Where do you buy 'nice' and 'cool' clothes?
« on: May 01, 2023, 09:05:32 AM »
This is embarrassing to ask as a 34 year old dude, but where do you buy nice/cool clothes?

I work from home and more and more I have to go to NYC to train sales people etc. Everyone in that office is semi hip/bougie nyc kids and I am a fish outta water. I have no nice clothes. All of my hobbies and activities outside of work are hell on clothes so I just wear carhartt and whatever work clothes are on sale. I've tried Uniqlo but it seems poor quality. J crew i used to buy in like 2008 but its pretty wack now.

I usually just go to Target for basic shit. Pretty much anything I wear that's not skate brands, or to skate in is Goodfellow & Co. from target. It's just easy.

If you are in the position to spend say 40$ on a blank shirt and $80 on joggers, try something like Madewell.

You could also go to Nordstrom rack, and find some decent brands on clearance

eBay/Depop/thrift stores almost exclusively. I imagine it can be hard if you don't know what you're looking for, but I've got an idea of what I like and I can seek out these things and they're usually less than the cost of a pain of chintzy jeans from Target.

I wear a suit to work but for those hipster business casual peeps nowadays white sneakers / tight denims / dress shirt and blazer seems the way to go. Not that I would wear that.

Regarding where to buy, I like Los Angeles Apparel’s basics a lot. I think the fit is more important than where you’re buying from though. Highly recommending getting your tees, shirts and pants hemmed by a friend or tailor. Start paying attention to measurements and know what measurements suit you

theres no onestop shop, just go to a mall and walk into different stores & pick up what you want

make sure you try things on before you buy them, otherwise youll waste your money

there are vintage+boujee thrift stores which are amazing bc all their stuff is hand selected, i recommend those for you specifically because itll give you a filter of whats cool for 20-35 y/o's

Really depends on your style and the price point at which you’re comfortable buying.
How many pieces do you want/need?
How often will you wear them?
I’m of the opinion to spend more on quality goods that have classic style that will transcend the trends, and that you can wear for years to come.
Not too loose/tight, blah blah blah, etc.
But everyone is different.
Let us know where you’re coming from and I’m sure that a few of us can point you in the right directions.

Edit: Most importantly, make sure that you’re comfortable in whatever you will be wearing.
Physically and aesthetically.
If you wanna spend a little more, find a stylist/salesperson at a mid/higher end store that you like and download them on your situation to get their help; that’s what they’re there for.

Everything nice that I own is Brooks Bros, Pendleton and Patagonia

I used to work at Shopbop and have gotten a lot of my wardrobe from there:

they've usually got some good sales going on.

If you’re into blank clothing, Everlane has some really good fitting tees. I got a sponsored ad on insta and tried one out and it’s my favorite fitting tee.

As for “skate” clothing. Volcom has the best pants in my opinion, chinos and denim are both good. Carhartt is cool, Stussy has amazing tops.

Quasi is killing it constantly too.

I've been going to Marshalls and Nordstrom Rack to get some good button ups and shirts. Surprisingly Ross has a really good selection of jeans and pants. Ive bought several pairs of Levis and Volcom pants there.

Someone said it here earlier, but Target’s Goodfellow line is great. I have chinos and oxford tops from them that work great for any casual occasion.

Everlane if you don’t mind spending a bit more. Uniqlo is good too, but it’s asian sizing, so I tend to have to take things in to get tailored, but they fit great after.

'Nice' for me is a pair of blue Levis 501s, a button up shirt and some brown leather boots or unskated skate shoes. Not sure how dressed up you need to be but I feel like regular fit jeans are still pretty acceptable in most situations.

I like my shirts to be 100% cotton or a different natural material. It looks better and is way comfier. Patagonia has some nice ones. I usually go with earth tones eg browns, greens and tan or sand colors.

Find shit that fits
Find that shit on sale

Did I mention find shit that fits?

Skating gear in one thing, wear whatever is comfy and cheap.

Dressing up, or well is an entirely different beast depending on your style.

Rag and Bone jeans fit me perfect but they're $$$
Travis Mathew/Bylt/Izod polos
Lululemon t shirts

I still can't find.good fitting skate pants with stretch...and fuck the industry XL tshirts worst fits ever.

I like going with Outerknown or Roark for shirts and jackets. They usually have sales on their websites year round so you can always find something within your price range. As for pants I hit up the Macy's website and just get me some all black Levi's or chinos. Recently found me some nice RVCA & Volcom long sleeves on there too and they've been perfect for office wear. Ross usually has hidden gems if you're patient and dig deep enough.

But like others said, shop within your comfort zone and your price point. No reason to spend a pretty penny on gear you're going to feel unconformable in.

One thing that helps is an inspo list. Find pictures of cool people wearing cool clothes, movies, tv shows, different eras; whatever the fuck you find hip really. One advice though: don't wear shit with logos printed all over the place, it's tacky, it looks like shit and if you want to resell it some day it won't be worth shit. I caved in on the hype and bought a few supreme pieces and when I realised those hoodies look awful the price fell and I feel dumb.

