me and my girlfriend went to helsinki for 3 days and then to oulu for 1 night for a wedding. i think it would be great for a summer-semester, the nature up there is unreal! if you stayed up there longer you would have to have a fitting mindset i guess, its not for me. a month or so would be a blast for sure though. the city itself is kinda boring, and a little weird for central european standards (no real center and so on) but worth visiting for sure!

Man......Baltimore seems like there are a lot of characters out there. Like two individuals were out there with snakes on their necks?! I am not even sure you can do that in SF without people bugging out.

Haha well it was Artscape, which is a huge arts festival here in Baltimore so all the characters come out. The two people with snakes were together, but I actually saw at least another 3 or 4 people who brought their snakes. It's actually not uncommon to see shit like that on a regular day. I've actually seen photos from friends of guys with snakes just chillin on the corner. Baltimore is a gem.

so i kind of ran into this problem yesterday where my shadow kept getting in the shot as the sun was going down. sometimes it can be cool if you do it intentionally (like the example above) but other times, it just looks like some crazy random shadow and i had to try to figure out ways to stand and aim the camera to not get my shadow to ruin my shot. do you guys have any tips, or is it just one of those things you have to figure out depending on the spot/subject/composition? the only thing i can think might help is running a longer lens.

I get ya with shadows. They can either be really cool or really annoying. It really always depends on the situation and the time of day. Occasionally, you can hide your shadow in other shadows like I did below. There was a really bright street light behind me on this one, but there was a pole that I stood in front of to hide my shadow.

A lot of the time, I don't even realize where my shadow is though. I've come to embrace my inner Lee Friedlander (or attempt to) and just include my shadow.

I feel the same way about reflections.

And some Lee Friedlander shots because... well... Lee Friedlander.

never heard of Lee Friedlander. just checked out his stuff though and his self portraits are really awesome. now watch me try to cleverly work my shadow into all my shots to be cool like him.

thanks for the advice dude. i kind of figured it was one of those things that just becomes another obstacle that you have to figure out how to work with or around, but i figured id ask.

Yeah, no problem man. I definitely get the feeling though. Often, I don't want to "break the fourth wall" and include my own presence in the photo. It's all situational, like you said. Time of day, direction, buildings/tree/etc around you, angle, whatever.

I'll be exhibiting some photos later this year and would really appreciate some opinions on which three photos are the weakest.
This is a solo show so I was hoping to show around 15-20 photos.

You'll do me a big favor by telling me which ones doesn't work. I'm paying to have these drum-scanned and my budget
is fairly limited. Comments here or PM. Whatever you prefer. I'm going to drop off the negatives on monday (while
visiting Paris).

We had a really gnarly storm come through last night. My girlfriends aunt lives in these apartments and I guess the winds were so strong that part of this carport roof got ripped off and blow over like 100 feet and took out a tree. If you look at the left of the photo you can see where it was, and obviously on the right is where it ended up. I walked around and took some photos, but most of them sucked. When I was checking out the carport that was still standing, I spotted a nest where these baby birds fell and died. I snapped a few photos because I've never seen birds this small, and even though it was kind of sad, I thought they looked pretty interesting. I had to set my camera on the ground for the second shot because I didnt have any kind of tripod.
