AO and eS is the perfect fit in that I grew up a big fan of both but now find them absolutely insufferable.

He’d never fucking skate an es shoe. They’re too garish for him. The man dipped to vans as quick as he could after fully flared and his pro sample was a dress shoe just like Austyn and Dylan. Which is somewhat ironic cause Austyn was gonna be on es or was on es right before the collapse and habitat shoes. But still.

he's talked about it in interviews before. said he had some ideas/designs for some shoes but essentially they told him "shut the fuck up and take this Vans Chukka with your name on it"

Never heard this, any pics?

What were you working on with Alex Olson before he left?

I liked that dude and working on stuff with him because he was bringing up pretty different ideas.  Back then was when the Dylan Reider shoe was initially ridiculed for how risky it was, but ended up doing well in skate shops.  So, Alex was kinda in that same zone where he wanted something different.  We had initially tried to get him to push a shoe called the Versa.  He was also pretty enamored with soccer shoes. So, we met up with him in L.A. and we bought up a bunch of soccer shoes for him to wear test.  We tried to then design these indoor soccer inspired shoes, but it would always get to the point where he wasn’t satisfied with what we were creating.  So, we’d get various shoes to the production stage and get a pair in his hands and he’d be like, “These things are disgusting.”  There was a pair he hated so much that he wrote all over them.  So we scrapped it.  Then he was skating in these OTW shoes called the Prichard, which was a cupsole dress looking shoe with a thin rubber cup sole.  They had a little notch in the sole that made them look like a heel, but they were flat.  So, we tried to develop more of an oxford shoe for him to skate in.  Once again, we’d get them to production and then he’d pull away again.  It was always fun to design with Alex, but we just never came up with something that worked for him.  It was sad to see him go because I liked watching that guy skate.

It’s funny that anyone would want to make an indoor soccer-style skate show when the Samba already exists.

I understand the sentiment, but I like how the Busenitz Indoor feels on foot and how it skates/grips more than the Samba and/or Samba ADV and/or the new retooled skate Samba .   I also like that Copa National skate shoe more than the Samba.

The AVE 3 was the closest Vans got to a soccer shoe and skated amazing (felt like the skate Gazelle).

Yeah thank God Adidas and Nike started making skate shoes so brand conscious cucks like you two could have something to skate in.

Y'all are tripping on sole tech, the Accels slims are great, the Swift's are great, and the Quattros are too from my experiences. Emerica's KSL and the Etnies Marana are also tanks of skate shoes.

Over the last couple years I've noticed that more and more people I meet out skating and at parks are skating Es and Emerica's. Not nearly as many Nike's as a couple years ago.

Good point and actually the AVE is my favorite skate shoe maybe of all time. I don’t think I’ve ever owned one particular model of shoe as much as I’ve owned those.

Dude. I know people were wonky with the OTW line, but the Prichard was one pair I liked in particular. I swooped up a couple of pairs for casual dress wear.

If Vans dropped them again in some leather versions, I'd most def pick up a couple of pairs.

I do appreciate him calling out Dill/FA, skateboarding needs more people taking shots at and checking each other.
From what I gathered at the time, AO was salty that they were stealing all their riders? I don't think AO can cry about that when he actively ignored his riders' requests for graphics, sends them the wrong boards (according to Cyrus), doesn't film for or show up to the premiere of his own video. If you can't offer the same amount of money as FA, you better work hard to create a pride of representing the company. He didn't do that and deserved to have his riders dip.

Like the ones from 2004? I liked them. And the Angus models. HAHA.

Maybe I liked the fact that they sat on shelves and outlets and I got skate shoes for dirt cheap.

lol my other favorite is the Nike SB FC Standard. I snatch them up on eBay and Depop whenever they're cheap enough and haven't been skated in.

They've made them more recently than that. I bought them at Nordstrom Rack a few years ago, but yeah, I definitely got turned onto the shoe because they were $45 on closeout.

Had an initial pair of all black suede and black sole Copa nationale and skated truly amazing
Though I finally had found a model, besides busenitz pro, that made me felt protected and skated good
Ended up buying 3 more pairs; all white leather, all black leather and blue suede, but none of them skated the same as the first pair: whites had some weird sizing and all of them felt WAY less grippier than the all black suede. I've tried skating them in between other shoes but I'm giving up already. They found their comfy place in the closet with all the other shoes half skated that I never use.

Still messes my mind cause I'm used to buy busenitz regularly and almost every pair feels the same no matter the material or color (well maybe gum sole are more grippy but harder to find)

Weird, that's pretty much what happened to me. I had a pair of the Mike Arnold copa nationales and they were pretty much perfect, so I bought a pair of the white/gum copas because I thought I'd have the same experience. But the white ones skated really badly and I ended up reselling them after one session.

I got the Mike Arnold's off depop for a steal and after wearing them one day, not skating, 3 or 4 of the little lace holders ripped off the shoe. I tried fixing em but to no avail. Now they just sit on my shoe shelf all sad.

How does AO get by just being an unsuccessful artist? I wouldn't think Steve Olsen would have a bunch of cash but are they just a rich family?

I’ve wondered the same thing. I remember he has talked about growing up in a one-bedroom apartment with his mom, and we know that Steve doesn’t have two nickels to rub together. My guess is that those golden-age Nike checks were substantial, and he either invested well or squirreled it all away.

I think Alex did pretty well. Sponsored for half his life, a large chunk of which was from Nike. Was getting quicksilver Cheques for awhile. Runs 917 and Bianca which seem to do well. Even with the team leaving 917 they still appear to be stocked by shops.  Both heavy on softgoods which have large margins and I don’t think either we’re large operations so he probably wasn’t paying to many people.  He’s also done modeling which pays well and I’m fairly certain he was a fashion photographer for awhile too which can be lucrative. And he DJs. No idea if he gets paid but I’d assume by name alone he could make a few bucks from that.

failed artist ? Making the art is what make  you an artist. Does not matter if your showing it at the Louvre or if no one ever saw/read/listened to your thing. It’s like skating, some people do it for the love and thrill of it.

Also he is a brand owner and had some nike checks. Obvisoisly that’s how he manages to pay the rent

Maybe the entire time he was getting stuff from Nike and supreme he was hoarding and reselling. Know someone who's been doing that since like 06 plus working and they live mad comfy (and their job no way pays as well as professional skateboarder did)
