i’ll be the first to say it…
why the fuck are people having kids when the world if getting gnarlier and gnarlier every day.
-climate change posing an existential threat to humanity
-worsening economy
-potential coming war with china
-peak oil may have already been passed
-increasing famines worldwide
-an incredibly volatile housing market
-AI on the brink of automizing jobs
the number of problems in the world is increasing exponentially. do they not realize the implications of bringing a child into a world where one’s wellbeing isn’t guaranteed??
This is like 30% solid points, 70% scared to live type shit.
I feel like people on average had way more kids during more tense geopolitical situations. Wars suck, but the globalization of today’s economy and the connectivity of your average “developed nation” citizen almost guarantees that we’ll never see anything as gnarly as the World Wars, unless niggas start using Gundams or some shit. Much harder to use nationalism to recruit soldiers (and good luck trying to shame dudes out of draft dodging) and way more corporate influence on political powers than ever before. If Nazi party was prominent today Volkswagen and BMW would be telling Hitler how to operate, not the other way around.
Domestically you have some points, but it all comes down to the ridiculous costs of living, increased uselessness of the American labor force, and more prominent classism…especially in larger cities. Economic problems are fixable though, and a reevaluation of capitalism within the next 15 years is an eventuality at this point. No reason to not have children imo.
