I like Beatrice’s skateboarding. I also think she looks good in Vans.

Hell. 50 / 50 front shuv is a hard trick. I’ve never done one.
for those who know, it automaitically shoves when you bitch out a 50/50.

@sle_epy I know she isn't good at skating haha, but just attacking her doesn't do much to sway me.

You said she is the defacto example for black females, why is that? She is one of two pros, the options are obviously limited. You also said it's more important for girls to see the best technically skilled skaters... but why, necessarily? Is it because she is a bad example in your opinion? If you think so, I am curious about what you think about this: "... I think the argument that 'she sets a bad example for young black skaters' is a weak one, too. I think it's weak due to the lack of faith it has in black girls who see her and decide to skate. You think that after they get into skating, they won't push themselves further than 5050 front shuvs just because that's what Beatrice does? Talk about insulting..."

Also, do Samarria, Rayssa, Nicole Haise, etc not have platforms? I still don't see how Beatrice having one takes away from them or from young female skaters who can see them, too. I'm still convinced she is not doing more harm than good here.
[close]

I said she was the defacto pro for all women outside of skating due to her platform. I think for younger girls black or otherwise that her attitude is horrible, so no I wouldn't want her to be the biggest influence on young female skaters.

Here we have an almost 30 years old woman acting like a petulant teen, not a great look and not who I'd want my kid looking up to. I think her platform is way way way bigger than theirs, because it is.

She's held up as something special inside and outside of skating, and the other women you listed aren't really despite being better at skating, and being better examples in general in terms of how they act and present themselves.

My bad on the misquote. I know she's been talking some shit on Instagram but I'm am positive that is all a response to the daily shit she gets from countless faceless idiots online, right? I personally can't fault her. Also, I think you should watch her Jenkem vid interview. I did not get bad vibes.

I think her platform is so big because she models too (hence the vogue interview). No doubt her sponsors push her because of how far she reaches... but again, I'm still not convinced she's a purely bad example for girls, inside or out of skating. My kind might be changed by some really terrible shit she's said as evidence, but if im being honest I haven't seen it. Here, or on her social media when I looked.

@camel filters that's fucking sick, you should've posted that like 10 pages ago instead of wasting so much time pretending Beatrice took your spot on vans and is ruining skating lol
@Urtripping You're projecting if you think my response had anything to do with me wanting in on this skate shit. She isn't ruining anything but vans putting 4 colorways of resources sure is. Ive been following Nika because I actually want this shit to progress. Most Beatrice defenders I've seen online are white dudes that don't watch POC female skating in general and think defending her is the be all end all. There are 3 girls at the local I've seen just skating that are POC women that are progressing fast so I find it hard to believe that vans with all their resources can't find any in the world to put on. I just think this idea that there isn't that many black girls skating so we have to celebrate the one that the big shoe company highlights no matter what is regressive. All this shit has already been said and seems like we just don't see eye to eye so I'll just leave it at that.

That being said, I'm a POC but still a dude so the negativity will just stop on my end. Whatever you feel about this skater, start skating and interacting with women at the park. Help them film and platform them if they show interest. If Vans is telling you this is the best we got, prove them otherwise by making the rippers in your town undeniable.

EDIT: Here is another skater to follow. She also has put out a street part but back when she was in cariumas so I'll just post this ig clip. It worth to note neither Nika or Adrianne follow the premier pro trailblazer

Also better than Beatrice based on that single clip but man the fake arm steez on some of these ladies is wild. I have to wonder, aside from Beatrice are they also big DR fans or are these ladies big Beatrice fans jacking her already jacked safety arm style... also they need to be called on this shit imo, everyone else gets called out for it. All I've seen is some apologist saying she is a big DR fan. And?

This is the best thing said in thread and it's true. We need men's help locally to be platformed because in most places there might be one or maybe two women who could be platformed appropriately but the smaller the scene the harder it is to find, especially for women who didn't grow up "hanging with the boys" and being semi socialized to blend well with a group of men (they're at a little disadvantage, not a flex).

It happened for me and it made my skating so much better so much faster because of the pressure to perform when someone is wasting precious vx tape on you and their time regardless of format. If I wrangle filmer on a saturday I best be getting that shit or going hard at it. I also wanted anything I have a trick in not to stick out as a token clip or two. I think a lot of women's efforts go unnoticed and they eventually bail because they can't find that crew to go have fun street sessions and film with. Just being there is the best experience ever. That part of the culture is amazing and if you don't find it I feel sorry for you because you're missing a huge piece of the overall experience.

