electric guitars are like furniture to me, in the sense that expensive furniture made from rare stuff does the same job that cheap furniture does. the reasons to pay a higher price usually have nothing to do with functionality. you pay for craftsmanship, longevity, etc. specs for electrics are pretty transparent. everyone can decide for themselves if they are willing shell off a couple hundred more for the same spec guitar, just made with a more exotic wood that might make the guitar sound better. or worse. you just don't know. to me it's esoterics, but i understand where it comes from. i am sure the wood has an influence, but unless the guitar is literally rotting away and you are very familiar with the setup, or have the opportunity to actually listen side by side, i think it would be hard to tell woods apart. i think people choose tonewood from a "might as well" perspective. tone wood guitars usually cost a premium, i think people set themselves up for buying an expensive guitar first, and then why not buy the one with the nice wood that promises you mojo. that dentist who decided now it's time for a les paul doesn't really care about the wood probably, but it's an easy sell to guys like these to tell them about tonewood and stuff so they have a cool story to tell about that 4.5k guitar they can barely play.

i personally don't care at all about the wood in terms of tone. i'd care more about the guitar being lighter/having a better balance or the wood not being some super exotic, endangered type stuff. honestly would rather want to buy a guitar made out of common woods. actually, the holy grail for me would be a full aluminum whip.

lastly, qc plays a huge role in the pricing of more expensive guitars. they just do everything under less time pressure and more thoroughly, or at least they are supposed to. a couple hundred extra pay for a bunch of workers inspecting and maybe fixing up that guitar for a day, in comparison to a cheaper model which gets a superficial 5 minute check. granted, this can also go wrong, and gibson has become infamous for bad qc in the last few years.

a good sounding guitar sounds good. that should be all.

Any time someone disparages a Squier or other cheap electric solidbody guitars, I think about this video (which apparently made the owner of PRS absolutely furious).

that guys channel is amazing. every guitarist can learn something from his videos.

found a solid $10 a month subscription based amp simulator - it's called STL Ignite AmpHub. comes with a ton of presets, amps and pedals. great product for the price.

Ditch the subscription, and just get their Emissary and IR loader for later use.

Get Neural Amp Modeler, it’s free. It’s a learning software, where other users profile their high end amps.
Alway been a real amp kinda guy, but this stuff is clearly taking off. Don’t misunderstand me, I much prefer 200lbs of fire breathing Marshall JVM, but if your living situation doesn’t allow turning up, why bother.

Have you sorted out your buzzing?

I play a very similar model Jackson with a Floyd Rose trem system and I love it way more than I initially thought. My only nitpick is that the stock Jackson pickups are really hot.

Has anyone tried this pickup?

Or perhaps a DiMarzio pg 13?

I chose a sticker for my fiddle. It wasn't my first choice but I couldn't find a good photo sticker of Lil Wayne. Also no one liked that idea.

It's ok...
I guess they don't understand that Lil Wayne is the goat of modern hip-hop. He and Wu Tang are my shit. I feel it would have been way cooler than the Crass logo. Everyone knows that Crass is my #1. Not everyone knows I love Wayne

Also everyone should know everyone of these JRs needs a pickup shim.

I got one too. More of a fender guy but I had a 2007 white Gibson melody maker that just felt too lightweight. The body was thin and when played aggressively seemed to warp the sound since it wasn’t sturdy. Sold that off. Got a low quality epiphone les Paul jr and it was fun but janky as a freebie. Thought I would upgrade to a proper one since I had fun with the free les Paul jr. Plus Johnny thunders is an inspiration along with Pete Shelley of buzzcocks played one later in his career. Don’t care for Green Day’s music and the crass sticker is a sick choice. Punk af.

Hell yeah.

I just did a record with this on lead. I used a 94 Gibson one off. It basically is the 93 classic premium Plus top but the silk screen and binding are different.
Abr1 500t.

We played though a 70s Marshal and a triple rec with the Gibson.

I used a bass man and a peddle with the jr.

So fun

recently discovered Tory Slusher. she's insanely talented and does some crazy jazz fusion tapping, but without it being overly gimmicky. her right hand finger picking technique is next level. her YouTube channel is worth checking out. absolute shredder and seems like a pretty cool chick.

