Weird Mark Appleyard / Geoff Rowley / Active Email
« on: April 24, 2007, 01:22:34 PM »
We just got a super weird email from "Mark Appleyard" saying...

"I quit Active today due to some disagreements, and I no longer feel I can support them
as an endorsed rider. I hope they will move forward and support skateboarding in a
positive and fair way for the good of everyone, and in this I wish them the best of luck."

It looks like your typical bulk email coming from Blitz or someone, but it just says "From: Mark Appleyard", "Subject: Goodbye Active". It doesn't specifically say it was sent via Blitz or anything like that.

Anyone know what the deal is? Such as, why would someone send this to a bunch of shops? It's interesting, we just don't generally get email saying some pro is leaving a shop sponsor!  ???

What's Active doing (besides the usual) to bum out Appleyard? I didn't even know he rode for them, to be honest!

I looked at the raw source and it doesn't look like there's anything funky. It comes from "xmr3.com", which is some sort of bulk emailing house.

It seems like it was sent prematurely, if anything. There's no images, just the text I posted above, in white, on an all black background. Very weird!

from geoff rowley:

As of immediately, I am no longer able to endorse Active mail order as

a team rider. Differences of opinion and direction have been a problem

for quite some time and I am quitting for my own ethical reasons. I

will be concentrating my focus on my main sponsors, and working with

them to support the bigger picture of skateboarding as a whole.

I don't think these guys would send out an email to us typical joes...prolly some prankster fucking with us, and... how did they get my personal email address?

hopefully this will inspire the Gonz to leave CCS.....i mean, i know people think he cant do no wrong, but sponsored by CCS?

Oh god no!  This can't be true.  Apples, Rowley, Arto, and Penny all quitting active?!  :'(  This ruined my whole month, maybe year.  I just don't think I can live in a world when they don't ride for active.

I've been saying the same thing for a couple of years. Each of these great skaters are lucky to have any of their product sold by core shops:
http://www.ccs.com/ccsteam/
Many of them have been inspirations to me and the way they have sold out makes me sick. I would respect them a lot more if they were sponsored by Mountain Dew or Right Guard since those companies don't undermine the backbone of our community or shunt money away from its greatest contributors.

Funny thing is I received both emails (Appleyard and Rowley) within minutes of each other. It's most likely spam, but I sure hope it's not. Wactive is just that.

I've heard rumors that Nike is in the works of buying Active.  Wonder if this has anything to do with it.

Apparently Active started a strict No Public Dook policy, and many riders were like, "Fuck that shit."

We were e-mailed some interesting information from Geoff Rowley and Mark Appleyard today. Straight from the horses' mouths...

Mark Appleyard:
"I quit Active today due to some disagreements, and I no longer feel I can support them as an endorsed rider. I hope they will move forward and support skateboarding in a positive and fair way for the good of everyone, and in this I wish them the best of luck."

Geoff Rowley:
"As of immediately, I am no longer able to endorse Active mail order as a team rider. Differences of opinion and direction have been a problem for quite some time and I am quitting for my own ethical reasons. I will be concentrating my focus on my main sponsors, and working with them to support the bigger picture of skateboarding as a whole."

Thats from the Transworld site, though I'm pretty sure they did not write those letters.  I dont think Apples would say "endoresed rider" at any point in his life.

i'd like to think that they quit active for noble reasons, like supporting small shops over mall chains, but it probably has more to do with Active continuing to sell blanks (ok, 99% blank boards with little active logos on them, but still blanks in my book)...I wouldnt be surprised if Flip made them quit.

Haha, you guys even hate mail order? Seems like something you'd never notice if you never needed it. How could it possibly bother you?

Is there anything you guys don't hate? Don't get me wrong though, I think it's funny.

I think it's definitely from Blitz. In a past Blitz "email blast", they did it through that same xmr3.com (mentioned earlier). I would not be surprised if it has something to do with Active's "blanks", but I would hope that it doesn't. I'd rather it be for something related to Active just being Active.

I'm guessing people on here probably don't like Active/CCS because they're hardly different from Zumiez/mall type shops in that they hurt the independent shops, barely care about skateboarding, and are likely only interested in $$$. I know that's why I don't like them.
