that’s ai.

Is it? That would be in incredibly bad taste from Federico.

Having the second angle filmer say he was there too (great post btw) makes me think no way this is AI.

that IG post popped up on my feed and my first thought was something looked off about it but it was 11 at night so didnt think too much more into it. Seeing this post now confirms its AI. incredibly corny post from someone I already thought was a cornball. how are you gonna post some AI bullshit clip when you probably have hundreds of MJ clips on a hard drive somewhere???

Having worked as a professional video editor I don't think it is AI. I would assume that a plug-in might have been used to create the slow motion of the clip which interpolates the footage to add in extra frames to slow the footage down. This would create extra frames by approximating the movement between existing frames which can sometimes make the footage look a bit warbly or warped based on my experience of using such things in the past. It's odd that Feds turned off comments, however given that it's a tribute post I'd say it's more tactful to have no comments rather than people arguing about AI.

Totally understandable. Life is strange and terribly difficult at times, but it's also full of magic and beauty. Observing things in nature really helps to recenter me and my thoughts. Seeing some ants do their thing and imagining all the other strange functions going on hidden from view while hurling through space together. I know what we have here is rare as fuck and cherishing the strangeness of the situation we're all in allows me to enjoy just farting around and not feel guilty about always being "productive".

The thing is that I see all of the beauty that this world has to offer, and it makes my heart want to explode...

Something as simple as flora and fauna, the natural formations of the earth, the cycles of life, death and decay; the inherent beauty of nature...

But we as humans corrupt this beauty, extracting all potential value out of the singular thing that gave us life in the first place, we simply use and abuse it...

Although I will say, there is beauty in suffering, there is beauty in the connections we make we other people, there is beauty in art, there is beauty in our collective, shared experience...

Perhaps I've never been very optimistic about what the future holds for humanity, the environmental degradation, the growing inequalities in society, the rampant greed and fetishization of money; our world is sick and I take solace that one day it will reclaim what we have so carelessly taken...

For perspective, I grew up in a very ecologically centered home, my favorite music when I was like 5 was this guy Dana Lyons, who made environmentally conscious music for kids (I was lucky enough to see him at The University of Maine Oreno when I was a kid), and always felt my closet connection was to the earth itself and what it has produced...

yeah, that's probably the more likely scenario.

if @corywillfilm didn't corroborate, and if this was posted by some random fan account, then sure, who knows.

i'd certainly like to believe that one of the main filmers during Pretty Sweet wouldn't just generate a fake MJ clip to post as tribute, but i could be wrong.

I feel you. As someone that's not religious but very spiritually connected to the natural world it's an immense burden to witness humanities' impact on the planet. I live in Florida and in the last 5 years development has just exploded. So many peaceful pockets of the world have been clear cut to expand the suburban sprawl. I've accepted that there's not much that I can do apart from being involved in local politics and teaching anyone that's interested about the importance of healthy ecosystems.

A soul full of love and empathy is an immense gift but also a heavy burden.

Well, like many people here, I haven't been around these parts since forever, but I felt I had to leave this little hommage somewhere.
That was from a project I did with a classical piano player in marseille, dating back to 2013.
I figured that could join the pile on the altar. RIP Marc Johnson.

Thank you for sharing this. Absolutely beautiful.

I don’t often post anywhere but the all of the positive vibrations of this thread (excluding the negatives) inspired me to share. Marc is one of my all time favorites as well. The news of his passing broke me, similar to when I learned of Grosso’s passing.

I’m a middle school art teacher in MA and run a skateboard club. On Friday, I spent the first 20 mins talking to the kids about MJ, his contribution to skateboarding, his struggles with substance abuse and depression, and encouraging them to access their support structures if they start feeling ways that could bring them harm. The group of 4th through 8th graders were fully engaged, and respected the moments of silence we held for MJ. After watching his fully flared part, we went skating. Earlier in the day I made them stickers, later this summer I’ll screen some shirts. (See below for images. And this is not promotion - I make shirts and stickers and give them away to support what I believe in.)

MJ will be missed forever, and in some small way I’ll do what I can to ensure his legacy stays gold.

If you can share the graphic, I'd love to put this on a pin

Definitely not AI. I was literally there watching him at 8am filming him battle it, I dont know if I have the clips because I was generally using their cameras because of the quality of mine at the time. I havent talked to Feds in awhile, but I would think that he turned off comments so people didnt argue in them about the whole chocolate/lakai thing with marc more than it being possibly AI, which let me make it clear it is definitely not. Taffy is right, he filmed at 60p and used that program that turns it into 120/240 footage, so whatever you might be seeing is caused by that.

Not AI. It’s possible I have the angle but I’d have to dig out drives that I haven’t turned on in years. I’m almost positive I was using Federico’s second camera tho so he would have it. He used Twixtor to slow it down further than normal. It can create artifacts or blurring around the action because of it.

