Don't get the EM, I read it only has Aperture-Priority mode.  Get something fully manual because you never know when you'll want to set both the shutter and aperture.

Search for the Canon AE-1 and get a 28-80mm lens, a zoom lens and a flash.

there are all kinds of good old nikons that are all pretty affordable now days. The fe and fe2 are great models. Hell, I've even seen f3s and f5s for affordable prices. Canon AE1s be careful. They are decent cameras, but are getting way overpriced so I would say price them around cause they go for anywhere from 20-150 bucks. I learned to shoot on an olympus OM-1 when i was in high school, and 15 years later I still take some of my favorite pics with it. They are cheap, they have no presets or priority modes, just straight forward, no frills all manual. And their pictures hold up against cameras way more expensive.

It depends on what you enjoy shooting, but unless I'm shooting action stuff I almost always use my nifty fifty. A fixed lens means you don't have to mess with zooming and refocusing and lets you concentrate on metering and learning your shit. They're also the cheapest lenses around and easy to find, so added bonus.

Just going to pop in and recommend the Nikon FM2 again. Fully manual, fully mechanical (except for the light meter). I got mine for something like $125 a couple years back with a big bag and a lens, I'm sure there are bargains to be had.

Decided to look up the cameras talked about above, and found a c1985 Canon AE1 with a 50mm lens for $20 on Kijiji that's 'been around the block'.  Would it be a good camera for someone who doesn't know what they're doing in regards to film?

Yeah, should be good. But I'd recommend shelling out the 40 bucks it'll cost to have a camera store check it out and clean her up.

I have a lighting/flash question. So, I don't have a ton of experience with a flash or strobe or anything that has to be tied to the shutter. Most of my photography is either using natural light or a homemade continuous light rig of a couple floods and some diffusers. I like the idea of getting a cheap strobe so I can do more portraits, but I also like to shoot outdoors a lot, where a speedlite could come in handy. I can't really afford both. Any suggestions?

Also, if you use a remote flash, maybe rigged up to a tripod, does that come close to a low-budget strobe?

I have a Olympus pen e-pl1, but I want to get a viewfinder for it. Anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced one online?

Here's the camera for reference:

naw, I have the same camera. I looked and looked all over for one that was reasonable and I couldn't find anything under 100. I said fuck it and just bought a regular dslr. Now I just want to sell it. I will say the Olympus OM-D looks pretty sick. Fixed the viewfinder thing, still super compact.
