Style is overrated.

I’m all for artful, creative skating and trick selection. I don’t think everything has to be done down a 22 stair rail to be cool.

But.

When there’s a whole long thread about « fake style, » it’s gone too far. How you look on the board is how you look. Injuries affect your flow. Your friends and your heroes affect your style. We all started doing this because we saw someone go by on a board once and thought: « that’s cool. » So we’re all style biters. All of us.

I’m fully out on hating how people look and move. It’s just gatekeeping and it’s wack.

Ok go ahead and burn me to the ground.

P.s. my three most favorite and most cringe ways of celebrating a trick are:
-go « UUUNH » like master p
-finger guns + wink
-pick up my board, hold it up in the air, run a full lap around the park/spot while screaming…then jump into the arms of the closest innocent bystander. I weigh 225. If I land a clean slappy 50/50 shove out, and you’re around, get ready…

Yeah but fake style isn’t just a skateboarding thing. Artists & musicians fake their style all the time. Regular people fake their entire lifestyle. And those flamboyant make celebrations you mentioned that involve using strangers as props sound like a character you created to be the zany guy.

To me, style is what separates the greatest talents from those who might put in more work to become recognized as a great but isn’t naturally great. No one says you have to have great style and not everyone can. And it is kinda all about just how you do something but that’s part of the whole point. If you don’t have great style, spend less time trying to pose someone else’s style and use that time to get better and develop or own style. If it matters to you that much. Some people have no style and suck but just have fun doing something and that’s all good too.

Agreed, also writing left handed feels right so we should call left handed right handed.

Jokes aside, I have a stupid but genuine question for right handed goofy footers.
As a right handed, regular footer, karate makes perfect sense. From orthodox stance, if I do a flying jump kick I spring off my right leg and kick out with my left leg.
If I try to jump off my left leg and kick out with my right leg it literally feels like I'm doing a switch stance jump kick, it's clumsier and I don't jump as high.

What does that feel like for a right handed goofy footer?
The motions of doing most flip tricks are basically a flying jump kick with a flick or scoop added.
If you were doing karate, would a jump kick feel more comfortable if you jump off your left foot and kick out with your right?
I wouldn't think so because that would require changing stances before any jump kick, so do y'all just feel equally comfortable doing jump kicks both ways?

I feel like this stuff is just random. I’m right handed, regular and would feel more comfortable doing a karate kick off my left leg with my right doing the kicking, but definitely feel more comfortable doing a kickflip than a nollie flip

Yeah, I'm a right handed goofy footer. I do everything with my right hand, my left is basically useless. Even in hoops, I'm heavily right handed, do the right handed two step, my handles with the left are near tragic. Would deffo kick with the right/jump off the left in martial arts if I did them.

Yet I push goofy and bat switch in baseball. Go figure.

Just randomness, it feels right that way. No premeditation in it whatsoever.

Right handed, goofy foot, regular batting, would stand on my left leg for most kicks, and also want my strong arm forward in a fight. I want to say it's some muscle memory strength from pushing and using my left side like that, but I'm pretty sure it's lack of learning proper technique

I mean, maybe, maybe not. If somebody took me under their wing and drilled regular stance and push into me...maybe. But why would anyone do that if I felt comfortable otherwise? My dad never skated, but when he got me my first board he told me "hop on it with your left and push with your right". I tried and looked like a disabled giraffe. Tried it reverse and instantly felt comfortable.

It would be like in the olden days, when grandparents drilled their ledt handed kids to do everything with the right, cause the left handedness was a sign from a devil or some ish.

Then again, maybe I would've ended up ambidextrous that way. Now I'm antidextrous.

Well, the question was pertaining to how the legs are used from an orthodox fighting stance compared to skating. When standing orthodox you're essentially turned regular foot with your right leg in back.
Wouldn't apply to a left handed goofy skater because they're standing goofy/southpaw across the board.

A weird one for me is I do everything in the traditional right handed way, except sliding across ice.
If I run and slide across ice I do it goofy foot and I have no idea why. I tried to do it regular foot once and ate shit almost instantly.

Right hand goofy also makes more sense for the throwdown. you can hold the board in your right hand and not do a reynolds crossover.

Shit, you're the perfect person to answer my question.

I know there's no kicking in Judo, but if you were going to do this type of jump kick...

Would it be more comfortable/powerful/graceful to do it right foot forward like your skate stance or left foot forward like your combat stance?
