Get out to Eastern Oregon, and Western Idaho. I drove past a bunch of wildfires last week when I was driving back from Wyoming.

Damn, all those pics are rad friendly dave.

I've always wanted to take some long exposure shots of a train and decided to head downtown and try it out. I liked how this one came out:

It's a little light leak, or bokeh of some kind. It always seems to pop in when I'm shooting with my Canon on a lower shutter speed.

dropbox, best idea.

question for the tech-savvy guys here: i am torn between getting a old 5D Mk1 as an addition to my 7D and selling the 7D and getting a 5DMk2...

i simply want that goddamn FF sensor, even though i of course know that i wont need it. and i kinda feel odd having 2 cameras, but i dont know if i will be happy with the slower framerate of the 5dMk2, even though i hardly ever shoot sequences.

or maybe even go for a 1DMk3?

any ideas, input, experiences? (especially upgrading from crop to FF or 5Dmk1 to mk2 or sth... hell, i would even take advice from nikon guys! haha)
[close]

i just got the 6d. i started out looking for the 5d mark ii, but it the 6d is basically the new version of the 5d mark ii, and just a couple hundred dollars more. also way way better in low light which is pretty rad. it shoots 4.5 frames per second, and i definately wish it was faster there. i didnt think i'd care but its probably the only thing i dislike about the camera so far. I dunno if its worth the extra $$$ for a 5d mark iii or 1dmk3(if those are faster, i cant remember)

full frame is pretty cool, but also annoying that you lose so much telephoto. I dunno, its my first dslr and im super happy with it, havent shot a lot of video but it looks pretty great to me. im not a pro tho, sorry.
[close]
The 5d MkIII is the new version of the 5d MkII. If you want a full-frame camera, don't get a 1D MkIII. That's not a full-frame camera.

I don't understand what you mean by "you lose so much telephoto." You mean it's a wider shot? If you just crop it, it'll be the same thing as a camera with a smaller sensor.

Hercules, I'd say just shoot film if you want full-frame.

Full frames is just a bigger sensor, so lenses that are used on it show true to its length where as say a 50mm on a crop is really like a 80-85mm in distance. The only real setback on a crop is just the image quality but it’s honestly really subtle at most. Still in the industry, I believe everyone uses full frames and more so has to do with the burst rates cause most crops don’t exceed 7 frames per second.

And is the 6D that much better than the Mark 2? I honestly heard otherwise or they are damn near on par, aside from maybe the video quality. The only real thing I hate about the Mark 2 is the focusing system cause that shit sucks some serious balls but it was corrected on the Mark 3.

Love that one! Thats really sick, I wish you were able to tell how the run-up was and so, but then you wouldn't get the same dope perspective and the hill which is what makes this picture so great imo. Thats what sucks about shooting skateboarding, sometimes you just cant get it all in there.

I shot Cph Pro for some local mags and so on, and I really dont think it turned out all that great. Shooing at an indoor skatepark at contest conditions usually gets pretty boring looking. But I was pretty stoked to be able to shoot some of those guys there.

@ fongstarr

yea the 6d isn't that much better than the 5d mark ii. its basically a newer version like i said before.

more autofocus points (faster too i believe)
way better in low light
better video
lighter/smaller
sd cards rather than CF
its 8 years newer, they don't make new 5d mark ii's anymore.

so you can get a brand new slightly better camera (thats way newer), for a couple hundred dollars more than a used 5d mark ii.

Part of this is me still trying to convince myself I made the right choice.

@okdad i'd say the 5d mark iii is an upgraded version of the 5d mark ii, where the 6d is more like a 'newer' version of the 5d mark ii. if that makes sense, im terrible at properly expressing what i mean. also the 5d mark iii is ridiculously overpriced, an extra 1200 $ for an extra sd slot, a bunch of autofocus points and less moire in the video. thats a hella lot o money
I;m sure i;m not the only dc/monster/subaru type guy here

Unfortunately we don't get to pick and choose where we go. The incident commander on the fire has to order us as a resource. Then we can either accept or decline the assignment. It's been a pretty slow year so far. Barring the Yarnell Hill tragedy.

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.

You've got it backwards. Crop sensor cameras are the fast ones, eg. the 1D and 7D. Full-frame cameras, such as the 5D, are not so quick.

P.S. Your pictures aren't showing.

Haven't shot much outside of work for a while, but I started shooting a fair amount of film lately...here's a few from a hike in the Marin Headlands back in May, some redscale towards the end:

Was taking some photos of downtown SD and it's a pretty standard/boring shot, but I really liked the pelican that was hanging out there. Was stoked he stayed still during my 15 second long exposure.

That's a freakin good looking photo! I wish I had the knowledge to understand why you chose 15 seconds exposure though.

Thanks Universal! It's actually my non knowledge of why I chose 15 seconds. I was just experimenting with all different lengths of exposure to try and get different looks of the water and this one happened to be a 15 second exposure. It might have been 10, but can't remember for sure. I'm still new to photography and just trying lots of different things to get a feel for my camera and having fun with it :)
