HA, this ones great, what was behind him? His pose would make me assume a globe or something

I think he hurt his back when he put on his bag, so he's just stuck in that position screaming in pain.

Yeah fair enough, i dont nomally edit my stuff but ive been ill recently and just got bored enough to do something pointless. (and my minds clearly not in the right place haha.

Dont worry, it wont become a regular thing. Should have a nice roll of film produced in the next few days, so i can post some good old fashioned b&w film grain.

And just to try and redeem myself, heres a pic of a queens jubillee boat that i got round to editing.

After a bit of camera advice from the slap photonerds

I've been offered the following from a work colleague (who I've known for years) for ?300/$475, although I can prob haggle a bit

Canon 30D

Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS
Tamron 55-200mm F4 -5.6
spare battery
clear filters for both lenses

It's been his back up camera and he's just upgraded his main one so this is surplus to requirements.

I've never had anything other than a point and shoot but I really want to start taking more photo's.  Nothing spectacular, but now the kids are growing up having some nice pics of them (well better than the quick snaps I take on my iPhone) would be worth the money over a couple of years.  Other than shots of the family I will probably use it mainly for landscape shots or pics of buildings.

If I do buy it, I would inevitably end up taking it out skating on occasion (especially when I take the kids with me) so what's the verdict on this camera for a total beginner?

^^^^Well for one, those lenses are nothing to scream over. I am not big on telephoto zoom lenses but they could be good for some daytime skate photos. Landscapes would be hard on that Tamron and the Canon would be better for that since it is wider.

IMO I wouldn't get it unless he sold it to you for $300 cause you can get the newer 40D on Craigslist for cheaper (I just checked and someone is selling one in my area for $300) then what your friend offered. That 30D would have been more worth it if the lenses had some value to it but of course it might be more valuable to you if you shoot those kind of photos. Also remember that digital cameras have a shutter life and unless if your friend changed his shutter, it could break on you within you using it. Also the older Canon Rebels are worth looking into as well (T2i/T3i). They might be more expensive but they are better cameras with better ISO. I think the only thing that the 30D has is a better burst rate but 5 fps is hardly something you can get a good sequence out of.

thanks for the info, I'll see what the wriggle room is on price when I waggle cash under his nose later this week.  If he drops a fair bit I may grab it

my 5cents:

this is kinda the setup if people want to upgrade from a digital point&shoot because they think that every picture they take is better if they use a dslr.

i am with fongstarr here because i am not a zoom-guy myself, but for me its really obvious that i started to take much better pictures once i started using fixed lenses. (plus i dont think that those clear filters are necessary..)

so my tip if you want to take nice portraits and stuff from your kids would be to swap the tamron for a canon 50mm 1.8, costs nearly nothing and yet its so much better (image quality wise).

Yes.....get the 50mm 1.8. You can get it for less then a $100 on CL and when shot right, the photos come out super clear. The range is odd but with portraits and what not, it shouldn't be that difficult. Just don't expect to take photos with a bunch of your friends in it cause some of them will bound to get cut out. Still, that lens will make you a better shooter since it limits a lot of what people mostly shoot. It will teach you depth of field and just framing your subjects better. If I were you, save that $300 or whatever money you have and just get a better DLSR body then the 30D. That thing is seriously a dinosaur in digital camera world and unlike film cameras, age is a bad thing.

Look into the Canon T2i. I found some of the bodies used (like the link below) for $300. 18mp, better sensor, better iso and even HD video.

I hear you. Working full-time hours in the Winter blows. I haven't even pulled my camera out of the bag in like 3 months. Maybe I'll have to dip into the backlog and edit some more of the old stuff. It's been too long since I posted anything.

But nice to see some good shit from everyone in here.

Went to an abandoned factory with some friends and got some pictures. I really should do something like that more often, especially with the shitty weather nowadays:
