer wb or what but I just couldn't find the pop timing and everything felt really weird. Gonna try it on some mini logos and see if a lower truck helps.

BBS Blank from Canada Skate Shop (Ben Degros' board shop) - 8.125 x 31.75 x 14.25
Venture 5.6 V-Hollow
Bones Easy Streets V2 53mm
Bones Big Balls
Assorted hardware
Grizzly Griptape

Thought I show some support to Ben Degros and Canada Skate Shop, not my ideal dimensions but I'll adapt rather than whining about a couple in inches here and there. Wish Venture 5.6 came in a Lo but I was getting too much wheelbite on my 5.2 V-Hollow Lo. A little disappointed with the Bones Easy Streets, no flat spots but I'm missing a couple of chunks on 1 of my wheel. Mostly smooth skate parks and no crooked grinds that tear that 1 wheel up.

Testing it out tomorrow at the park with a pair of cast baseplates in my bag just in case.

I’ve noticed that you seem to switch, quickly, from when something doesn’t feel like it’s working for you, instead of trying to adjust. Do you have a baseline, ‘this works’ kind of setup?

Well I snapped my last deck after 2 sessions. Before that I tried an 8.25 deck and 5.8 Ventures which felt way bigger than I could handle. Prior to that I rode the same deck for around 4 months (before and during lockdown), only swapping out trucks because I was bored.
I've had 1 setup in recent memory that ticked all the boxes, issue is that the board company (Folklore) is based in Australia ($75 USD before shipping) with irregular dimensions (8 x 32 x 14) plus it had a sheet of carbon fiber. The plan was to load up on a stack whenever I would travel to Australia for work, probably 2-3 times a year. But the pandemic has put a damper on that plan.
Last 2 sessions were my first time on skating in 2 months, I personally hate swapping gear because it waste time, but had the luxury of time during lockdown to obsess about gear.

Makes sense. I ask, as I swap stuff fairly regularly as well, which makes consistency difficult. I also circle round to things I previously tried and dismissed, and end up enjoying the same shit, but at a different time. Too much time in between sessions, not enough time skating, too much time on the slap, huge contributors to setup dissatisfaction, for me.

I feel you, parks are only just opening up here and the only spots I have near me are pretty rough. Flat ground and some ledge stalls with shit-tier flooring. I've found the upper limit of board sizes (8.125, 8.25 if I'm feeling daring) and wheelbase, coupled with either Thunder or Ventures only. I started selling off a bunch of gear I accumulated to reduce the analysis paralysis. Woodshop wise we got way fewer options here in Asia, blanks are cheaper but are pressed in China with suspect quality.
It also helps that I have a very limited bag of tricks, so I immediately know when something feels off.
