Scoop up some beauty G&L's on the used market and you got a Fender and more. Regardless of model S or T. Headstock be damned. Even the Indonesian tribute models are quite well made.

Why does everyone at Long and McQuade seem like they hate their lives? Anyways I just grabbed a long overdue MXR EQ from a cashier that I’m not sure would give me the time of day if I asked

Probably because of patrons like yourself. You got your product, what did you want, a song and dance?
With that said, enjoy your MXR. Wear sunglasses.

Questions about the product? That’s how it works right? I don’t need much but god forbid I have questions. I had to confirm details on Reddit before purchase. I don’t know what you mean by wear sunglasses but the brighter the better for where I play

You didn't really include that in your original post. Just seemed like you were passing judgement on a clearly underappreciated retail worker.

It is disproportionately bright in low light situations. I ended up changing the lights on mine.

I just got one of these this afternoon as a treat 'cause i had a shitty week and have been working a lot;

I've been in love with headless bass forever, i guess just growing up watching 80s video clips. It's pretty much a purely aesthetic purchase. From what I understand, Riverhead was a Japanese company, well, still is but now they manufacture in the Philippines, but I believe this is made in Japan in the early/mid 80s (the Japanese factory burnt down back in the day and fucked their shit up for a while I think)

It's obviously super light from the lack of body and head, it plays nice too - it's a bit of a trip just having so much neck - it kind of feels like the 3rd fret is the 1st fret (as in, it feels like a stretch to get to the 1st fret and i have found myself a whole step/tone up from where i should be a few times now while just fucking about)

Anyone else got any headless shit or Riverhead knowledge/experience?
[close]

yea i got a headless ibanez ehb bass, i really like it but it took a minute to adjust to at first, albeit in the opposite direction, it felt a bit like a short cale. it all depends on where the front strap button is. a typical bass generally has it more or less even with the 12th or 13 fret. the higher the fret the strap button is aligned with the further the nut will be from you. on your bass it obviously can't be aligned at 12 given the body shape. here's a thread on talkbass with people who have the same issue as you.

https://www.talkbass.com/threads/headless-bass-handmade-strap-hook-for-steinberger-spirit-hohner-b2-etc.1304234/
I know this was a long time ago, but thank you @ungzilla for this suggestion. Amongst the strap hook adjustments on those forums someone suggested just moving the back strap button to kind of the middle(ish) of the back of the bass and it levels out to a pretty standard feeling. I finally did that yesterday with some Schaller style strap locks and it's sorted.

I'd only been playing into the computer since I got it because I've kind of been resenting the band I've been playing in the last 6 months. I played with them the other week through my Ampeg SVT-3 Pro and it's fucking HUGE! It sounds so good. Has certainly proven itself beyond its aesthetics.

I had a g&L it was the best guitar I ever had. I’m pretty sure mine was like a custom shop cause I got it in like 93 at an antique store in Marblehead the head like bursts and shit. It was the best guitar I ever had and for some reason I did not like the burgundy mist paint job so I gave it to My Friend and we were going to refinish it, but unfortunately, we never got to do it and it was stolen.

I’d do I do just about anything to get that Guitar back? I do even more to have my best friend still

Retail isn’t that difficult. I also worked at a music store when I was in college. Do you have an older model? I mean I agree that if you’re a bedroom player it might be overkill but I have a decent loop switcher so it’s perfect for my needs.

You seem thoughtful.
Received mine to review around 2018? It is an updated model. I use it as a clean boost on my live board so it was getting stepped on a lot. Lights had to go. Glad you like yours.

Been nerding out on gear videos lately, guitars, amps, pedals.. watched one with Kevin Shields of MBV where he talks about having 15 Jazzmasters all tuned differently for specific songs.  Love that kinda stuff.

I’m just a casual so haven’t gotten into pedals or fancy gear myself.. but I did just get a Lekato Looper pedal from Amazon and it’s been super fun to mess around with.  Easiest way to experiment with laying down rhythm, lead and bass tracks that sound good over each other.

I think all the American made G&L's are kinda custom shop since you can get them built to any spec and finish they offer.

