NYC is the number one skate destination in the world.

Way more important than California or Florida.

And Baltimore, DC, and I’ll leave NYC out since people only film at the same spots in a city that huge.

He definitely is referring to skate history but does hometown matter really? Most Floridians had their biggest moments in CA. Reynolds, Mullen, Cairo, even Clyde. Schmidts woodshop is here. I mean, I don't exactly think CA should take that credit but its a massive claim to say FL is more important.

And being from CA Ive always noticed/felt the Anti-CA thing at times but its really just weather, the size of California's economy and the birthplace of it. Its all happenstance and really has nothing to do with the skaters. In a parallel universe, skateboarding is invented in Malaga or Dallas or somewhere warm and we all visit there or some shit. Obviously not that literal but Ive just always felt there were more non-skate reasons facilitating CA being the hub than skaters dictating it.

Did Florida really ever even have a scene? I think of EMB in those regards, and all the legendary spots that California claims.

Nevermind the entire industry at one point, and from the start being birthed there.

If we’re just pointing at influential pros, ok, Florida has sway, but I don’t know that it’s enough to validate Clyde’s claims.

Personally I don’t think it is.

Furthermore, the progression itself nearly all happened in California.

Yes dude. Floridia and the rest of the east coast had/have a scene. Just because you had to go to Cali to get a sponsor doesn’t mean people were not absolutely killing it on the east coast. You all hate Ricky but he made it possible for east coasters to get sponsored without having to go to Cali. Even if it didn’t have a scene Rodney still changed everything about skateboarding just by hanging out in his garage every day progressing.

What the fuck is Clyde's delusion in that post??

Sure, he's been around and is a legend in skating, but these "facts" are anything but. So many of these points are either wrong, illogical, or don't make sense.

Idk, maybe I'm overreacting, but it seems like he doesn't actually know whats going on in skating currently

Right?  Who are the mediocre skaters getting sponsored?   Everyone rips, it’s just a matter of its to your taste or not

Well, not. Everyone,,.

the ollie, the kickflip, and the modern board shape (paul schmitt) all came from florida. where would skateboarding be without those three things? serious question

I agree, but I just feel like Mullen would have been Mullen regardless of where he came from. The same way skateboarding would have progressed wherever the biggest clusters of skaters are. Idk, I really do appreciate where skaters are from and the spots you come across definitely influence you but Im also convinced Mullen would have done the same thing in Tucson. I do nerd out about where people are from and find it interesting but a lot of skaters would still be them regardless of where they grew up. Im open to being wrong about that too

I obviously wasn't there or anything, but I remember reading/hearing Lucero or Blender say if Rodney didn't do the flatground ollie, someone would've done it soon after that, because they were already doing crack ollies at that time.  It also took California guys like Gonz to apply the maneuver to the street.

Gelfand's ollie was a big step, but as a counterpoint, was Tony Hawk the one possibly progressing that trick the most, since he was too small to get tons of air before tricks without it?  Believe it was seen as a cheat by some at the time, but the technique was "invented" by necessity.

And wasn't Gonz the one who wanted to drill his nose back more?  I feel like I've heard multiple claims to the modern board's development.  Mullen obviously had some influence.  Schmitt might have been the one to execute it, and hone it?

Obviously not trying to take anything away from Mullen, Gelfand and Schmitt by the way... just presenting a little devil's advocacy.

I'm pretty sure I've heard people from the time say that there were other people doing that, it's just that Alan Gelfand was the first one to get coverage - a sequence - of it, and that's because he lived near where the magazine was.

Of course I’m well acquainted with Rodney’s skating. I’m pushing 40 years old!

While we’re on the subject of Rodney, I’d argue that while yes he had invented numerous flip tricks, he didn’t really actually do anything with them.. not until pushed by Mike Ternasky.

Yes he’s an innovator, but I’d argue the Gonz and Natas are what shaped modern street skating. Then of course you have your Pat Duffy’s that took it to that whole next level.
