Wow fongstarr!! those last shots are sooo nice, really makes me want to go shooting at night again, just feel a bit sketchy going out at night with an expensive camera on a tripod around here.

amazing work, as usual Fong!

And if you dont feel good about going out to take night-shots, group up! get some homies to go with you, maybe motivate them to skate around while you shoot, might even get a good skateshot out of it.

My skate-friends are lazy as fuck, so i cant see that happening haha. And my only other photographer friend who would be on it is currently on crutches and cant really get about, so thats not an option either. I guess ill just have to dress like a ruffian so i dont get troubled. Gonna try and force myself to go out tonight.

Thanks finknoos and Hercules Rockefeller.

Shooting at night (in the city anyways) is a odd thing. I mean I do get super paranoid but I also have that "I wish someone would!" mindset as if I am ready at all cost. I talk about this with my photog friends sometimes where it would literally have to be a gun for someone to take my stuff and even at that, I might take a bullet for my stuff. Of course this is more saying it then being about it cause I am sure if someone called my bluff, I'd just gladly give my shit over. I always try and be mindful though. I shot those in North Beach and it's nothing but tourist, some hobos, couples on dates and maybe a stripper or two. Actually tons of people around me were taking photos with their cell phones. It wasn't a threatening spot at all.

I actually just went out last night in Baltimore with three friends to photograph some neighborhoods and, at least with old film cameras, people are usually just curious. I get "Ya'll filmin' a movie?" or questions about what I'm doing a lot, but I think sometimes people don't know the value of the equipment we're using because it's not a big expensive-looking DSLR. At least in the inner city, people are genuinely interested because it's something different. I've actually had more problems with the suburbs then I've ever had with the city. I've never had an incident where someone wanted to rob me for my stuff (knock on wood), but you definitely need to be cautious. I would definitely have a buddy or two, just in case.

Shooting photos at night is the best.

And for all you LA people, seems like there are some prints on sale at the Known Gallery from the 20 Anniversary Girl show. Would be rad to get some prints from your favorite skaters and skate photographers.

^Are you just shooting jpeg and using it straight out of camera? It just looks like there's little to know post processing, and they all seem a little bit underexposed.

I did shot in RAW and did some post processing, but not a huge amount. And for the exposure, thats kind of the feel i was looking for, i dunno.

What ISO did you shoot? I am assuming a low ISO? Some of those photos could just need a bit of sharpening. I know shooting at night can be an odd thing. Sometimes just the time of night makes the difference in the photo like when the sun is about to go down or if there is no clouds in site. Sometimes those deep dark blacks are the best and if you shot that more in the evening, you'd get a whole different look.

And Acosta is the shit. Probably one of my favorite skate photographers.

Yeah, i think my average settings would be something like "ISO200 F.8 4seconds"

Must of been about i hour after the sun set.
Would you recomend a higher iso? and perhaps a later time after sunset?

It depends. I think each scenario is different. If there isn't a lot of ambient light and you don't have a remote, then you might have to jack up your iso. Even some really long exposures, I would even go up to ISO 800. If there is a lot of ambient light, then you can really set your iso low but that is if you want something in the range of 20-30 seconds. Sometimes I'll just try all settings and just check at home which looks good. I'd even preferably go when the sky is blue when the sun is practically gone but still emitting light. Gives it a lot of natural color.

I shot these yesterday and it's whatever. I came back from Twin Peaks cause it was so windy and just tried to shoot the Castro Theater but there were so many damn things going on. Had to stack 2 photos together for each of these cause there was so much motion blur from people.

I asked him earlier for a portrait with my TLR, which I haven't developed yet, but I didn't ask him for this one in particular. He was real cool about it.

I drive home on this freeway everyday and thought it might be a cool place to take some photos from so I went on a hunt on how to get to it. When I got up there, someone had cut this hole perfectly in the middle of the freeway for some timelapses or something like that. The line in the sky is an airplane descending into the SD airport.

Also, during the day i spotted a big issue seller (homeless guy) who has pretty nice laptop. Seems like they dont always spend your money on booze and drugs, sometimes they save up to look at cats online.