I'll post a pic of my modest gear one day. Just started playing again. Made a little chord progression loop on my flashback delay pedal and played some melodic solo nonsense over it. Was fun. I should get a proper looping pedal.

That finish is incredible yo. Excellent score.

Check this shit out. This is more or less my dream platform. Unfortunately Gibson is going directly to consumer with these so I’ll never ever see one.

This is the channel that turnt me on to the Billy Joe Armstrong jr.

He did a jr shoot out and it was sick. Rn I’m trying to sell off a few of  my lp standards so I can get a second one for a back up. It really is the best guitar I’ve ever owned. Not counting my g&l my mine bought me in 93 from the antique shop. That thing was on par with a fender custom shop.

I hate the Gibson exclusives because I’ve been fiending for a Les Paul Double Cut Special for a while. A year from now, I may cave in and get the Synchrony card for Gibson, if my only retail options are still between an Epiphone or Gibson Custom Shop.

That SG is nice. I love the SG Special but love the full batwing pick guard instead of the half. Not having a vibrola gets rid of any tuning problem people usually complain about.

I’m on the fence about adding this to my pedal board:

Most of the time, I just play directly into the amp, so maybe I need to stop looking at gear.

That LP Special is pretty cool. Reminds me of what Bill Steer of Carcass plays but that's a heavily modified Melody Maker. Manufacturer exclusives seem to be popping right now. I was sweating an Advanced Stratocaster until I realized it was a GC/MF exclusive.

My girl got me a guitar cos I said I wanted one. I also said I wanted to be a butcher, ride a horse instead of a car, eat only eggs, and a bunch of other dumb shit.

Now I gotta learn guitar. Anyone got any good YouTube videos I can start with.

When I was 13 I could play seven nation army on one string.

Now I’m mid 30’s and all I know are excel shortcuts and slappy grinds.

Welcome to the club!
I’m in a similar boat and started last year in my mid 40’s, and feel like I’ve progressed pretty quickly by kind of looking at making music with a skate mindset and learning tricks and working on video projects with specific goals in mind but also just enjoying the process and failures.

My wife started on the synths around the same time and we’ve been learning together and have a full album’s worth of original songs we’ve made together that we’ll hopefully start properly recording soon.

Did you get an acoustic or electric?  Electric is definitely easier to make some cool sounds and more of the style of music I want to make, but I feel like starting on acoustic gives a better foundation and helped me progress on electric quicker.

JustinGuitar is a great YouTube resource for sure.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBNkm8o5LiEVLxO8w0p2sfQ

My advice is to kind of pick and choose things that appeal to you, and then find your own lane where you want to take things.  Get as strong foundation as you can then you’ll have a better idea what kind of music you want to make.  Even though you’re an “older” beginner, you have more years of listening inspiration to pull from. Just like skating there’s no finish line, so just enjoy the process.

Get familiar with reading tablature to learn specific songs, but also take the time to just fuck around and play simple things that put a smile on your face like Seven Nation Army.  Shit doesn’t have to be super tech to sound cool.

And try to carve out a little time every day to play even if it’s only for like 15-30 minutes, things will get easier and dots will connect with consistency.

I also have no interest in being a technical shredder, and just want to play cool melodies, riffs, and chord progressions so take that for what it’s worth.

I learned by ear. I just thought about my favorite songs and went for it. After about a year I got a partner in music to learn with. We started jamming out every weekend. Every time we learned something on our own we shared that with the other.
It took us over a year to get good enough to play other people’s songs but we developed our own thing.

Now that I know shit I would recommend the caged system so you aren’t stuck in bar chord land for too long. And it’ll prevent you from developing the bad habits that I have.

I personally feel that the most important thing I’ve learned in this is to tune by ear.
I have near perfect pitch now.
I probably should learn the names of notes across the fretboard so I could actually show people that I am without an instrument in my hand.

Major and minor pentatonic is a good thing to practice. It’s like the Swiss Army knife style of jamming with strangers.

What style are you interested in? That kinda matters on what to learn.