Recently just started playing in a band again. I’ve always considered myself a guitarist but the band needed a bassist so I’m currently on bass duties, which is cool because bass can be just as fun. We’ve already played a couple shows and I’ve been borrowing a friends bass to use for the shows but I recently just picked up a black and white Squier P-Bass from the pawn shop in good condition listed for half off what it would be new. Was stoked to find a good condition bass for that cheap of a price.

Same here- I play mostly finger style guitar, but am now playing bass in a loud rock band. I was nervous at first, but really love it now. Its definitely improved my guitar playing as well, just being more adventurous up on the neck than I have been before.

Bass is the greatest stringed instrument. You control the the subconscious rhythm and melody.

I'm a mediocre guitarist today but I'm one of the best bassist in the history of humans. I switched to guitar for more clout.

Bassist get no love from the general public unless they sing too. It's going to get worse as people have been moving away from bass tones.

I read a study that humans are more attracted towards treble tones these days. That would explain trap and other crappie crap.

A 5 stroke roll on the high hat. Goo goo kitchooo bitch

What's a good practice amp?

When I bought my guitar the shop gave me an Orange Mini Crush for free and while it's a cool little amp (on clean, any distorted tone sounds like a fart) and it has a tuner built in, it kinda sucks.

I'm looking at the Orange Crush 20RT.

I suck, so I mostly play stuff like Nirvana and other bullshit that all beginner guitar players play. I'd love to learn to play poppy stuff like The Smiths, but I think that's probably years down the road for me, haha. I'd honestly love to get a little tube amp, but it seems the decent ones are more money than I want to spend, and I honestly don't think I'm good enough to know the difference.

Orange tiny terror, either model is less than 150, loud, has a single tube and can run clean or high gain. You’re not gonna get much from a single EQ knob, but it definitely sounds good. Running a new pedal to it solves that though. Has an effects loop too.

I have a tiny dark terror and paired it with a 2x12 cab. I like it.

I'm a big supporter of carvin amps.

If I had bread I'd buy that new amp in a peddle combo.

Probably not tho. I'd actually buy that Pia amp that Steve Vai uses.

When I practice now I use a fender mini champ.
I've recorded a bunch with it.

It's hard to beat a fender.
My best practice amp ever was my peavey bandit 212

my brother picked up this beautiful vox v90 off reverb for $500 - almost a full $1000 off its MSRP. although it does need to be setup, it feels great right out of the box. by far the nicest guitar either he or I have owned. equipped with double p90s (my favorite pick up config,) has a nice weight to it for a semi hollow, and the abalone inlays and headstock are a really nice touch... however...

there is a feedback/ buzz when there's no pressure on the strings, and it seems to be coming from the neck pick up. on the bridge, with the tone and volume knobs adjusted, and with the settings on the amp set with the gain down, it was very minimal/ non existent, but on the bridge pick up, despite where the knobs are set, there is some buzzing. even though I can get rid of the buzz on the bridge pick up, there shouldn't be any issues like this with a guitar right out of the box. it arrived today and he noticed the problem right away. also, one of the volume knobs is not flush with the others and is slightly off-kilter.

is this feedback/ buzz because of how the coil is wound, or because the pick up is too hot? I don't have any experience installing or fixing pick up issues, and I don't have a whole lot of knowledge in the electronics/ wiring of a guitar. its a bummer because this is a REALLY nice guitar. he said he was going to reach out to Reverb, and apparently they will direct you to a local guitar shop and even pay for the repair if needed.

any info would be appreciated!

Is the noise only when you are NOT touching the strings? It gets mostly better when you are?

That would be completely normal for a high output single coil.

Yes, that is exactly what's going on. I had a p90 pickup on a gretsch a few years ago and I never had this issue, at least. I don't recall it ever being that bad.

Thanks for the info!

glad to see the bass get some love here!
started straight on bass at 14 cause I thought it would be easier than guitar and I wanted to play in a punk band quick haha....over 30 years later I'm still at it and do not regret my choice of instrument at all. These days I do double duty as lead singer in my current band, it's challenging but real fun.
Here are my babies, Geddy Lee Jazz Bass made in japan. And Sterling Musicman, US made (not to be confused with the Sterling range, that's the Sterling model). I bought that one second-hand around 10 years ago and it's so versatile.....you can play anything with it and the sound is beastly.

This is a killer pickup swap. I might do a second pickup. Sick on Gold foil.
