Despite feeling like the 8.38 DLX with 5.8 Ventures was perfect, I felt inspired to try 8.75” trucks after seeing sbr’s setup on the last page

8.38 Anti Hero (IV on the press I think)
Indy 159 Ti
52mm conical full
Quantum TJ Rogers model (forgot what they’re called.. metallics?)
This felt super nice and I’ll probably keep the Indys on here for awhile at least. Rain stopped so I went to a chunky ledge down the block from my house and had a great session on it. I’m kinda convinced I could skate any trucks on this deck.
My mind is blown by that recent trend of 8.38 / 8.75 combos. Do you flip your board?
At this point, not often since I have ankle issues. My flat ground game is atrocious to begin with, but I can still heelflip this thing
My main concern is how good my setup feels for curbs/ledges.
Incredible. I can see it work a treat on curbs n ledges tho.
I think there are a fair number of people who ride 159s (or equivalent size in other brands) on 8.5" boards, certainly quite a few I know, even though I tried it and found it was just too wide for what I was used to.
The funny thing is the DLX 8.38 is only a single mm less than the usual 8.5" wide board, so it stands to reason that people would also ride it in the same way they would ride an 8.5 deck.
My usual 8.38 with 149s and three washers, sometimes even four thin ones, and fairly normal sized / medium width wheels is only ever so slightly less overall than when I put 159s with only one washer on the inside, so I guess I am making mine more into 153s or something anyway.
The width of the truck definitely makes everything way more stable, with minimal wheel exposure / hot rod, especially with smaller wheels, which will sit just a little over in the same way that 149s used to sit over 8.25 boards back when there were no 144s / 8.25 wide trucks, just the nuts sticking out.
For those who prefer a magic carpet, this kind of setup (or even mine for that matter) really does feel and look weird, as others I know ride the same 8.38 board on 144s but that is their choice and option, which again feels too narrow under my feet when turning, grinding, etc but they find it sits better on rails, ledges and flips more easily.
It is interesting to try out the different setup options if you already have the parts, but not something I would recommend everyone delve into when trying out board options and say just stick with the same width truck as deck usually.
