Yeah, the rx100 looks very nice after some research. The second version just came out but doesn't seem to be worth extra $150 for my purposes. $600 is a decent amount of money. I've never bought a digital camera. Will it be outdated/breakdown or something equally sad in the next couple years?
And where do people buy these things?
do we share the same grey matter? i've been poking around digital options lately, too. the RX100 has tempted me since chuck d started posting his killer interior portraits awhile back. probably can't go wrong with that one, but here are some other options at a similar price point:
i've been sold on the powershot line since 2006, which is how long that one model i carried around in santa cruz has lasted. smashed lens first into the ground, dropped, stashed in sweaty skate pants pockets, and still works perfectly. there are newer models (S100, S110, etc.), but the S95 looks like the best balance between specs and cost.
i've heard nothing but good things about this camera and am dangerously close to bidding on one via ebay. large sensor, fast fixed lens (35mm equivalent), optical viewfinder, and a control system that is easy to acclimate to if you're coming from a manual film camera. apparently the latest firmware upgrade fixes a lot of the sluggishness in focusing and in the general interface.
let me know what you decide on!
