Thanks dudes!
have you had any bad/sketchy experiences while out shooting at night?
I've had a few experiences where I feel sketchy about a situation, especially in the city, but I've only had one where I was legitimately worried about my well-being. I was out with two friends shooting in the fog in the more suburban areas of Baltimore when I saw this:
I took the shot while my one buddy was changing rolls and the other was up the street, shooting another car or something. Anyway, some dude is walking down the sidewalk and walks up to the front door of the house. The owner opens the door, they chit chat for a little bit, then he lets him in. About 2 minutes pass and my other friend comes down and meets up, when the owner of the house comes out and he's like "What are ya'll doing?!" and my friend says "Oh we like to shoot old cars and stuff at night", to which he responds "BULLSHIT! WHAT ARE YOU REALLY DOING?!" My friend just repeats himself and the guy goes back inside.
Fifteen seconds later he storms out the door, holding the leash to a barking Chow Chow (which apparently is an aggressive dog breed), yelling at us that he'll "let it loose on us". Immediately, we're trying to calm him down, explaining we're just photographers and we understand that what we do looks a little weird to most people. He finally starts to chill out and explains that the rims or whatever on his car have been stolen twice and that's why he reacted explosively.
We make "peace" and bid adieu. Crisis averted.
Moral of the story is always have a buddy or two to shoot with, just to watch each others' backs.
Honestly, just know when to dip out when something doesn't look right. There have been a few times where there are some dudes just aimlessly hanging around or obviously up to no good and we just leave. In the same breath, I've encountered a lot of nice people who are generally interested in what we're doing or just give a brief "be safe", which I appreciate.
