I bet lots of laughing assholes are pretty ashamed of themselves right about now after reading this.

Man, just a few months ago I realized I hadn't seen Holy Grail since I was like 10 years old so I found it on Amazon or something. It had it's moments, but as a whole it just didn't do it for me. I like plenty of British humor, but like "knights that say Meep" just ain't that funny.

Are most people that are into skating history also interested in history in general?

I totally get someone not giving a fuck about skating history…. It’s an activity they enjoy and not a homework project.  Perfectly reasonable.

But it makes me kinda sad for them that they are depriving themselves of a lot of really great skateboarding, especially with the internet making it virtually effortless to watch a lot of old videos.

I actually find most of it pretty lame to be honest. But I do love when all those chicks are begging to be spanked.

@SneakySecrets what are your favorite areas of history in general and also skateboarding history?

Thanks for the opportunity to nerd out.  Alexander the Great, the second Punic War, the fall of the Roman Republic, the Peloponnesian War, the French Revolution, both world wars, the Cold War.

As far as skating goes, I feel like you owe it to yourself to at least check out the frequently-cited classics: Welcome to Hell, Trilogy, Photosynthesis, Video Days, Mouse, Tim and Henry’s, Questionable, EE3… I’m sure there are some big ones I’m forgetting.

My personal favorite, maybe not the most revolutionary, is Asian Goddess.

With the exception of WW2, I only have a basic knowledge of the wars/time periods which you listed. Do you have any favorite books on those historical topics which you can recommend? Since you were the one that recommended Blood Meridian I'm pretty open to anything you have to offer. I'm actually reading All The Pretty Horses now too.

Saying the N word helped Morgan Wallen’s career way more than it hurt it.  He was popular before, but his not-so-subtle racist dog whistle catapulted him to a previously unimaginable level of fame and success.

Pro skating is 50 percent talent, 50 percent personality.  So many anonymous talented dudes out there would pop out if they were slightly more charismatic and outgoing.  Fascinating to see how good the real pros are at connecting with people in person.  I think that skillset is easily half the battle.

Aye bro, who TF is this racist POS that I’ve never heard of?? Apparently being a racist POS didn’t help him that much in his career because I’ve never heard of him, but fuck him anyway…

Have you by chance listened to the Radio War Nerd series about the Punic Wars? It's excellent.

I can see this happening too, although I don't know and can't guess an alternative. I have noticed this, if it has any connection at all... Has anyone else noticed this...

I have always loved thrifting and it's always a fairly successful endeavor. But in the last 3-6 months or so, it seems like any thrift store I go to is always cleaned out. Like hardly any product. I have noticed similar things in stores like CVS or Target... seems like they have much less product available.

Are companies selling less? Or are people all trying to save money and shopping at thrift stores more often? What do we think, Slapsters?
If my rep is ever an even number, please kindly throw me either a kook or a gnar in order to return me to my odd number equilibrium.

Oh boy, now you’re speaking my language.  I’ve been an avid thrifter my entire life, the Sally Ann was my happy place, my hometown had a chain of its own used clothing stores, that shit is in my blood.  All that has changed since Covid.

In addition to most places axing their fitting rooms and not offering refunds, only exchanges, which is morally fucking despicable imo.. VV and Sally Ann have raised their prices an astronomical amount and their selection is now literal garbage.  The cheaper local spots are so picked through it’s not even worth going.  Pandemic-related corporate greed, inflation, supply chain issues, and resellers have ruined the entire experience.

I’m extremely fortunate that I’ve since discovered a local “auction” Facebook page, where you can bid on and win clothes/shoes for a fraction of what you’d pay at thrift stores.  I’ve gotten so much good shit for so cheap.  I’m sure that’ll get blown out eventually too but hopefully not.

Agreed. There are a lot of things which became incredibly common and normal during the last twenty years of effective zero interest rates are not going to survive the money spigit being suddenly turned off.

Some people who don't want a regular job go to thrift stores then flip it online for way more money.

Or the bigger hussle of getting a job at the thrift store and taking all the best stuff for yourself and selling it privately
