A couple of years ago I was a stoplight at the bottom of exit ramp on my way home. There was a younger guy panhandling from the median. He had on some acid washed, pink dyed skinny jeans. They had factory made rips all up and down the front of the legs, uniformly spaced, not rips from wear/abuse.
Staring at this guy’s jeans. it struck me all of a sudden that I was watching a down-and-out man wearing a working/middle class man’s fast fashion version of a rich man’s high fashion stylized version of a poor man’s torn and tattered clothing. The world is a strange place.
That’s not really an apt comparison for what’s going on here, but there’s some connection in there somewhere, maybe.
As far as the golden goose sneakers go, here’s a NYT puff piece about the repair-driven ethos of the company. (I’ll post the text separately)
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/09/style/golden-goose-sneaker-repair.html Maybe their in-house cobblers and cordwainers were getting bored with the pedestrian (pun intended) damage that
trophy wives could do to their shoes. Sponsoring skaters so you can repair some truly fucked shoes… there’s no greater test of one’s skill!
