My wife does it on and off, really helpful for her as a short term thing. I can't really add anything more to your post but good luck and I do think it is a completely natural way for humans to eat for short periods of time
[close]

Yeah it's totally natural. We hunted meat which sustained us until we hunted again. If times were lean we may have dug up some roots to chew on to survive until the next kill.

My eyes are open now to how much crap is pumped into humans through the supermarket system . It's a really bland way to eat but once you feel the benefits it outweighs your old habits.
[close]

No. Not at all, except in extreme environments lie the Arctic. Hardly any society existed like this, because the energy output to hunting (which often not successful) to the energy received by mean is so low. Our ancestors, and modern peoples who live on the land mainly foraged (led mainly by women, no less) and hunted on the side.

The only other exception i know of is coastal cultures, that are lots of fish. But even they greatly subsided on ‘gathered’ food like shellfish. The whole ‘we survived on meat’ thing is fully overblown.
[close]

You're acting like Europeans haven't been farming livestock forever, which obviously greatly reduces the amount of energy needed to obtain meat. And with that we also started breeding mammals for milk and poultry for eggs, another way that we could get animal protein into our diets with very little energy expended (compared to hunting).

Also what do you think the people of northern Europe ate during cold winters when it became almost impossible to grow vegetables because of the cold?

Read his post (the part I bolder) to see what I was replying to.
Then it might make sense why I chose to focus on HUNTING.

Okay, fair enough. I misinterpreted your post in a way that made me think you were saying humans got most of their diet just from foraging, which is certainly not true for any race of people that evolved in a cold climate.

I've been a pescetarian for six months. The only thing I miss is bbq brisket. Pretty amazing how close to meat-tasting these plant-based alternatives have gotten (the "chicken" nuggets and beyond/impossible burgers).

Good luck with this diet though.

No, I specifically talked about polar/marginal climates. Anywhere else, including Europe, foraging was the main source of food pre-agriculture. You can forage in the winter too. All herbivore mammals that don’t hibernate do it. Maybe exceptions like herders like the Sami, but as the general rule, foraging was always a main part of the diet, and this image of a caveman-style reliance on meat is overblown for the majority of humanity.

And with agriculture, plants were probably the majority of food, even in winter (as there are lots of ways to preserve vegetables, and they usually preserve better than meat, which can spoil more easily.

Lol,
Why people take health advice from this guy is beyond me. He doesn’t even look very healthy.

What the carnivore diet and the vegan diet have in common is that both have more to do with identity and belief than with health. Not that you can‘t be healthy on a vegan diet, but health isn‘t usually the reason people choose it. My wife was vegan for a long time and her doctor recently told her to eat Red meat occasionally, because she‘s iron deficient. My baby, too, so I finally get to cook some meat for them!

As a German I find it weird that in most American diets carbs are vilified. Complex carbs are super good for you IMO.

I think part of the issue is that heavily processed or refined carbs are far more widespread in the US (see corn syrup being used in fucking everything). The food pyramid, which used to be used as the basis for a complete diet recommended absolutely absurd levels of carbs per day,  so I think there's a lot of pushback on carbs bc of that

Man, I feel like now more than ever especially on social media all these different "gurus" and whatnot are pushing different kinds of diets and there are so many anectodes from people claiming this or that diet changed their life. It can be overwhelming. I don't subscribe to any diet dogma, I just listen to my brain and body.

I lost 70lbs in 7 months and counting, literally from diet alone and not even going to a gym for one second. I eat grass fed ground beef, steak, dry pork ribs, butter, and all types of fruit. Recently started incorporating organic white rice and I noticed some improvements including sleeping more soundly. So I learned carbs are also my friend. I have never felt better in my life and when it comes to skating, it drastically improved not being inflamed and fat from eating like shit. I still drink plenty of coffee, but just black or I'll put some butter or ghee in it. It definitely has an antidepressant effect and keeps me alert and engaged. And yeah, my shits are perfectly smooth and healthy 2-3 times a day.
[close]

Yeah that's awesome. The weight loss thing is unreal. It's been dropping off me as my body is no longer trying to burn carbs for energy and has converted to fats. I look forward to introducing new things to my diet in the future.  As for mental clarity it's better than it's ever been. 20 years of antidepressants is finally feeling like it is no longer needed.
[close]

Extremely irresponsible to suggest shit like this. Let alone the goofy all meat shit which has been proven to be a scam put forth by "alpha male" influencer types.

What if I said that I have been two weeks off the booze and drugs. Would you stand up and clap like on Oprah? I'm not pushing shit on anyone .

That's why i said suggest. It's irresponsible to suggest that eating only meat would mean you don't need anti depressants.

Lol how is that irresponsible? Diet plays a massive part in mental health. If a carnivore diet works for someone then good for them, I would bet a lot of money that you wouldn't say anything if someone was to say that going vegan cured their depression and helped them get off anti-depressants. Really cool of you to support the huge big pharma anti-depressant industry though, with the complete lack of evidence that SSRIs actually do anything it's really helpful to have guys like you around

Yeah it's totally natural. We hunted meat which sustained us until we hunted again. If times were lean we may have dug up some roots to chew on to survive until the next kill.

