Snapseed lets you adjust the dynamic range on a sliding scale so you can push it slightly, without going all the way into a kitschy tone-mapped look. Or, you can pull it back a bit, which can dramatize the lighting. If you download the app, the dynamic range control is called "ambience." Maybe try playing around with that. I usually have my SonyRX100 with me, but when I don't, I am usually content with what I can get with my Galaxy s5. Generally I'll tweak the dynamic range and then bring down the saturation a bit in Snapseed, then adjust the highlight tint and overall color temperature in VSCO.