Bunch of people in this thread with the good recs, stick with tried and true classics, fit is the most important thing, etc

We also live in a time where you can buy literally whatever you want and if you can't find it? You can probably find some contractor to make it for you, the internet is great for this. Plenty of great fits in the "Post ur fits" thread too. Hopefully we see you post in there soon!

I agree that it's all about fit.

Find something that isn't far off what you wear and like and feels authentic. People can spot a fake vibe pretty easily and that will make you less cool. If you're a male you cannot go wrong with a slightly relaxed (505, maybe 541) denim/chino and shirt pairing. Other than your pants length you won't really need to hem anything and can dress things up or down really easily. I like buying Carhartt WIP stuff of Grailed or Depop. It's softer and generally looks nicer and you can get really good deals. Fits true to size but I go 1 waist size up usually.

I personally only buy staples. I've had some jackets and pants for a decade and they look just as good then as they do now. Nice material blank t shirts go a long way. You can buy Comfort Colors blanks online or shop sales from places like Marine Layer or Frank & Oak.

Whatever you do do not mix top/bottom fit styles. Like, don't wear a tight ass t-shirt and relaxed fit denim and vice versa. It always looks horrible.

One versatile thing I like is a nice belt. Generally a thicker leather option and I have a nice waxed woven cotton belt and they can be worn with anything.

I'd also invest in a jacket of some sort. Buttons always dress up better than zippers, but some of the Barbour stuff can be really easy to find used and work for biz casual and just wearing around.

I agree with what has already been said on here.

Here is my ranking:

#1. Thrift stores and estate sales (and it is not even close)

- You have embarked on an adventure! You NEVER know what you are going to find. *note* ALWAYS check the pockets. You might find some cold hard cash, or worst case scenario, napkins.
- Even if you do not find anything, it is still entertainment to a certain degree which is free for that matter. A great first date idea to weed out the knuckleheads and riff-raff.
- Checking out different thrift stores/estate sales in different communities which vary by socioeconomic status can yield some really cool stuff, sometimes brand new clothing.

#2. Old Navy

- Consistent
- Inexpensive
- Available in many places across the US

#3. Online shopping

- Searching is so much easier than in person
- Downside is you can't really try stuff on
- Dealing with package theft also sucks, depending on where you live it may be more of an issue than in other places

I lean towards quality timeless basics - J Crew, Everlane, and plenty of Target/Goodfellow as well. Historically when not skating I’ve worn higher end denim by APC/Nudie/3sixteen/Naked and Famous but lately as my skating ramps back up I find myself reaching for dickies and Levi 501 more than anything.

Don’t sleep on the 501 shrink to fits - by them at your normal waist size and 2 inches extra in length, wear for 2 weeks or so as is and then wear them in a hot bath and keep them on till they dry - and you’ve got a timeless pair of tailored jeans that could stand up against jeans that cost 10x. Not to mention they’re still comfy enough to skate in.

Outerknown has great flannels and button downs, as does LL Bean. And most of my outerwear is Patagonia and Filson.

I own a Bonobos black suit, a few brooks brothers dress shirts, black Hudson brogues, and Uniqlo dress socks - I plan on buying a linen suit soon as well - my wife has a lot of friends / family members on the verge of weddings. I also have a navy blue and tweed blazer I often pair with an Oxford shirt and nice jeans.

I have 10 or so skate brand hoodies, and a smattering of skate and band T’s. But this pretty much makes up a solid wardrobe for my lifestyle - I’m 37 work in tech, play in a few bands, and my wife and I live a rather high/low lifestyle - from burgers and wings with our son, to natural wine bars and Michelin starred restaurants around the world.

Dressing your age doesn't mean dressing boring, I still proudly rock t-shirts with skate logos, just smaller logos, so no Spitfire Bigheads or Thunder Grenades. Subtle and tasteful is my rule, but I'll break out the Venture AWAKE t-shirt on weekends because they are the best.

I probably dress like shit compared to my contemporaries and can't be bothered with trends so I stick to basics. Start with a fitting pair of jeans / pants, my work bottoms are all Fourstar pants on clearance. A pair of white shoes like Adidas Stan Smiths / Onizuka Tigers are versatile and will fit 90% of occasions, maybe Dunks if you want a splash of color for the outfit. Some skate shoes can be classy without being too tech like Lakai's Telford / Cambridge.

Unless you're working in banking / finance most offices are accepting of street fashion, jeans + t-shirt + blazer or jeans + dress shirt are fine.

Can we repurpose this thread to male fashion advice? Dressing well with skate fashion and how to avoid look like a manchild.

It's depends what is "cool" and "nice" to you I guess. I'd start with wearing stuff that actually fits and works for your body type, and I don't mean tight everything. I think that's a good first step to "nice".

If it’s a slim chino pants, Amazon has their own brand which I like. As well as Uniqlo and target, which has her own brand called Goodfellow.
As far as T-shirts, I usually just get it from my local skate shop and wear their T-shirts
