Best part of the 90s was no phones and little internet.

This argument is made all the time but you can spend like $20 for a ball and go shoot some hoops or whatever. Skating is expensive, especially when you start going through boards and shoes more often.

A lot of skaters don’t come from money, they get a complete and skate that until there’s no nose or tail though. But I do get what you mean, a lotta OG skaters were upper class blonde kids who surfed and lived in nice suburbs

skateboarding compared to basketball is obviously a bit more expensive but it’s pretty fuckin far from a “rich kid sport”

From my experience, it was about a 70/30 split of broken home/low income to dual parent/mid-higher income. This was 80s-90s after that can’t say since I was married with a kid. I was in the broken home/low income part.

Definitely not a sport.
It’s playing with a toy. No matter what corpos say/want you to believe.

I've known plenty of "rich" and "poor" skaters, both have had success. These days I notice a lot more children of wealth in skateboarding though. Lot of 12-16 year olds who own a fresh iphone, wear polar/butter pants, dunks and always have fresh setups. They have all had skate lessons/coaching too. Not a chance I would've been bought any of that, a fresh deck for my birthday or christmas maybe.

My maybe unpopular opinion though is that sw360 flip lipslide (or blake carpenter's tailslide recently) to rolling out forwards is kind of lame and feels like an unfinished trick for a pro to me. like, you're obviously just falling out at the end and not really controlling the trick. (well aware that I could never do this trick and that a phenomenal amount of talent is required). it's just aesthetically wrong to me.

That’s a really an unpopular opinion. I didn’t even like Mouse that much- I thought those guys were all pretty insufferable, except some of the lower tier guys like Keenan and Chico. And the skits were annoying. But even I thought Guy’s part was undeniable. I can’t thank of too many people who ever switch backside nose grind 180’d a handrail.

But I could maybe understand not being into it if you missed the era. That era was kinda whatever.

Something interesting needs to happen in skateboarding if we’re really on here talking about this.

Regular sports are “cheaper” if you don’t plan on seriously taking up a sport. You gotta buy the equipment, pay to join the team, pay for a trainer/coach… etc. I’m pretty sure a sport like tennis is much more expensive than skateboarding, baseball too… all you need to skate is a board… “skate” shoes aren’t a necessity.

Skateboarding didn’t become a rich kid activity until Tony Hawk landed the 900 and the video game came out… when skateboarding died in the late 80s and all the way until the late late 90s it was shunned to be a skateboarder. Regular people stereotyped skateboarders as low lives and delinquents…
