Just wanna give a shout out to Dune for currently working on getting outstanding orders sorted. That backlog gotta be quite the pile up!

I don’t want to sound like a hater because I actually like Stereo, I like Dune, they always had cool videos and I liked the graphics.

With that being said, I’ve been skating in California for 30 years and I have literally never seen a Stereo board in the wild. If they aren’t fully backed by Jason Lee’s Hollywood money, I don’t know how they’re still a company.

I worked at a shop when I was younger and regularly communicated with reps while I was there. The rep for stereo would call all the time. I believe his name was Ish? Suuuuper friendly dude, was always down to talk skating for 45-60 mins every call. Obviously he was trying to sell but I always felt bad because he seemed so genuine. Owner told me he was never going to buy stereo. Nobody in my area knew what stereo was and nobody was buying a shirt retailing for $30 in the days of Altamont and omit clothing popularity.

I wonder if Jason Lee is doing much with stereo nowadays or even involved anymore? He seems more concerned with managing his new film/camera store in Eagle rock with Raymond Molinar. If any heads in LA are into film, you can usually spot either of those dudes at their shop Eagle Rock Camera and they’re both super friendly

I miss molinar footage so much. he bowed out way too soon.
This has me cracking up, what exactly does Black Flag have to do with measuring your dick starting behind ya nuts?

Skateboarding is nothing but a game to find the right fits to appear like you're a proportional human being instead of a midget or a giant.

The last few years they were really leaning into the Tincan days and I thought about buying some stuff. Seemed like Lee was super involved with Pastras. Obviously things have changed.

It seemed like Jason was signing a bunch of Stereo decks and dvds a few years ago. I just figured he was trying to help Dune out but seeing some of the comments here, they had a falling out?

molinar seems like he's pretty good homies with jason lee judging from his instagram stories. i think they both work at a camera store together? (or j. lee owns it and he's an employee there)

edit: oh i see someone mentioned that already

100 percent conjecture, but it looks like Jason maybe was fine with letting it end again due to lack of profit/ interest.   Dune not so much. He is not alone in this but it seems many companies are started/ continued as a personal need, not a market need. This is fine but the amount of people doing this probably hurts the industry as a whole.

Can we get some wiggle room on that and at least include this promo?

better quality one here. yeah i had high hopes for the reunion team (olly todd, shimizu, tony silva, dyson ramones. all great) and then they never actually released a full video with those dudes and most of them just left eventually. kind of a shame

[close]

That would have never happened simply because stereo didn’t pay the riders decently and didn’t have a travel budget. All those guys besides Clint & Ben G. were really lazy and always had excuses to not skate something. When they eventually stacked some clips they’d give them up to their better paying sponsors for obvious reasons. Then the cycle would continue, making a full length impossible. It’s a bummer because Benny, Raymond, Dyson, Supa, & Olly  ripped but there’s a reason why there isn’t a lot of footage of them throughout their careers.
[close]

when they rebooted with clint and benny, benny had years of dope ads and photos for them, saying he didnt produce is not true.

I said footage but I’d love to see evidence of these ads you speak of.

i'd agree tony silva was definitely on the last gasp of his career when he was on stereo. don't remember much coverage

though him and olly (and dyson too i think) all had some 411 parts around that time. i think there was an entire 411 themed stereo issue? maybe.

Stereo had a time and place, I loved the Visual Sound and Tincan Folklore era’s and maybe after that the brand should have died. The version that came after with Dollin, JR Nieves and Danny Gonzales tarnished the legacy.
I had high hopes when they relaunched with Giant but felt more like a 60’s dad vacationing in Hawaii vibe.
I respect that brands have era’s and evolve but every new generation was seriously decayed after the next in every way(team, graphics, energy)
That said after seeing Chris post an old photo with Ethan Fowler wearing a Stereo Sounds hoodie I would rock one of those. I still have a pile of stickers.
There is something about that sense of arrogance you have when you are young and doing something cool and knowing it. Maybe it was that time from 93-97 but they made cool boards, ads and videos.

Haven’t seen J Lee in anything in a minute, and it makes sense that he’d be in asset-protection mode.  “Celebrity” isn’t a never ending money tree.  It would be horribly short sighted to go actually broke over your tax write off passion project albatross.  Stereo has been bargain bin dogshit for at least 15 years now, I think it’s safe to say it’s run its course.

I think there’s still interest in the legacy aspect tough. I really dig everything Blockhead, and it’s fantastic that they’re active and actually going through a revival, but everything doesn’t need to be THAT. There’s space for companies to put out old graphics and products that people are interested in buying, without actually having a team or putting out videos. At least so long as there are still original individuals involved in the company.

Stereo still sells a lot of signed boards, and some artsier designs. I’d rather Stereo continue to exist than most new companies popping up.

Obvs it can't match visual sound but comeback stereo was pretty decent for a bit. I even liked Ben fisher and Joe Pease as new guys but Yoshi, hoffart, Tommy Flynn? Prob should have called it a day there.
They also used to sell pretty good price point boards for $50 Aus which was ridiculous. But not long after is when it started to just feel like a company for people on theeve

Might as well post these

Yeah I've been tempted to get some reissue boards because Stereo was my favourite company as a kid, but I never pulled the trigger.

I only ever owned 1 deck of there’s but I always enjoyed all the Stereo videos. It always came off as more of a “passion project/love for skating” vibe.

That was another company that had an awesome rep. I’m about to check the Mercari app for shits and giggles to see if there’s any omit shit for sale on there. I looked on there last night and there was a hilarious amount of AYC for sale on there haha.

man, i didn't know about the hoffart thing. is that the most non-stereo like skater to ever ride for stereo?

i remember they were pushing this one kid pretty hard at one point, this was after dyson ramones left or right before. i can't remember his name but he kinda looked like angel ramirez or something (this might be totally wrong). just a total blank right now.

Also I remember Jack Sabback left Traffic because Stereo was a better paycheck. Which seems crazy to think now.