Being validated by skaters you respect and look up to as a minority (female of any race, lgbtq ppl, etc) in the activity is also the most amazing feeling. All it takes is one dude on a crew to get you in and give you a shot, be that dude if the chick is good enough to hang. After that it's up to her to fit in, just like when you jump into any skate van and go on missions. Skaters should have the same standards regardless of identity because we can all strive to skate like a skater, not like a female skater or a male skater or whatever. Proper is proper, drive to succeed is universal, and style matters for everyone who gives a shit.

edit: This post isn't for the I skate for fun skaters so don't come at me, go do a sketchy boneless and a rocket kickflip on your Heart Supply board while you have fun at your local and repost it for the 100th time on instagram with no signs of future improvement. That is all.

Let’s be real. Not every skater has the skills/opportunity to turn pro. There’s limited space in a team’s pro roster and for a long time it felt like any even smaller space for minorities. Maybe it’s just me but growing up it looked like there’s only one or two spaces for black dudes on a team even less for women. Girl only had Jeron, did alien workshop? Did creature? Did Es? Did Enjoi? Did krooked? Plan b? Anti hero had just pfanner. Emerica had Preston and that was short lived. Ray barbee was already too old. Other than baker and Dgk where you had to portray a stereotypical gangster there wasn’t really a lot space for black skaters to become pro on a real team.
I’m annoyed with all these people’s inability to see that tokenism for the sake of representation has negative effects. Shit like this makes some marginalized people feel our skills don’t actually matter, we’re just a skin color place holder for marketing. You question your self worth. I’m I at where I am because I achieved it or did I just receive it?

it must be crazy when chico sells you something and the tables switch from "give me my money chico" to "giving my money to chico"

pretty wild that this is her 3rd shoe, especially when you consider how many people were just fired due to Vans recent underperformance.  really absurd the more I think about it.

I'd love to hear what other woman skaters think about all of this.

This sucks, and i can absolutely empathize with it. I am positive BD is wrestling with this inner dilemma right now, too.

My only response would be to ask this question: does skating have to stop at BD, reducing her to token representation, or will she open more doors for an underrepresented demographic?

I think the answer there depends on A) what companies do next to support black female skaters and B) how we, as skateboarders, choose to respond to her career.

If companies do what @camel filters was talking about and fuckin look for talent, put their money where their mouth is and start seeking out more talented black female skaters to hook up because they saw Beatrice's success with Vans, then I think we can say she had at least that positive impact on the industry.

If we, as a culture, choose to accept and celebrate this person for being a skateboarder (she is a real skater, I don't think any amount of hating on her trick selection or skill level can take that from her) who is pushing boundaries, then I think we also open doors that were previously closed in skating by making it a welcoming place for a group of people who've been unwelcome/absent from it. That goes for Samarria, Nika, and every other POC woman in skating, not just BD. I hope their sponsors push their careers as much as Vans has done for Beatrice, because clearly the culture is down to support many of them.

Girl only had Jeron?  :o I'm not sure what time period you're referring to here, but I doubt the owners of these companies were even thinking about tokenism for marketing purposes when putting together their core roster. They were just putting their friends on/skaters they liked. If anything I'd think tokenism in skating is a more recent development as it gets increasingly corporatized.

Just peeped Vans’ story and I have to admit she’s actually ripping.  She got way better, her style looks great, and there’s no question that she deserves a shoe.

Of course I’m talking about Nelly, in case there was any confusion.

not going to lie this shoe release is now getting on my nerves
i dont know if im too focused on it
but i have never seen this type of advertisement on my timeline for a shoe color way
never knew they had drop dates for vans shoes as if I had to rush to a store to still get it
they did it before with Zions shoe but this time it has a full video attached to it and several release parties around the us
stop talking about it its a damn colorway

Has anyone gone to any of the premieres for this Vans video? So curious what her footage is like since the marketing makes it seem Beatrice-centric. Excited for new Nelly footage regardless.

Nelly rips, she deserves a shoe. I don't think I saw a single thing from Beatrice besides that cringy last photo
Sir, I'm going to politely, but firmly, ask you and your common sense to leave this establishment.

But Im hyped for Morgan Smith...good news from event.

It's hard to answer this because she's an old soul.

Girl only had Jeron?  :o I'm not sure what time period you're referring to here, but I doubt the owners of these companies were even thinking about tokenism for marketing purposes when putting together their core roster. They were just putting their friends on/skaters they liked. If anything I'd think tokenism in skating is a more recent development as it gets increasingly corporatized.

Jeron and Shefey...chocolate had stevie and keenan.

És had Sal Barbie, Antwuan and Rodrigo Tx.

Don’t forget Girl had Jovontae.

Chocolate had Shamil too.

Real had Drake Jones.

Plan B had Sal.

World was the OG predominantly black team, followed by American Dream Inc.

Glad to see Ron Allen with the Krooked guest board back in the mix with Deluxe.

Glad to see I’m not the only one who drops gems on here while also dropping hot snakes (or spraying Yoo-Hoo on a bad day) into the toilet. 😁
