this whole situation is pitiful, really.

most skaters dont give a shit about any thing but skateboarding. as soon as they hear anything about politics or business, they run away. when they hear anything negative about something they like, most jump back like we're attacking them and don't bother looking into details/the actual situation.

this goes beyond skateboarding and happens in all aspects of life, but like it was said... its just sad seeing it happening before your eyes.

the closest thing i have to a mall shop is called "empire" (theres only 2) and theyr responsible for closing my friend's shop. now my friend manages the "empire" thats replaced his shop. its pretty sad.

people should go to skateparks and post signs against the berrics and any mall shops, for all the kids and their parents to see. some pictures and maybe a paragraph somewhere explaining why mall shops are destroying local skateboard scenes and what not.

also talking to the kids and parents about this shit is really important. when you see a kid or whatever with a mall'ed out setup, dont just frown upon him/her, that wont change anything... talk to them about it and try to enlighten them.

whats even sadder is all the skaters supporting these mall'ed out shops. with one or two exceptions, everyone on the berrics "team" is a well based, non struggling skateboarder. if anything those guys should be supporting some small shop from where they came from, or something of the sort. i have no idea if they are generally good people or not, but god fucking damn it are most of them stupid. even if they are doing it just kus berra is their friend, thats no excuse. the struggling guys have an excuse, but the majority of them dont.

fuck the berrics and everyone on their team. fuck em. i dont give a fuck im going to resent them until things change.

Even worse, word has it that Berra and crew have been on the hunt for an east coast warehouse to set up "The Berrics East" location. Yup, just building his empire while everyone supports his schtick. And if you don't like it "fuck your face!"

There's also Metro once you get a little deeper. It sucks both shops in Oakland that have opened recently have closed, but there is plenty of choice for kids in the bay area. Worst comes to worst if you live out there and don't have a car you can take the BART to 24th street station, skate 3 blocks east on 24th, and go to mission shop. Or you can go across the bay bridge into the city and go to DLX, FTC, HUF, Cruise, mission, purple skunk, and probably even more.
There is no reason anybody in the bay should be ordering mail order.

I'm guilty of buying through mail-orders and online. I never used to shop online until the one skateshop we had here closed up. It was the best, it was what got me into skating pretty much, and kept me skating. Then after a couple of years they closed up and I had to start buying online, Ebay mainly but I've been buying shit from skatewarehouse since they've got everything and ship to Aus. There are now two poor excuses for skateshops, one is like a girls fashion surf shop that happens to sell skateboards, the only thing I've ever bought from there is griptape. Another shop opened up just this year but they're almost as worse, no one that works there skates nor knows anything about skateboarding therefore they don't get any of my business. Plus they sell scooter parts, fuck that. They stock limited shit, Fallen shoes only, and a bunch of Baker, Deathwish stuff, which beats any of the dwindle crap they sell at the other store, though. I've bought a couple of dvds from there but that's it. I can't even buy griptape there because all they have is stupid cut-out designs and coloured crap.

I guess it balances out since I buy from companies/skaters I love to support through the mailorder. But as soon as I move to a place where a skateshop exits I'll pay a little more to support them.

I'd never buy from the berrics, though. Ever.

Posting flyers and giving lectures to kids, that it's more important to support your local shops, not mall shops or The Canteen. I'm sure alot of skaters/shops would donate for this purpouse.

I see your point, but i think kids look up to local skaters more than some internet page. Atleast that's how it should be. And giving mommys lectures would help also, since they're the one's with the credit cards. I agree that my plan isn't perfect, but atleast trying it out should give somesort of results. For example, here kids look up to older guys. And since older guys skate mostly DLX stuff, then the kids also skate DLX stuff. It's simple as that. Although yes, our culture is different from yours.

I am speaking on like little kids and shit that live in just the east bay (well, Richmond area) and rely on their moms to get them stuff. Parents are lazy and even kids for that matter. This made me laugh.
Oh, and I don't disagree with talking to kids about not fucking with the berrics, but I think the most successful way to do that is to just kind of casually put them down as something that ain't cool whenever they are mentioned without saying why. For many kids, this will do it, eventually, somebody will ask, then you can sit them down and have a nice talk about what bums you out, and let them come to their own conclusion.

whats the point of flying someone from a small local shop to california? a berrics trade show pizza party isnt going to help boost sales in new jersey. these shops need to have a pizza party in their own back yard. shops might be getting a bit out of the advertisement, though probably not much, advertisement (especially on the internet) is dead (amazon quit advertising years ago, not because they were well established, but because they were wasting their money) http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2009/11/the-unclicking-84.html. even if its "GEOGRAPHICALLY TARGETED" (god fucking damn it berra pissed me off when he made such an emphasis on this). 

plus hes stealing business through his canteen from all the shops that are paying him, oops i mean, that he's "supporting" through their advertisement.

I forgot in which of seth godin's book i read this, but he spent like $400 for 200 million banners on the net and websites (yes this may sound ridiculous, but have you ever bought advertisement space on the net? probably not), and in the end his sales revenue came out to something like 300, making him lose about 100$. and BTW seth godin is a marketing guru (look him up if you dont know of him) so i think he had an idea of how to target his ads.
