Despite feeling like the 8.38 DLX with 5.8 Ventures was perfect, I felt inspired to try 8.75” trucks after seeing sbr’s setup on the last page

8.38 Anti Hero (IV on the press I think)
Indy 159 Ti
52mm conical full
Quantum TJ Rogers model (forgot what they’re called.. metallics?)

This felt super nice and I’ll probably keep the Indys on here for awhile at least. Rain stopped so I went to a chunky ledge down the block from my house and had a great session on it. I’m kinda convinced I could skate any trucks on this deck.

My mind is blown by that recent trend of 8.38 / 8.75 combos. Do you flip your board?

At this point, not often since I have ankle issues. My flat ground game is atrocious to begin with, but I can still heelflip this thing  :)

My main concern is how good my setup feels for curbs/ledges.

I think there are a fair number of people who ride 159s (or equivalent size in other brands) on 8.5" boards, certainly quite a few I know, even though I tried it and found it was just too wide for what I was used to.

The funny thing is the DLX 8.38 is only a single mm less than the usual 8.5" wide board, so it stands to reason that people would also ride it in the same way they would ride an 8.5 deck.

My usual 8.38 with 149s and three washers, sometimes even four thin ones, and fairly normal sized / medium width wheels is only ever so slightly less overall than when I put 159s with only one washer on the inside, so I guess I am making mine more into 153s or something anyway.

The width of the truck definitely makes everything way more stable, with minimal wheel exposure / hot rod, especially with smaller wheels, which will sit just a little over in the same way that 149s used to sit over 8.25 boards back when there were no 144s / 8.25 wide trucks, just the nuts sticking out.

For those who prefer a magic carpet, this kind of setup (or even mine for that matter) really does feel and look weird, as others I know ride the same 8.38 board on 144s but that is their choice and option, which again feels too narrow under my feet when turning, grinding, etc but they find it sits better on rails, ledges and flips more easily.

It is interesting to try out the different setup options if you already have the parts, but not something I would recommend everyone delve into when trying out board options and say just stick with the same width truck as deck usually.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

I hardly ever flip my board, but I find the "size up" method helps a bunch with stability at speed on transition since you lessen the topple factor (you can dig in on your heel or toe edge while carving and it does not want to pressure flip on its own). I also find that my grind lock-in, especially on smiths, feels way better when you run a hanger width that's a little wider than a perfect fit. I've set boards up like this for so long that seeing a board set up with the proper-sized trucks visually looks way off to me. That being said, on the opposite end of the spectrum, it'd drive me nuts if I saw someone skating an 8.5" with 161's... Admittedly, I'm a total head case and wish I was blissfully unaware of this crap and could go back to enjoying skateboards sans madness lol

Also the 8.38 is only 1mm narrower than the 8.5 because neither are the advertised width.

Nice setup , In the early 90’s everybody left grip off the end of the nose when Ollie one foots were popular.

It definitely does. I have terrible foot eye coordination as well, so seeing a tiny bit of wheel stick out helps for certain tricks.

Spitfire 55mm radials
freshly cleaned and lubed qbs fusions

The true fit deck was amazing; I could 360 flip like a younger version of myself. I decided to swap to bigger wheels because the 54's I set up a couple of months ago are hovering around 50mm right now, and I'm going on a skate trip in a couple of days. I had to retire my Thunder titaniums a bit prematurely because the axles were bent on both trucks, but I was able to skate them for around 11 months. Swapped the bushings over to the new trucks

Love that nerd shit

I had a bbs 8.28, doomsayers early on, maybe 2016/17. I still think about that deck. Was decently short, maybe a 14” wb dunno.
Not sure if this is the same shape or nah.

This thing rips... I've been on the fence for years about trying this shape because I have an OCD thing about seeing the axle nuts past the rail of the board, however, I had two really bad sessions over the weekend and stole my friend's setup for a few runs and fell in love with it. I have nerve damage that caused partial numbness in my legs/feet and the extra room for my front foot to move around and not lose the board mid trick is a godsend.

Egg shapes are fun, but turns out it's not the shape for me personally.

Grimple Stix Jeff Grosso "Nooner Shape" 9" x 31.8" with 14.25" wheelbase (scaled down version of Grosso's original 9.25" AH shape with rounded top rails)
Independent Pedro Delfino 159 Hollows with 92a Indy bushings
Powell Peralta Dragons 56mm 83a
Bones Super Red Ceramics
Indy 1" hardware
Santa Cruz Slimeline Rails
MOB

Skates really great so far on curbs/flat. If it rocks on transition, this maybe the shape I stick to for the foreseeable future as long as Antihero keeps making it.

When you guys set up a new deck, do you remove the little warning sticker on top, or do you griptape right over it? I always take it off because the thought of it being under my griptape bothers me for some reason.

I stopped caring and don't remove the sticker anymore. Saves time, grip adhesive isn't affected, and I don't see the outline of the sticker.

I take it off. With some grip, the sticker outline sort of shows which is a mile annoyance when I see it.

New one next to the Lance board I retired to set it up. I skated that Lance board off and on for over 5+ years, so it was getting a bit dilapidated. My foot is still recovering from a break so I can’t skate it, just doodling on the grip for now.

I really love it, kicks are more pointy than most modern popsicles but I 💗 that and it just feels so comfortable! It’s my 3rd limo deck now, can’t fault them.