It’s not AI.   I think the best way to describe it is modern television animation doesn’t draw every single frame of a characters movements like it might have in the pen in ink days.   There are programs that can fill in the blanks  between A and B and they’ve been around for many years

Hopefully that’s a valid analogy

amazing for sure. Loved this.
was this inspired by Christophe Chassol's work? Or is it just just similar concepts?
(he's a mate from way back when, so I gotta ask )
[close]

Not at all inspired by - it came from trying to figure out how to convey the diversity of music in skate video soundtracks for an exhibition in Marseille. It took me forever to finf the right musician cause I wanted a master at his art + looking the least "skate/cool" as possible, and who knew NOTHING about skateboarding.... We did a whole thing called Skateboard Concerto with I think 25 selected parts? But anyway - merci d'avoir demandé. I don't wanna veer too off-topic here.

Walk good, Mr Johnson.

waoh 25 parts! that sounds like an amazing project. Can we see the whole thing somewhere?
Don't want to veer off-topic too much either, but anything that keeps this thread on the front page is good I think.

(et au fait je trouvais ça mortel de voir le nom d'un skater signer des articles dans Wax Poetics !   ;))

All good! Not sure if it was supposed to be ender ender or just at the end of his part. I don’t remember him saying he was trying to lock into the groove I think it just naturally happened that way. A lot of the dudes were trying multiple different “Enders”. I honestly forgot he got this close to it.

definitely not AI.

Back in 2018, I digitized and imported all of Federico’s
footage onto an 18TB drive. I booted up the drive last week to dig up those attempts because I remember seeing them back then and was amazed Marc tried that. The spot is in LA at some school, I believe Yuto skated it recently.

There is also HPX attempts that Cory filmed ^ that I will tell Feds to post. The reason why the footage looks so trippy is that Marc is slightly out of focus. Probably also how damn long that rail is. There is no editing done to the clip (other than some colour correction). It was filmed on a phantom camera, so the slow mo was filmed in camera not using an editing program. I think the only thing that is throwing people off is that he is slightly out of focus.

The sessions from the last month of filming PS were pretty interesting, lot of dudes going for it trying some crazy tricks. Theres some real close ones of Alex trying frontside half cab flip a table after they filmed the drone intro

Rest In Peace Marc Johnson ❤️

What threw me off most about it is the size. He's done some big rails but to flip 5-0 something like this at what 35 seemed unreal.

The question to those who were there is of course: did he try it off the nose after?

I was watching his Pretty Sweet part yesterday and my wife walked in and asked if he was the guy I was so bummed about passing. I told her yeah and she sat down and watched it with me and asked a few questions. She said he looked so young. I told her that video came out in 2012 but he was 49 when he passed and she replied that is still young. It really is in the grand scheme of things. MJ has been my favorite skater for 30 years and I never had one of his boards. I regret not getting one for the wall. Definitely the hardest I’ve ever been hit by a “celebrity” death in my life.

Im not sure how to embed. He was going to set up a board and try again but they got kicked out shortly after. If you look closely you can see its the same
Board he landed the frontside noseslide heelflip ender on, that same week. I believe Feds will post that land too without the ramped slowmo thats in the video

Thank you. Such a shame, he would’ve definitely landed that if the board didn’t break. But that’s just how it goes sometimes I guess.
I love Marc’s reaction though.

okay, that’s just insane. it just looked ai because of things previously mentioned, and that we have never seen marc go quite that big.. especially with a flip in… at 30 something. yuto did a nollie grind on it i think? jordan hoffart maybe a regular five 0? being how gnarly those guys are and how big of spots they skated, it just seemed insane for an older skateboarder at the end of his career who mostly skated low impact stuff to just go balls to the wall all of the sudden and one up them to that level. well, it is insane! i should’ve never doubted marc obviously, but it’s kind of like if we all of the sudden saw an unused bail of mariano skating the hollywood 16 from 15 years ago… it’s just very random and uncharacteristic. also makes it that much more legendary that we never heard/saw absolutely anything of this until after he passes away, which only furthered my disbelief. this would’ve been 2012ish? so, whatever hoffart did on it in the powell video was only a few years prior, while yuto’s nollie grind would come out over a decade later… i guess the conclusion we come to here… is that marc johnson (the primarily ledge/manual skateboarder) is the type of person to nearly one up yuto a decade prior on a fucking 16 stair at 35 years of age… there will never be another.

imagine fucking the dog shit outta chris roberts

GOAT shit. As a music teacher, this is next level. Not all soty's are in the streets.

ps. If I could snag one of those sticker designs I'd be very thankful.

Thanks so much for the love, friends! Since I introduced the students to MJ, every single one of them has stopped me at some point this week telling me about another of his parts they found on YouTube. They were really psyched on MJs skating. See the image below for some sticker evidence, including Grosso.

Some people here are requesting stickers. Happy to share. DM me your address and I’ll send some out next week.

Marc Johnson forever.
