his foot placement seems counterintuitive for a frontside flip. I had to rewatch it a bunch just to confirm whether he was heelflipping or not. There’s no way I could get my board to flip setting up like that.

I thought the same too. I have kickflipped like this for the past couple of years ever since i started actually trying to do them higher. It prevents rocket flipping. I could frontside flip like this too. It's easier to do with smaller boards (7.5-7.75) and size 13 shoes. You really have no choice.

That's the Jeremy Wray kickflip foot placement like mentioned earlier in this thread. Watch Jeremy Wray rolling up to the Carlsbad gap fs flip in the opening line of Second Hand smoke, toes over the edge of the board.
