How close do you live to “legit” skate spots?
« on: January 14, 2023, 03:06:06 PM »
I know it’s lame when kids say “there’s nothing to skate in my town!” when there’s always a parking lot nearby, but I’m curious about people’s living situations.

Do you live in close proximity to “legit” skate spots? Can you walk out your door and skate to a decent spot, or do you need to take a long car/bike/train ride to even find something remotely skateable? Is there a scene where you live, or do you need to travel closer to the city to find it?

For those who do live near spots, do you take it for granted? And for those who don’t, how do you stay motivated?

I live next to place that looks just like where all of modern street skating was invented and Rodney’s dad didn’t even need to pour the concrete.

In my part of Ohio we have a really good DIY spot. But it’s like four miles away from me. My neighborhood doesn’t even have sidewalks and the road is rough. I’m jealous of people who can just open their door and skate. I have to get in my car and go across town.

Hours . Denver has some legit spots , but up here in the mountains shit is few and far between. We have one of the oldest team pain parks in our town that never got finished , we have a super crappy pre-fab park and we have a skate “church” that is a free indoor skatepark that is only open certain days and times with specific age group requirements for the certain times . “Middle school night” etc .

For street spots , we have some curbs , and some “spots” that wouldn’t be considered spots in most cities .

live in a small seaside town. no spots in about a 10 to 20 km radius. there are tiny, mostly shitty skateparks in various towns here within cycling distance (4 to 15 km), so it could be worse.
but a 30 minute train ride is what it takes to get to actual spots.

I am within skating distance of some pretty cool spots that lots of you would probably recognize from videos but I just drive to the nearest skatepark with good transition instead lol

I live close to an old crusty skatepark that I still love despite it being old and shitty. As for legit spots, there is nothing here really other than some gap or handrail-type spots that I'm not going near but that have been skated before. I guess there is this half-decent bump to flat gap wheelchair ramp type spot too, but again it's nothing I'd casually skate these days. I'd kill for a spot that has 2 concrete ledges you can hit in a line or one big long ledge you could skate both ways. I'm not very in touch with the Vancouver Island skate scene but I'm sure there are a few decent spots littered around some of the larger towns and maybe some gems tucked away in the small towns I never visit. But as for anything truly legit or recognizable on film you'd have to take the ferry to Vancouver from Nanaimo which is a 3 hour trip from here basically.

I can walk outside my apartment and skate several spots you've probably seen in videos millions of times. I'm smack in Midtown Manhattan though so it also comes with some downsides.

Did anyone grow up near a legit skate spot? Most people don’t. You make do with what you got.

Now I live a block away from a gnarly spot overpass spot and a block away from a shit ledge spot that never grinds.

Now a live a mile from the skatepark and a mile from downtown, so most a few of the famous street spots are like than 2 miles from the house.

The problem is you can’t always have a casual sesh at these spots.

I live across the street from that hubba thing Louie frontside flipped and where nakel said something about being the necessary evil. It’s also 3 blocks from j Kwon. However I miss living 15 minutes away from my favorite spot, the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY.

I lived in Santa Ana as a kid. Seeing franky villani screw around at these spots is fucked. Ish cepeda did this out ledge at sacser park in downtown Santa Ana.
Now I live in uvalde tx. It’s an 80 mile drive to San Antonio. So I’m not to far from a good time.

I live in the suburbs, but it’s a five minute drive or ten minute bike ride/public transport from Civic, the plaza that Rowan Davis and Connor Reeve always skate. Great scene here.

I live across the street from the curb around the tree that started the mainstream acceptance of ride on grinds because it was in that one Supreme video. There’s also a bump to ledge, a double set, and a wallride spot all within a couple hundred feet of my apartment

The house we just bought is 1/2 a mile away from a school so curbs, manny pads, some benches and other stuff inside. 1.5 miles away from Chico State so yeah, I live close enough to skate to legit spots.
The minis coming with me, so I have a spot in my yard as well.

I got extremely lucky in that I got my apartment April 2021 when things were dead around here. I got a VERY nice 1 bedroom for $3k a month. Place is legitimately 3 times bigger than some places my girlfriend and I looked at. And it's rent stabilized so they can't jack it up on us. I know some people that got COVID deals for places where they were paying like $2300 and as soon as the original lease was up they wanted like $4k for a renewal. But legally we were locked in. Right now similar units in the building (that aren't rent stabilized) are going for like $5400-5600 for a one bedroom. It was honestly just a pure luck thing. And my GF is still finishing her PHD so she isn't making a lot right now. Things are skyrocketing but you can still get a decent place in Brooklyn or Queens for like $2500. Shit's expensive here. I can post pics if anyone gives a shit.

Any spot is legit as long as you skate it.
