From what I understand they were actually a respected and solid company <1997 or so. I think by around 2000 they had pretty much devolved into a lifestyle brand that appeals more to motocross bros and mall teens, (and the random Mike V fan) they had every opportunity to be a dope brand with the Sal 23’s and the raps etc. but you know how that shit goes.

When I first started skating in the mid 90’s Etnies were the shit. At least around my area. I had several pairs before DC and other brands started making a big splash. I had raps, mc raps, skols and scams. If he is really of I could see him going to FP

Its funny because etnies actually makes some of the best quality shoes for skating, but they get flamed for keeping their business afloat with some other questionable designs, ads, collabs, etc.

They get rightfully flamed for those decisions, but the Marana and Joslin are (tied for placement) are in the top 10 modern shoes for quality/performance. The Rap they reissued has the chance to be what it used to be, when they stop giving it shitty colors. Seems like Etnies mostly knows what they're doing and are nowhere near being done, let alone Soletech as a whole.

Trevor just left/kicked/contract ended, so it makes sense others may be gone as well, but Sheckler being off seems odd. Feels like he'd be moved into a Legacy/Legend list before leaving entirely. We'll seeee

Never understood the argument why being sold at Walmart explains kicking teamriders. Wouldn't the insane amount of money you're making off that allow you to pay people more rather than less? I could see Shecks on sufficient delusions to start his own shoe brand. Not sure what's going on bit everyone and their mama is making shoes all of a sudden

Yes. 1993 it was easily the coolest shoe brand in skateboarding. They didn’t start getting weird until after the briefly lost their trademark, rebranded to Emerica (Etnies America), and came back as more of a “skateboarding + other action sports” brand.

100% still worth buying. The Michelin cupsole is easily top 5 shoe tech in the last 20 years. The Marana and Joslin are solid and good looking shoes. The Rap has potential to be a great dunk although now that it's back. I'll gladly spend $ on their shoes

Maybe Soletech would be more popular if they made shoes that don’t look out of place on adults outside of a skatepark. Last Resort was able to accomplish this, so I don’t think it’s a matter of core vs. corpo. It’s simply a matter of making classic looking shoes that appeal to a wide audience.