To get the same amount of calories as a handful of red meat you would have to spend probably every waking moment of your day foraging and even then you would be very deficient in fat and protein.

When I give people diet advice, the first thing I suggest is to spend a small bit of time learning how food works on your body.  Understanding the difference between potatoes and pizza crust.  Bananas and candy.  For me it's a lot easier to avoid the shitty carbs when i realize that my body thinks it just found the jackpot source of energy, but I'm going to crash out and feel like I need a nap in an hour.

These papers represent the first time that scientists have analyzed carbon isotope data from all early human species for which significant samples exist: 175 specimens representing 11 species, ranging from 4.4 to 1.3 million years in age.  The results show that prior to 3.5 million years ago, early humans ate almost exclusively C3 plants.  But starting about 3.5 million years ago, early humans acquired the taste for C4/CAM plants as well, even though their environments seemed to be broadly similar to their ancestors’.  The later genus Homo, including modern-day Homo sapiens, continues the trend of eating a mixture of C3 and C4/CAM plants—in fact, people who enjoy mashed potatoes with corn are practicing a 3.5 million-year-old habit.

[close]
What if I said that I have been two weeks off the booze and drugs. Would you stand up and clap like on Oprah? I'm not pushing shit on anyone .
[close]

That's why i said suggest. It's irresponsible to suggest that eating only meat would mean you don't need anti depressants.
[close]

Lol how is that irresponsible? Diet plays a massive part in mental health. If a carnivore diet works for someone then good for them, I would bet a lot of money that you wouldn't say anything if someone was to say that going vegan cured their depression and helped them get off anti-depressants. Really cool of you to support the huge big pharma anti-depressant industry though, with the complete lack of evidence that SSRIs actually do anything it's really helpful to have guys like you around

You're really dense. I most certainly would say something if they said they didn't need their meds simply because they're on some wacky new diet. Also my partner probably wouldn't be alive today if she didn't take antidepressants. It's not something that you magically cure, but having meds has certainly helped her.

[close]

Read his post (the part I bolder) to see what I was replying to.
Then it might make sense why I chose to focus on HUNTING.
[close]

Okay, fair enough. I misinterpreted your post in a way that made me think you were saying humans got most of their diet just from foraging, which is certainly not true for any race of people that evolved in a cold climate.
[close]

[close]

You believe pre-agricultural European people got enough calories to avoid starvation during winter from foraging berries and mushrooms? HMMMMM lol

To get the same amount of calories as a handful of red meat you would have to spend probably every waking moment of your day foraging and even then you would be very deficient in fat and protein.
Right, whereas killing an animal to eat is so much easier than walking around.
6am: roll out of cave
6:30am: kill a deer, cut and clean the carcass
7am: breakfast!

But it's not a 'wacky new diet'. The reason why carnivore diets work is because they eliminate all potential inflammatory foods. Gut health is very strongly linked to mental health, and it's hard to think of a diet that is more alien and inflammatory to a person of northern European descent than the modern American diet.

The severe depression I suffered from in my teens and early 20s was 'magically cured' by giving up gluten, or at least it coincidentally disappeared once I completely cut gluten out of my diet. I have Celiac's disease. Maybe your partner suffers from something similar and changing her diet would work for her and she could get off her meds.

If you’re going cite history, cite all of it. Human’s have been around for 2 million years, and in Northern Europe for only about 50,000 of those. And while I don’t have any problem believing that their diet was more meat heavy than some of their global contemporaries, it was undoubtedly still very omnivorous. Also keep in mind that their life expectancy was more or less half of what we enjoy today so something like the colon cancer someone today would run a very high risk of on an all/near-all meat diet wouldn’t have been of any concern.

And for the earlier arguments about the ethics and land-use ethics of producing animal vs plant calories at scale, that’s not something that should even be up for debate at this point. Absolute no-brainer.

Do what you want, but try to not kid yourself or spread bullshit to others about it.

I'm not going to 'cite all of history' because I am of completely northern European descent so that is all that is relevant to me when it comes to health and diet. My ancestors adapted to a diet where most of their calories came from meat and dairy while vegetables were very limited in the colder parts of the year and the vegetables, fruits and grains that make up the modern American diet weren't even available, ie corn, tomatoes, wheat, oranges, etc.

Carnivore diets do not "work" in any magical way and can be quite detrimental to the health of some people.

What I’m saying is fifty thousand years isn’t a very long period of time (and honestly you chop the last 8-10k off of that for the agricultural revolution) for the evolutionary adaptations to have been made to the degree you seem to be implying.  They survived and endured, obviously, but to claim some sort of genetic heritage disposes you to that diet is shit… dense, hard, infrequent, painful shit.

You're just making shit up at this point. And I think it's more than obvious what you're getting at with the "northern European descent" nonsense talking point.

Why not? It's much harder to survive in a cold climate which means more evolutionary pressure. Obviously the evolutionary adaption DID happen because Europeans are far less likely to be lactose intolerant than any other race of people.

What am I getting at? Do you think I'm a racist for acknowledging my European genes are different to the genes of an Asian or African?
You’re a Florida native, aren’t you?

European is not a race of people you dipshit.
