they should make a tiny version of the xtreme

cheaper / lighter / for cameras less big and more modern

interesting thread(s) i found searching google today:

"Spoken with Schneider and they are working on an alternative lens"  :o
from r/Optics

[close]

yo thats my reddit account! been talking with David from Century.

He spoke with pocket skate mag about the MK1

I'm not sure what any of it entails yet but I think anythign better than an mk2 would be pretty amazing at this point

This is insane, any more information about this?

yes last time i checked. same sensor, but HPX can pull out wider. no A is the old model and should be avoided if possible.

I have the no A model and really, it looks exactly the same. The only thing is that is slightly less wider and it's worse at night but other than that there's really no difference. I don't know with the Xtreme tho, since I don't have one.

I was just wondering, by the time the Xtreme is re-issued (if it's ever re-issued, because at this moment in time it seems to be taking overly long to get the process moving...) are people even going to care as much? I mean, sure - if they make a run of 100 they'll sell pretty fast (and hopefully not to Deathlens Fisheye Seller or any of those dudes who hike the price up by 800%)

With the market going down the Sony FS5/FX6 route, with the Canon 8mm lenses, which, love or hate the vig is evidently becoming the standard in skateboarding videography - are people honestly going to care about the re-issue of the xtreme? Personally, I would if they where lighter on a smaller camera because overall, for the size of the HPX's etc, the image quality isn't all that and they're only made better by the Xtreme, which I understand is why people hang onto the VX series so much, purely for the joy of using the MK1.

It's clear that the HPX/Xtreme is becoming the new VX/MK1 and with good reason as they've both dominated and became the norm. If an Xtreme is re-issued for a fair market price (I think the original run on BH Video where around £2.5/3k), then it might be worth getting one just in case you end up using it again in the future.

Does anyone know what the average price for a MK1 was? I'm not talking it's original price upon release which I'm sure was thousands, but a few years later. I used to see them sell in pristine condition with no scratches for £5-800, now you can't find an unscratched one for under £2000.

Right now, you can buy Sabotage Ryans absolutely fucking battered and unusable MK1 for only $2,280.00. What a steal.

Unless a company in the cinema camera world makes a 16x9 shaped fisheye, the Xtreme will always look better. If it's image quality people are concerned about with the hpx170 then you could always get a AC160 for 1080 60p.

I don't really think the industry is moving towards the Sony FS models. Yes, there are a few companies that use that camera but really, most of the brands/filmmakers are still using the classic HPX/Xtreme, which I personally love.

^^ Fingers crossed that third party manufacturer gets it right cause there's been over a year of radio silence from this project: https://www.instagram.com/centuryxtremelens/

My xtreme got stolen in 2019, and I was dumb enough to pass on the opportunity to buy a slightly scuffed one for $1500 afterwards  :-[

Since then I've just been using the opteka and stretching it in AE using the Optics Compensation effect–– hopefully some of you can find this technique useful

original (HPX171, 62mm fisheye with 62-72 step-up ring):

AE settings for 1080p30 footage:

^these settings are the best i've found – the image gets a bit softer but that can be fixed with some Sharpen effect in premiere.

Hi guys,

Since I got inspired by this post, I figured I would share my setup, maybe it can help someone:

-Decided I would try my old 72mm Opteka on my HMC150 with the help of a step down ring (72mm -> 62mm)

-Zoom in camera is set to Z11.

-I then tweak some settings in Da Vinci with a powergrade (so clip can be ready in seconds. Powergrade file is attached) + some extra sharpening on the sides (with a quick mask. You can add more sharpness with the 3rd node)

Here is the result (you can even add some Da Vinci AI upscaling if you fancy it): https://youtu.be/DrDc7k-mrCs?si=36flxdiv-9jbNY-3

Of course it's still not an Xtreme, chromatic aberrations are clearly visible on some footages, sides are pretty soft but it does the job for me.

Oh! And I asked a friend of mine to 3d print me a screen cover that helps me know what will be cropped in post

Let me know if I can help!

The big vig' clip doesn't look half bad. I don't love the corner distortion in the stretched clip. Xtremes have chromatic aberration, too, not terribly different than here. At the original ~3K$€£, they made some sense. At anything above that, and then for scratched, chipped bullshit, they're a fucking joke. The one thing they have going for them is the performance psychology factor.
